This week I make it to the big city of Zagreb, Croatia. It's there where I face my biggest fear and then struggle to recover the next day. Although I feel strong and confident on the trail, I find myself experiencing difficulty with certain interactions. Watch until the end to find out if I'm able to recover and stick to my hiking plan.
In this week's video I hike from km 590 to 825. I start to climb real mountains and the views start to open up. Section B also presents the challenge of an abundance of ticks and I finally learn what they look like.
You are watching episode 10 of my Croatian Long Distance Trail Thru Hike attempt.
Much love,
Krys

Your quote "when you take away a person's choice to their bodily autonomy, you harm them" really resonated with me, and is a Huge deal. Thank you for sharing all the ups and downs of your adventure, you are crushing it!

Thank you Brandie - honestly it means so much that you pointed that out. I'm sad to know we aren't alone in this, but I'm glad to know I'm not alone. Thank you for being here on this journey with me. I hope you are well!

So proud of you Krysta. You handled everything perfectly. You kept your head in a very difficult and dangerous situation; many would not. It's inspiring to see how you turn your fears and anxieties into caution and measured action. There may be a good career for you as a motivational speaker when you return.

Thank you Paul, that means a lot! It was really helpful to have Brian there supporting me as well. I also have quite a bit of practice at this point.

One of your reels randomly appeared on my IG feed and I started following your hike on the PCT. Now I’m watching your hikes and vanlife on your KZfaq channel while I on my treadmill. The enthusiasm you show for your experiences is so motivating and found myself watching fewer and fewer soul-crushing reels on IG and more uplifting ones (Thanks to your reels IG apparently figured out the right algorithm for me!) I am grateful that you did not edit out the part of the video where you expressed your fears and frustrations relating to the catcalls and the resulting vulnerability you feel (and most -probably all- women feel). It’s good to know we aren’t alone and “just being overly sensitive”. So many men think it’s a compliment to scream and whistle at women while they walk by. (Note to men: please know it is not. At all.) I don’t think men realize we are much more afraid of them than we are the wild animals we may encounter. The way you push through your fears is truly inspiring Krysta. Is there something you would recommend carrying on a hike for protection? Is pepper spray adequate? With my luck I would be standing downwind. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your beautiful journey with us and hope you will continue to do so.

Wow thank you so much for this comment ❤️❤️! I completely agree with you! I think pepper spray is adequate. And then being able to move quick if you need to! I’ve gotten comfortable hiking at night if I have to get away from someone I don’t feel comfortable near. So glad you’re enjoying my videos. Thank you so so sooo much for watching!! 🥰

It is a huge thing. The man assaulted you. You did what you needed to protect yourself, but it is okay to see it as a huge thing. You are so brave and strong. You are amazing.

Thank you! It’s sad that I have an instinct to downplay it so that I don’t come off as “too sensitive.” Lots to unpack there. I really appreciate your words of encouragement 💜

How do you know where to follow the trail when it is so completely overgrown? Wow! I'd be lost for sure. And you handled your fear of that very scary situation perfectly. Just like when a person falls off a horse, it is important to get right back on and overcome the fear of riding. And by getting back on the trail, you helped yourself be in control again. And (after reading other's comments) you now have some words to use if that ever happens again. Also, blowing a whistle might help too...when you are able to be prepared, in which this case you couldn't have been. Take care!

Thank you so much Judy! Your words mean a lot :) I follow a GPS track on my iPhone. There is an app called Far Out and the creators of the trail upload the entire route to the app. Then I pay for the route and have access to it forever. Sometimes I'm just guessing because it's really unclear and then I have to re-find the route when the trail becomes more obvious. It really adds to the adventure. A whistle is a really good idea. I was thinking I should carry something like that when in the cities!

You never know when the end of the interaction will be, and I’m glad it ended there. And I’m glad you are speaking about it. Being alone on the trails so much, I’d feel safer if you had some physical defence skills. We can’t be naive about these things. It’s a good reminder.

Definitely agree with you on that one. I'd like to not have to need defence skills, but you're right, we can't be naive about that.

Pardon my ignorance, but are there two cities named Zagreb? I once had a friend who lived in Zagreb, Yugoslavia.

I think that prior to the war, it was Zagreb, Yugoslavia. And now it is Zagreb, Croatia. I think they are the same city.
