Here's how to connect the Shure SM7B to your camera and get Amazing Audio!
The Shure SM7B is a great mic but being an XLR mic there is no way to connect it to a consumer camera without buying some kind of special audio interface which is expensive.
If you have a normal DSLR or Mirrorless camera and you want to connect your Shure SM7B direct to the camera I'll show you the simple steps using what you already have, the result is high-quality rich audio direct to your camera that doesn't require syncing in post and is perfect for streaming live.

Hi Andrew - great video! I'm a rookie, do you think it's better to connect SM7B to Camera (Sony a6400) or connect SM7B directly to a mac have a separate audio file? I'm looking for a simple setup with not a lot of moving parts. And if you suggest conencting the mic to the laptop, what do I use to record the audio? I'm using Final Cut to edit my videos. Thank you!
@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy 6 ай бұрын
Here's how I do it, I connect my mic directly to my Mac and my camera connects to my Mac via HDMI to a converter. So technically I have a separate audio supply, but here is where I use Ecamm ( here's a link: bit.ly/3pTMBfT ) with Ecamm I can add a delay of about 5 frames so my video and audio sync perfectly. Ecamm then takes the video and the audio and blends them into one file that can be edited in any video editor. 95% of my workflow is done like this and it works really well. Before I record and it's kind of an old habit I clap my hands 3 times, this way I can double check that my audio and video are in sync by matching the coming together of my hands with the sound of the clap in my video editing program. You could of course not use Ecamm and sync the audio and video up in Final Cut Pro, but now you've got to capture the audio, import it and mess about matching the right audio up with the right video, which frankly is way to much work for me.

I love your videos. You’re so easy to follow, you get right the point, and it’s enjoyable. Thank you. I’ve done all of this - thank you! In zoom do I then select the camera as the audio (I’m using Camlink) or still Scarlett 2i2 USB? Similarly, if using ECamm would I use the ECamm virtual mic? (And in ECamm do I set up the mic as Camlink not Scarlett 2i2?)
@CourseBuildersAcademy

If you are plugging the mic into the camera you would select the Camlink as the audio source in Zoom. If I was using Ecamm however I wouldn’t connect the mic directly to the camera, I would connect it to the Focusrite and then in Ecamm add a delay of about 5 frames so it syncs with the video. To get the audio and video out of Ecamm to Zoom I would use the virtual camera and virtual mic

Is there a specific reason to use the headphone output and not the line outputs in the back of Focusrite? With the right cable you can plug in both L & R and plug the cable in the camera's mic input. Are there differences? I've used the line output method and it works just fine, but was wondering if there's any perks on using the headphone output.
@CourseBuildersAcademy

Line out is different, in short it's a lot louder, so much so that it can damage your camera, if you use line out directly into a camera or other device you need to use an attenuation cable to correct the level of the audio or connect to a device that can take a line out feed

Without seeing your setup and being able to hear what's happening it would be hard for me to tell you exactly. However, here are a few points that may help. First, make sure the mic is quite close to your mouth - about 2 to 3". Do a recording directly to your computer, does that sound OK? If it does something is likely happening in the camera - which camera do you have? The trick is to make sure the camera is not really doing any of the audio boosting, turn the input volume down in the camera and then use the Scarlet to boost the audio levels, this will give you a much cleaner signal.

@@OfficialAashishMaru I normally use my mic, which most of the time is a Rode NTG3 Shotgun mic, because I don't like the mic in the shot. I connect the mic to a Zoom H6 and I then run the H6 into my camera via a standard audio cable ( as detailed in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esCVeLWas8WwiaM.html ), I could if I liked record the audio and video separately and sync in post, but I keep forgetting to hit record on the Zoom, so I had to make my process idiot proof.

Hi Andrew, Thanks a lot for the guide and your other great videos! I have a Shure SM7B and a Sony ZV E10. If I follow your guide and use the Shure as the external mic to the ZV E10 and record videos, everything sounds as good as I expected. But if the USB cable is also plugged into the camera, there a LOT of static. Someone below mentioned that the same thing happens if the HDMI cable is in. So if this happens, is it possible to use this approach when e.g. streaming or a Zoom call? In those cases the USB or HDMI cables have to be plugged in to the camera.
@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy 7 ай бұрын
This seems to be a problem with some of the Sony cameras, I have 2 ZVE 10s and both are fine, a friend of mine has the same issue as you. There are a couple of ways to fix this without messing about with the camera and hoping different cables fix it. 1. Use a product like Ecamm ( bit.ly/3pTMBfT ) to record the audio and video, you can add an offset in Ecamm so the audio and video are in sync. You can output to Zoom from Ecamm as Ecamm also has a built-in virtual camera and mic. Ecamm also has a ton of other features, the problem is this is a Mac-only solution - this is what I use for Zoom calls and all my recordings ( including my KZfaq vids ). 2. Use an interface like a Focusrite to connect the mic to the computer via USB. But mics like the SM7B do require a lot of gain and if you're not already, you need to buy something like a Fethead or Cloudlifter to boost the signal ( the Fethead is much cheaper and does the same job ). It's not just the budget Sony cameras this happens to, some of the expensive A7s also exhibit this issue, it's really annoying for a company that is a world leader in the production of cameras.

@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thanks a lot for the detailed reply! I am trying something along the lines of what you suggested to do with Ecamm. I'm on a Windows/Linux machine so Ecamm is not an option but it looks like this is possible with OBS too. I have a Cloudlifter and Focusrite Scarlett Solo, which plugs into the computer via USB, and into which I plug the SM7b and that works great in general but the video from the ZV E10 and the audio from the SM7B are off by around 100ms. That's not a problem if I am not do something live because I can easily fix the offset in post processing, but that lag is very offputting during live meeting. That was main reason I wanted the SM7B to connect to the ZV E10 and then in e.g. Zoom, I would use the ZV E10 as both the mic and the video device. But that requires a USB or HDMI from the ZV E10 and that is causing the static.

Will this method work for cell phones? Equipment: Universal Audio MKII Quad Core Interface Cloud Lifter Shure SM7B 1/4" adapter Rode TRS to TRRS cable Cable Creation Mic/Headphone Splitter Samsung Galaxy Note 9 cellular phone *Also tried the 1/4" adapter with a gold plated Amphenol Headphone Cable* I have attempted using the method two ways and failed. Now, wondering if it works for phones or not. I will attempt the method on my Nikon Z7 ii after I figure this out.

Update: This method does in fact work for my Samsung Galaxy Note 9, iPhone 12 and iPad. The reason it did not work at first was because of a faulty 1/4" adapter. I replaced the old adapter with the one from my Audio Technica M50x headphones and it worked amazingly. I appreciate you sharing this video because it caused me to revisit my equipment and find out where I was losing signal flow. I had tried this setup back in 2019 and gave up too easily. Now, I have full access to this option.

White can cause issues with getting the lighting right, best bet is to use what I use now which is a mid-grey which would have a RAL number of RAL 7037 or a Hex #7A7B7A, I actually have a cloth stretched over the wall which I got from Amazon: www.amazon.com/Neewer-Polyester-Collapsible-Background-Photography/dp/B00UWUT61M

@@CourseBuildersAcademy thanks for your reply. Direct monitor is turned on my focusrite solo. Well, not sure whether is the left or the right. However, my problem is that when I speak in SM7B, my camera (Sony ZV-e10) registers only sound on chanel 1(CH1) and not in chanel 2 (CH2), which is not the case in your video at the 3:08 mark. You register audio in both CH1 and CH2. Sorry, if it is hard to understand, I am new to this. I needs to register audio in both CH1 and CH2 to work properly, right?

Hello Roxiie, here's what I 've found the audio with the beginner range of the Canon camera to have quite a few issues and this is likely the cause. I seem to remember a lot of the Canon cameras also don't pass audio via HDMI which is silly. For years I used Canon cameras, but silly things like this drove me to Panasonic and Sony, I really wish Canon would address things like this.

So all you need is: • Shure SM7B • Cloudlifter • Focusrite • DSLR / Mirrorless Camera Correct? Do you not need a computer to power anything? Or will it work fine with the above list of items, no computer necessary?
@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy Жыл бұрын
That's correct, if you want to save some money you can get a FetHead instead of a Cloud Lifter that will save you $100 and it's just as good. Also IMO the Rode Pro Caster XLR mic sounds almost identical to the SM7B ( I have both ), in fact, I only bought the SM7B because I have "shiny object syndrome". The benefit of connecting your mic directly to your camera is the audio and video come through together and there is no issue with syncing up later, works great if you live stream too.
@NuttyJun
@NuttyJun Жыл бұрын
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thank you for taking the time to write all that, i really appreciate it! I have one more question if that's cool - you mentioned the FetHead which i did some research on, and it seems to be this tiny thing that kind of looks like an XLR cable head? So does this mean i could theoretically have BOTH a CloudLifter and FetHead together in the same set up? Would this improve the overall quality? Or is there just no point to this? I've been waiting 2 years to return to KZfaq and i want to come back with the ultimate set up, ultimate quality, ultimate content 😂😂😂😂 so I don't mind spending a bit extra, i've had years to plan my new content, so i want to make everything as professional as possible to match all the new content i have planned 😎 Thanks again !
@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy Жыл бұрын
@@NuttyJun No, don't get the Fethead and the Cloudlifter. The Fethead does exactly what the Cloudlifter does for half the price - I have both and IMO there is zero difference. The problem with the mics like the SM7B and the Rode Pro Caster is they need a lot of power to drive them, otherwise, the audio is really low, the Cloudlifter or the Fethead give the audio a boost without introducing noise to the signal. I'd save the money and get the Fethead. Just a note, the SM7B or the Rode Pro Caster do not require Phantom Power, but the Fethead/cloudlifter do, so you need to turn on Phantom Power - don't worry, it's not passed to the mic, it's used to boost the signal.
