The same thing happened in our local school district. They made a bunch of DEI hires based on box checking rather than ability or merit and those DEI hires nearly brought down the entire school system by harassing, bullying, hacking, embezzling, mistreating students, and misusing their authority to illegally fire employees who didnt match their politics, racial background or persuasion. Lawsuits and complaints flooded the district and it took years to finally start making fixes and getting these bullies fired but not before they damaged the lives of many teachers, administrators and most importantly the students. These DEI hites cost the school district a lot of money, numerous scandals and good employees and now no one wants to work for the district. DEI is evil.

It takes time to learn how to be a good boss who respects boundaries and maintains self-control. Lots of people don't master it. When you attribute all criticism to racism, you never learn how to improve. You never become good at your job. Eventually, you wind up in this situation. I can't think of a more progressive, committed-to-the-cause field than public defenders. If she had taken constructive criticism, or even frustrated pushback seriously, she might not be in this humiliating position.
