Connecting to the Past - Hudson Bay Axe Restoration

There is something about a Hudson Bay patter axe and the iconic look of a Hudson Bay Blanket that connects and grounds me to my past. I hope you enjoy this restoration and customization of this axe. It was fun cleaning it up, electro-etching my logo and constellations, carving a handle, painting it and making a leather sheath for it. I hope you all enjoy it. How awesome. I made my own hudson's bay co. style axe head from a found plain axe and also painted the handle with the bay co. stripes. How cool to see someone else had the same idea! Your etching and masked constellations, put yours at the next level though. Really nice job.

What a coincidence. I'm watching this in Calgary after having visited the heritage park and learning about its history. I looked at old photos, perhaps one that depicted your great grandfather. On Thursday I'll be returning home to Ireland.

Yes -The Connection is a real thing. My mixed blood G Grandmother came off the Six Nations Reservation/Ontario. I have old Tools from my Grandfather who was born turn of Century in a Nevada Mining town-- but I would Never Strip the Patina off a old Tool- especially His old tools!! I wire wheel off the surface rust,Clean them up and keep em Vintage🇺🇸

Great video! I like the way the axe head turned out, with the etching. I no longer use Birchwood Casey products, after they changed their way of doing business, and moved from Minnesota to Texas. To some companies, the bottom line is more important than quality of product.

im 61 and when i was a boy my mother loved her Hudson Bay blanket coat that was wool and striped with the Hudson Bay colours - i wish i had it now even if it was too small -Cheers from Onterrible

That’s just gorgeous. Fantastic job on this one. I thought about your channel this week and why I like it so much. Some of the most influential people in my life have been people who show love through craft. My father was a carpenter who I always looked up to. He always put so much into his work and he truly loved his craft. I picked up playing the cello when I was younger and I deeply appreciated the time, work, and love that went into crafting stringed orchestral instruments. Even more than I liked playing them. Watching someone have so much patience and put so much care into each small part of crafting is something that I admire so much. I see that in your restoration videos. It’s something really special.

Love watching your videos, I'm not sure what it is but I always find them quite emotional. I don't know if it brings me back to a moment in my childhood working on projects with my dad or makes me wish my son and I shared similar interests. That is a great hatchet / sheath project! Nice work. But unless it's a wall hanger, I think you should have done the painting on the upper portion of the handle. The part that you hold should be raw wood with only the boiled linseed oil. In my opinion of course.

Absolutely love your videos and the work you do. You are an artist sir. The only thing I did not like was the spray paint on the axe handle. Wish you had used a wood burning tool and burned the constellations into the handle and then burned the rings for the colors and used a die to color the handle. But still your work and videos are always an absolute delight to watch.

again such an amazing axe, to be honest, I don't usually like this kinda restoration, but my gosh you pulled it off. This takes serious skill man. Absolutely incredible. I also love the Hudson bay patterns as well, but I can't get them cos I live in Scotland. Hopefully someday ill get one though. Again though amazing work man as always and keep it up.

very good, though i have to say your sheath snap is going to scratch the holy heck out of your nice acid etched surface every time you push it down to close it. i have a zippo sheath the same way and it ruined my filigree zippo surface. i ended up putting some duct tape on the back part of the snap so it doesnt rub metal to metal.

Do you know anything about the brand of that axe? I have found similar unmarked Hudson bay heads, round oval eye, notch pattern, and I'm having trouble identifying it. Also, if you could do some bare bones Draw Knife restoration videos, making handles without a lathe, that would be super great! Thanks!

Hi great RESTORATION u need to get some pinstriping tape then u will get sharp lines in your paint work.👍

I’ll have to try it. This was automotive masking tape that seemed to have just a little issue over the constellation vinyl stickers. In the end I was able to clean it up a bit by carefully scraping off the extra color. Thanks for watching.

It was great until you painted the handle in my opinion. A chard finish around the logo ect might would hold up better and fit the tools look a bit better. Just my 2 cents. I enjoy your videos, and thanks for what you do

The original handle in that axe is shaped properly. I despise those new factory made plump axe handles that are cut down only at the end for it to fit into the blade. And I see that a lot of people making axe handles make them that way too. WHY? Even if you make the axe handle so thick, they are just as likely to break near the blade, they feel too thick, too bulky. If you think the wood you are using is not strong enough then use some stronger wood.
