You lot got lucky. I went to a Christian school from the age of 6 until I graduated. Then on Sundays I had to go to church TWICE. I also hated it and was bored out of my mind. I slept through services just to pass the time, which I'm sure you can imagine fucks yourself up for getting up at the right time for real school on Monday. I used to pretend to sleep before the second service on Sunday and hope on that occasion my parents wouldn't be arsed to try and wake me up. I also deliberately didn't do any of my homework on some weekends until just before the second service so that I could convince my parents that I was just too swamped with work lmfao. Sunday school is shit. All they do is tell you the same 5 fucking stories, force you to do boring activities, and I often didn't even like the other kids. Also, once you grow up and can actually understand what those stories were, they're either horrific or complete bullshit, often both actually.

I have to agree with all that "nothing more discouraging than pushing religion on kids" argument. My mom never cared about religion, but my grandma was "Catholic" (as in, she claimed to be religious, yet I can count on one hand how many times she's been to church during my lifetime) and she always made me go to church on Sundays, even if I didn't care much about it. One time I wanted to stay home during Easter, she threatened me she'll stop buying me kids magazines if I don't go (she always bought me one weekly. And I don't wanna go into that, but she bribed me for many years of my childhood). So yeah, after the church confirmation I never returned to church if it wasn't a special occasion like wedding or funeral and I consider myself agnostic. Not like I hate all church-related stuff, but I find it to be more like a branch of science, I like discussing about different beliefs.

I went to a Salvation Army run school and in the school there we had "Captains" and "lieutenants" which were basically pastors but with different ranks in the Salvation Army organization. I don't know how that shit works but they were all basically there to preach during our devotion time. Anyways for those guys and the teachers, they'd get like a really big discount on school fees so needless to say most of their kids were enrolled at the school and they were the most fucked up and rebellious kids in the school who'd start fights, drink and smoke in the toilets, hell the first kid that ever brought porn to my class was one of those kids. Even the teacher's kids, since teachers are supposed to be devout Christians, they had the same effect on their kids. Its so ironic when I look back at it now. But then again it makes sense
@shuna.
@shuna. 3 жыл бұрын
Forcefully pushing and bribing is a wrong approach if you want people especially love ones to know who God is. Though I say, being religious is different from having a personal relationship with God. You can be the most religious person but don't know who God really is.

@@allenquadras9461 There’s a big difference between a cultural tradition and a personal belief. It’s hard to say whether Connor’s parents did it to instil “morals” or what. Honestly I think the actual teachings of the big G make the most rational worldview. But most people who call themselves christians don’t sincerely do their best, only what suits them. Me? Yeah I don’t wholeheartedly act on what I believe either. So why should I call myself a christian? People tend to use morals (and certain other teachings) to be pricks too, it gives things which most people would agree are actually good and sensible a bad name. Well whatever, I wish you all the best in achieving what you want. My advice is if you disagree strongly with you parents then do your best to support yourself independently and once you achieve that they don’t have any right to decide stuff for you. And yeah I’m sorta aware my point of view will be unpopular in this circle. That’s fine, just please be polite otherwise aren’t you as bad as the pricks you are deriding? And if you ask me why I bothered saying anything... I don’t know either. Lol

As someone who also went to Sunday School, back when I used to go to church a lot, I remember they had this board with stickers for something with our names next to it; and it was something for like a short quiz from either of a story, or short movie of said prophet or person in J-Man's (Jesus) stories. And I remember being so proud of myself for memorizing the characters, and the events that happened. Edit: I also had a vivid memory having the symptoms of a fever and felt sick, then throwing up on my best Sunday clothes. I'm a Christian myself and I think it's unfortunate that there's a lot of people like Connor who had a negative experience with Sunday school or with church and it's not only because I think they were forcing it upon them, but also because they perhaps didn't clarify or explain properly the doctrines of the faith, like who Jesus is and how to get saved. I would never force my beliefs on anyone, but at the same time, regardless of what your religious position is, questions like, Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going after I die? are serious and important questions not to be glossed over. When you study the New Testament, you'll realise there's far more to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus than just an entertaining story to pass time, as there have been tonnes of studies throughout the centuries that show that there was a real person called Jesus of Nazareth who lived 2,000 years ago and that the Apostles were transformed by this man's life and testimony. I know many people would probably look at my comment and think I'm talking nonsense, but if you truly consider yourself to be an open-minded person, then seriously consider the evidence for the Christian faith, because if you do, you might be really challenged by your own worldview and presuppositions and most importantly, your eternal destiny and soul matters! I REALLY depise going to church every Sunday considering that there's already 5 days of waking up very early to go to school. Not to mention, everyday, I was forced to listen to a sermon/bible reading. And my parents are so fucking dense that they couldn't figure out why we don't want to personally reading the bible, pray for 90% of the day, just talk about religious stuff or play Christian music with no regard to how loud the speakers are, when they keep shoving the religion stuff 24/7 into our faces. The only thing I appreciated during the pandemic is how we aren't forced to wake up early in Sundays, considering I have a stressful college schedule.

My father is ACTUALLY super religious and yeah, until I went to college, I was forced to go to Sunday school - and Sunday service - and Wednesday night service - every time it happened. I intentionally went to an out-of-town college JUST so I didn't have to go to church anymore. And he STILL hasn't let up, just a few days ago I got a Christmas card from him and instead of anything sentimental, it was a paragraph telling me I needed to go to church. And he wonders why I don't go to church, as if forcing it for the first 18 years of my life wouldn't make me hate it.

Our Sunday School is basically in Saturday and the only reason i hated it because of my parents specifically my mom, Thing is i really like what the teacher is discussing and i learn a lot of life lessons/advices and it was actually fun. The thing i really hated though is the homework/assignments and that part where mom is always nagging me to the point i just stop going to sunday school because of my mom because i just wanted to go to the sunday school to hear the teacher's discussion and just learn without doing any homework/assignments and apparently it just impossible and the pressure of keeping up with your churchmates when it comes to the assignments,when my teacher ask me if i done my assignments,multitasking with school, and of course from your parents. Mind you i did do my homework/assignments but i wasnt to answer all of them and sometimes you cant just even answer them because the question hard is For those any parents who wants their child to go to the church make sure it's genuine and not you want them to be just to be "good" because church is more than that and of course make sure to not put many pressure of them and at least try to help them and im pretty sure they will appreciate it.

Went to a catholic school because like 90% of schools in Ireland are as such. Which lead to regular prayering and bible time. By the time I was starting secondary school I was certain that "nah this isn't for me bro" but my parents pushed me to keep going to mass on sunday until I was 16 even though I am convinced low-key the only reason they go every week is not wanting to deal with the hassle that would come from my very religious grandfather (who is kind enough to not tell me he's disappointed in me to my face but I can't help but think he is definitely thinking it sometimes)

I went what was basically a Church of England school and it wasn’t till I moved schools that I realised just how religious the school was like we would have to go to church every month or so and on every second Friday we would a service assembly instead of the usual daily assembly. Then when I moved to a different school and the only thing that happened was hymns and a nativity during the Christmas concert it was really weird especially since my old school had put on both Easter and Christmas plays each year - I played Mary when my year did it.

The same applied to going to church, it was boring and a waste of time but I had to do it because my parents told me to. I always found it to be a waste of time, and even when I ditched all of that back when I was 12, for a couple more years I still had to go there until I told my parents I didn't believe and I wasn't going to go church anymore. Thinking back it was so much wasted time.

I can understand not liking Sunday School because I always felt the same way everytime I had to go to church on Sunday. I felt like I didn’t want to be there and hear all this religious conversation and as a kid, it felt dreadful because it felt like I had to force myself to go in order to get through it. But, I think as an adult, now that I think about religious and existential thoughts I feel like what is said relates a lot more to me now than as a kid. And in the current pandemic now, I feel so much more comfortable watching a livestream of my local church streaming a Sunday mass because I’m in the comfort of my home and it is much more enjoyable to me. I feel like the setting really matters to me because I don’t feel forced to leave my home but I can watch it and be comfortable.

@Kathulu glad that you have been keeping your faith amidst these difficult covid times and that things have becomes more relatable :) But just some thoughts as a fellow Catholic - not sure how much hassle it was when you could go for mass physically - I live in Singapore (so travelling and convenience in general will definitely not be as bad) but 2 things I guess :o 1. With the physical church being filled with sacramentals i feel it really makes a difference, like it really allows one to be present to God or to feel God's presence in a sense 2. And definitely much more important, Holy Communion, physically receiving the Eucharistic. As ridiculous as it might sound to others, we are really receiving the physical Body of Christ into our lives through the Eucharist. If we only knew how valuable this gift is, we would go for mass to receive the eucharist every day That being said, stay safe during these covid times!
