It’s amazing to see the psychological differences between McGregor and Poirier in their first fight, versus in their rematch in January. All of the criticism about Poirier were gone this time, and McGregor’s behaviour seemed very unusual, since he was actually being polite. It would be interesting to see a psychological breakdown of why that is and what that meant.

It seems as if Conor wasn’t the same man since khabib broke him. Also porier has learned from his mistakes coupled with a broken Conor, it was a high chance Conor wasn’t going to win in the rematch.

You know, making people mad like that makes them fight different. They come out like a warhorse instead of a calm human being. So they start to make mistakes and throw stupid punches. Opening themselves to Conor being calm and countering their emotions.

Describing this as though Conor is some kind of mastermind that mentally destroys his opponents. The reality is he's an immature kid and ppl finally are seeing through his baby games and are craving a return of respect to the sport from ppl like Khabib and GSP. Ppl are over Conor's 3rd grade bad kid in class routine

you should do nate diaz and mcgregor 1 for their press conference. the mental warfare there was particularly amazing. on both sides most verbal attacks were thwarted. however a few got through for both men. differentiating between trash talk that landed and the ones that missed is very intriguing. also, nate diaz had an extremely basic/effective method of rendering almost all of conor's mental assaults worthless. conor on the other hand appeared to not have the same level of defense as nate in regards to mental warfare. i came away thinking conor is a glass cannon in regards to trash talk.

I've been saying these exact things everywhere and he repeated the exact same mistakes in the build up to this fight. It's funny when he's vitriolic and emotionally invested himself he's not in the moment .. he's not in a flow state with his opponents frontal lobe comprised.. he's doing that exact thing to himself .. and he tried to force things in both fights

Another important quality which is sometimes overlooked is: genuine comedic value. Conor's trash talk works because the audience truly finds it funny. Which means it has to be accurate. When Conor points out Dustin's "pea shaped head" or "hillbilly" background, or how Eddie Alvarez is unattractive, or that Nate Diaz is "dumb", the audience laughs because it's something that they themselves noticed in some way, and otherwise agree with, even if they think it's a bit exaggerated (in fact, it's the exaggeration which makes it funny). And of course, because Conor's delivery is good. So it's not as easy as just jumping up and saying: "Oh you're dumb haha!" (which many of Conor's opponents tried to do and failed miserably because the audience just didn't find it funny), because there's no real comedic value in that. For something to have comedic value, it has to be insightful and interesting and true in some way - and most importantly surprising. As in, it can't be obvious or predictable. So if someone has said it before, it's not as funny the second time. There are exceptions of course, and you can hint at the same underlying flaw, but it has to be in a new and original way. It has to be genuine and fit your personality as well. Which is what makes it difficult to do.

i dont think Conor lost coz of emotions. he actually fared better than most. and he did get into Khabibs head. Khabib flipping out after fight cost him a million bucks and was the biggest mma scandal. i remember the buildup. it was the darkest and the most intense buildup ive ever seen and all coz Conor made it so. coz the stakes were that high. Conor knew how good Khabib was and Khabib also zeroed on Conor and did some tactical provocative moves like assaulting Artem Lobov in the hotel. bith sides were heavily emptionally invested. Khabib was fighting very emotionally and Conor as well.

I think it went wrong with Khabib bc 1. He's Khabib, and he's a beast and 2. Conor hadn't fought UFC in 2 years, and decided the first fight back would be against the closest thing to wrestling a bear you can be with still being a human.

He went wrong because Khabib can't speak English to the mass the way everyone else could so it doesn't make him look stupid to be silent. On top of that he's a world class fighter that has little to no flaws in his fighting.

This is one of the worst takes I've ever seen in my life. "Breaking eye contact in a tense situation is a tell-tale sign of submission and heightened anxiety." This is fucking drivel man. To me it's a tell-tale sign that Conor's opponents know exactly what he's gonna do, which is act immature, and they chuckle to themselves when they see it coming, and they give it 0 mental energy. For you to imply that someone needs to play his game exactly as he would want them to otherwise they're submitting to him is one of the most ridiculous takes I've ever heard in my life. Ppl who don't feed it, break eye contact, ignore it; these aren't the rattled ones, these are ppl that are reasonable and are playing it exactly as they need to by not giving it 1 ounce of mental energy. Horrible take man

It’s obvious Khabib was in Conors head (unintentionally) and maybe it affected Conors performance too but I’m not sure taking emotions out of both fighters Conor could have beaten Khabib skill for skill.
