Conor Oberst is back with a new solo record "Upside Down Mountain", but at Haldern Pop Festival he performed a very special version of the old Bright Eyes song "Lua" with his friends First Aid Kit and Taylor from Dawes. In 2008, he's been named the best songwriter of the year by Rolling Stone Magazine. He also helped building a huge folk music scene in his hometown Omaha, Nebraska and has been a favourite of us for a long time.
#conoroberst #lua #brighteyes
In August of 2014, we've been in the lovely little town Haldern that hosts a festival since 1984. We recorded a festival special. Make sure to check all the other bands out.

__________________________________
Cardinal Sessions was founded in the summer of 2010. They challenge the classic music video and try to replace impersonal footage with immediate and emotional snapshots.
Bands from all over the world with their different genres present their songs reduced to the essence of the musical spectrum - only vocals and unplugged instruments. Due to the spontaneous live-aspect and the approach to record every song without any additional rehearsal, songs emerge that often sound significantly different to their album versions.
We film on locations that the musicians mostly choose by themselves: remote places, frequented streets, parks, woods, fields, bars; nothing is impossible. We have accomplished our goal if the location fits well to the background of the music we and the artists want to present. But our most important purpose is that there are no borders: we film everything that we like, no matter how popular, famous or also unknown a band might be. It is still important for us to support local talents and it will always stay part of our concept.
The Cardinal Sessions team can also be booked: for example to film short documentaries of album recordings, studio recordings or live concert moments that you want to capture.
Send an email to info[at]cardinalsessions.com.

I really appreciate what the Taylor from Dawes playing lead added to the song. A slack, kinda jazzy kinda gypsy vibe. So neat to hear. Truly love that he didn't just go for something expected. Combine that with the beautiful and haunting harmonies from First Aid Kit and boom, this was not just another performance of Lua, but a completely unique version. Awesome.

I've honestly never had a song that wasn't at a funeral make me feel this... feely. I mean, damn. I'm glad I discovered this easier-style music. All that heavy shit is great, and I don't love it any less than before I discovered Bright Eyes and others, but having a contrast is really important to me right now. It's Slipknot and such for the battles and Bright Eyes and such to heal my wounds in the aftermath I guess. I wouldn't have it any other way.

This actually is a master class lesson in how to collaborate with other artists. Nobody detracts too much attention away from the song but this is RADICALLY different from the studio version. First Aid Kit is like an homage to Maria Taylor and Jenny Lewis from the previous albums, and coming off of upside down mountain the lead guitar brings me back to the sound of that album while blending seamlessly

I liked this song so much so I translated the lyrics in romanian (and it rhymes in romanian, too). I would like very much to add captions to this video, but I don't know how to do it so I ask the administrator of this channel to do it (of course, after he will consult a romanian friend to make sure is OK how I translated it).

In 2005 I came home late at night, switched the TV on, MTV was on, and I saw a young guy sitting on the curb playing guitar and singing so purely and vulnerably. Caught me immediately. Now, more than 16 years later, Bright Eyes and Conor still are favorites of mine and I still love listening and singing to their songs. And I love First Aid Kit so much, too. Wow. This takes me back. I remember being 18 and seeing Bright Eyes at a small club in Nashville. Things between my highschool "soul mate" and I had just ended dramatically and I knew he would be there too. I smoked a lot of pot before going in. I stood at one end of the stage with my sister and best friend and he stood at the other end with one of his friends. It was a personal, intense show. Back when Conor was still mumbling and staring at the floor. Playing drawn out improvisations. The melancholic music and poetic lyrics which my lost love and I used to spend hours listening to together swirled around us, amplifying the tension between us. I'd catch glimpses of his long blond hair out of the corner of my eye even though I tried not to look his way. At the end of the show he walked over to me and silently placed a stack of folded papers in my hand and then walked away. It was a short story he'd written. This was 18 years ago.

@@light_and_sound They weren’t “drawn out improvisations.” Rather, they were very practiced and developed. The first time I saw Conor was in 2000 in the basement of Sokol Hall here in Omaha, though I had friends who were in bands at the time, and they started seeing him around 1993 and 1994, and they say his stuff was Never improvised, and that’s when Conor was 13 or 14. Conor was known, even way back in ‘93, as someone who never improvised. By the time he went on stage, the songs were well-worn and well-practiced, especially 10 years after 1993, when you saw him.

In all honesty who is talking in the background? Are the singers bothering them? Did they happen to be talking by a creek and were interrupted by First Aid kit, Dawes and Oberst?

Did First Aid Kit, Dawes and Oberst have to interrupt their intimate conversation at the creek for the sake of entertainment?

Most people are inconsiderate, oblivious, and just plain asleep... Their whole lives. They live a waking dream. This background chatter during an iconic performance is unsurprising and a testament to my pessimism of the general population. Or it was intentionally recorded, which is very Conor Oberst -esque

With as much as Conor has been collabing with Dawes and First Aid Kit (particularly using for background vocals on so much of Upside Down Mountain in terms of FAK, and them featuring him on The Lions Roar) -- I could really really see them all putting together like a 5-song EP or something of brand new tracks. ....kinda like Conor and Dawes did for Record Store Day, but adding FAK into the mix, they should go for an EP. I would pay big money even for just that!!

@@zachzaslavsky1139 Yes! They released a double sided record on RSD awhile back. Million Dollar Bill is everything and Dawes did Easy/Lucky/Free. They did a Tiny Desk Concert together, play in live shows and late night performances together, the All Your Favorite Bands video, and probably some other track collabs I'm forgetting bc time is an illusion lol
