Conquer The Kentmere Horseshoe: Bag 8 Wainwrights in The Lake District on an Epic Hike In The Fells

We start this walk at St.Cuthbert’s church in the village of Kentmere. Heading off down the road we soon turn up Garburn Pass. This long and winding pass takes us on a gentle ascent and steady path until we turn off to reach our first Wainwright, Yoke. This is steady incline which becomes sharper before we reach the crest.
From Yoke we soon reach the double cairns of Ill Bell only a short walk away. Continuing the journey to Froswick we carry on along the ridge before a steeper down and up and a slight detour to Thornthwaite Crag. After collecting 4 Wainwrights on the left side of the valley, we travel over to the opposite ridge rejoining the Kentmere horseshoe.
Mardale Ill Bell is our 5th Wainwright and from here we take a last steep descent and climb of the day to Harter Fell with its messy cairn of twisted metal.
The rest of the walk is relatively gently and grassy over to Kentmere Pike and an easy path carries on to our 8th and final Wainwright of the day, Shipman Knotts.
This is one of the lake districts longer horseshoes but doable in a day and a great trek out and a must do walk for those bagging Wainwrights.

I did that 2 year's ago but parked near church think near Troutbeck. I only did half of it and cut back down over Troutbeck Tonge .Weather started to change but it's one that's stuck in my mind fabulous horseshoe which I will complete. Brilliant video again thank-you again really enjoying them xx

Hi Louise, The horseshoes are tricky if you get stuck in bad weather because you are exposed on the top all the time so you did the right thing. I hope you get to go back soon and complete it. I had a great day for it and it was a great walk out. Thanks for your support 🙏 it keeps me going ⛰️🥾😁

Hi Tony, another great video. As mentioned before I’m travelling from Belfast doing the Wainwrights, so this walk is definitely value for money! Having all the information beforehand makes it easier. Thanks again.

Hi David, thanks mate. This is a ‘must do’ for bagging wainwrights⛰️. You can add in High Street with little effort but I’ll be covering it in another walk. Enjoy it when you got over mate, it’s a great walk 🥾☀️⛰️

Great video. I've done that walk 3 times, done it both ways. The last time was your way round. The last time me and Angie couldn't stand up at Frostwick as the wind came straight up the valley and up the side of Frostwick. She tried to stand up, the wind pushed her off her feet and she rolled onto the path. Fun times. Also what a waste of time Shipman Knotts is!

Hi Tony, brilliant mate. There are some amazing fells and views on the Kentmere Horseshoe. I've done them all, but never actually done the Official Horseshoe as one walk....if that makes sense! Haha It is pretty easy walking though once up on the ridge. Its nowhere near as tough as the Fairfield Horseshoe I don't think. All the best mate Dave

Great video as always, Tony. Yes, we've done it, in good conditions like yours, same way, though we did add on High Street. We also encountered an added near Shipman Knotts! The only bit of the route that wasn't great was the long walk back to the church. I think we tried to take a straight route through bracken and should have found the more traditional route. Not sure if this horseshoe is better than fairfield but we hope to do the Coledale one in September on our next visit. Which is the best? Regards, Ashley

Hi Ashley, Thanks mate, it’s a great one on a nice day. Yes, the walk back on the road is a bit of a shame. I’ve been over the bracken bit you mention before but it was a total bogfest so I left it out. Fairfield is much more like Kentmere but better in my view as no road and there are several options to start. I prefer to start at Rydal Hall. Coledale is longer and more testing so if you have more time and energy it is a great walk out. I definitely do Fairfield more often. Let me know how you get on. 🥾⛰️😁

We might need to split the Coledale Horseshoe into 2 perhaps?!!
