It's a shame that the studio/producers didn't keep this much more violent and bleak ENDING in the movie. They Already knew it was going to get a PG Rating (a first for the POTA movies). What a Great Performance from Roddy McDowall!! VERY Underrated Actor.If you want to see another Fantastic Performance that Everybody thought he SHOULD have been Nominated for but wasn't because of Studio Politics(?!?!) then watch CLEOPATRA (1963). The man was robbed of a Best Supporting Actor Nomination that's for sure!!❤️💯 R.I.P. Roddy McDowall (1928-1998).

Not unusual. In that era there were films that had G ratings that are basically banned today that were celebrated. For example, in 1968 there was a film called Robby that had a G rating. It was a story of a boy who gets shipwrecked on an island and survives there with help of another native boy before both get rescued. It was a lesson in racial respect, tolerance and freedom. The film is now banned inside this country because the boys go swimming nude in many scenes. Back then that was still G rating. I recall seeing it in a theatre as a kid and thought nothing of it but today the film is banned.
@peterp2153
@peterp2153 3 жыл бұрын
Different era, different philosophy on ratings, since ratings boards are always subjective and based on “community standards” which evolve over time. An otherwise unobjectionable film with some “movie violence” (fake blood, nothing graphic) could get a G. It was also the era before G became associated only with animated films intended for small children.

Out of the “Apes” sequels, this one was my favorite. Very intense for its time, wasn’t afraid to be dark, McDowall’s outstanding and underrated performance as Caesar, and this “Apes” film in particular really felt like it had something to say. It has subliminal messages that criticize racism, police brutality, animal cruelty, and humans being drunk on power and control. These messages are very important for people to acknowledge and I feel planting them in entertainment like this is a very smart tactic to get a point across and to get people to listen. In my opinion, I felt like Caesar’s character was inspired by Malcolm X, which makes him even more of a bad ass! It’s definitely the most political out of the “Planet of the Apes” films and uses the most symbolism when you really pay attention to it. This one is definitely unique even to this day and has always stood out to me.

I once read an interview with Richard Zanuck, the producer of the first film. He said his decision to get Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter was based on the fact that they could be depended upon to convey everything with their eyes because the Prosthetics made normal expression limited and they would have to relearn how to create realistic facial expressions. This scene drives home what he was talking about. You simply cannot take your eyes off Roddy McDowalls eyes in this scene, his eyes are saying it all. He had by this time long mastered how to use the prosthetics for Expressions also. I think Kim Hunters Shining Moment of acting through her eyes was the close up of Ziras face in the first film when Taylor first speaks.

The novelization included this ending which depicted not only Breck's death but an orgy of killing. The books also included scenes originally intended for filming but were later dropped due to budget concerns. One scene that was to have "set up" the film concerned a gorilla who was trying to escape the city but was shot down by police in a very graphically depicted scene. It was dropped because Fox didn't want the film's tone to be established too much too soon.

Indeed. I like this ending better, it makes the most sense considering how the entire film has been building to this. The other one just stands out like a sore thumb. It wouldn't be so weird if they at least chose to reshoot new scenes showing Caesar's character experiencing this moral struggle. If the film was presenting this build up to a message of morality and breaking the cycle of hate.. it wouldn't seem so out of place. That's my opinion anyway.

I feel like both endings work, its just how poorly paced the theatrical version is. The tone shifts quite weirdly. It goes from Caesar's passionate and hateful speech to one about peace and how the apes could be better than the humans by trying to be more gentle and respectful superiors. Lisa (Caesar's girlfriend) could've been given more lines to try and slowly calm Caesar down and make him realise he's just gonna continue an ongoing cycle of hate.

This movie's entire point was showing how corrupted and evil anyone can get when they justify their outbursts with the cruel actions others display onto them. Caesar is portrayed as the sympathetic protagonist who becomes the villain himself when he just continues the cycle of hatred. Mr MacDonald was the true good guy by the end of the movie. Sure he lived in this society but he wanted change as well and related to Caesar's turmoil. But he found himself powerless to the fates of the universe as history repeated itself. If one truly wants change for the better, you must start with yourself and spread your goodwill and morals to those close to you.
