I agree, I have been through several trailers over the years. It's best to just bite the bullet and get the trailer you need/want and do as little compromising as possible. Buy once, cry once and be done as they say. Now part of my issue over the years has been having a trailer that fits my changing needs, smaller tractors and then larger tractors, size was one thing, but weight forced me into a tandem axle. And now I'm in a single axle, but with a 6K lbs axle, that is two feet shorter than the last one. 16' versus 18', but it's a little easier to manuever and drive and I also now have smaller equipment. I imagine you have done the same over the years as you have different needs. Also nice to seeing you back from all your projects.

You make a lot of great points here! I was recently forced (OK, forced myself) to upgrade to a gooseneck, despite having bought my PJ extra-wide buggy trailer 3 years ago and thinking I would be keeping it for the long run. I opted for a 20' + 5' gooseneck as it gave me plenty of length to haul two farm tractors, but was still "short" and maneuverable enough to park in my yard, and light enough for my old 7.3 to pull without trouble. I actually bought a cheap 20' + 3" skid steer-rated gooseneck at first, but after realizing how many features it lacked (dual jacks, toolboxes etc) I decided it wasn't worth the time or cost to have a welding shop add them. I'm glad I decided to sell it outright, as I ended up with a great deal on a lightly-used PJ 20' + 5' with all the options I wanted. I think the 20 + 5 is the perfect match for my truck, as I don't really see the need to haul more than 2 farm tractors (or anything that would require more than 25'). If I end up needing to haul more than 2 in the future, instead of buying a bigger pickup and gooseneck it will likely be cheaper to buy a used Peterbilt and step-deck trailer (which is the long-term goal - have both a "small" and a "big" deckover). I may end up getting a cheap 10,000-lb equipment trailer down the road for hauling garden tractors or a smaller farm tractor, but the 20' + 5' PJ is perfect for what I do right now. Definitely should have spent the extra dime on a gooseneck instead of ordering the buggy hauler 3 years ago and thinking it would be "enough".

Perk for you is you have a CDL! 😁 One thing I have decided is there is no “perfect trailer” they all have drawbacks. It’s which drawbacks can you live with!

I'm looking for a 18ish foot aluminum car hauler...would you want your only trailer to be a (full) tilt trailer? It seems like it would be hard to put 2 small vehicles on.

Aluminum vs steel is a big debate that is about personal choice (at least in my opinion). Full tilt vs split tilt is a great point I didn’t discuss. Loading two of anything on a tilt deck is a challenge, unless you can lock the deck up and then strap one item down and then load the second. However you might not have the right weight balance to get the trailer to tilt down if you don’t have a power tilt trailer. In my case a split is more effective because I can side load pallets up front and use the tilt in the rear. Chances are I will get a set of aluminum foldable ramps for the back in case I need to load multiple garden tractors etc.

@@michaelgoergen6702 you are 100% correct that I am lucky to these three trailers and a place to put them! Sorry no, I quit taking phone calls a few years ago. I was spending hrs on the phone each week trying to help folks. Reply to this comment and I can give it a good college try this evening. I also recommend folks join Mytractorforum.com. Lots of knowledgeable folks there to help out.

I'm just curios why you didn't buy all the same brand trailer? Was it a supply chain issue or just trying out different brands?

Great question, I could probably do a video on brands alone. The short version is: 1) For my gooseneck I wanted a trailer with a more options and a quality reputation. Diamond C is what I would call a premium brand trailer. It mostly plays the part. I’ve been very impressed with it to date. 2) The PJ was because I needed a dump trailer within a month and it fit the budget and time frame. Would I buy it again, the jury is still out. 3) The Sure Trac is another “premium” brand but costs a little less than the comparable Diamond C. Plus the closest Diamond C dealer is over 2 hrs away. The travel time to the dealer and shopping ease for a trailer that I will probably replace every 4-6 years made a little more sense. Would I like to have all Diamond C units? Absolutely, but for the use I need, I don’t think the extra cost is warranted.

@@mmrbeef That make sense. Thanks for the response. I've been thinking about Diamond C gooseneck but haven't pulled the trigger yet because I only use it couple time a year so not sure if it's worth having.
DO I NEED A CDL FOR MY TRAILER!? Buying an equipment trailer-some things to consider.
