In the comics it's even better-John knows he's dying of lung cancer, so he makes a deal with each of the three Dukes of Hell that when he dies they get his soul. So when he dies, they go to collect and realize they all have a rightful claim to his soul. None of them can give up their right or they'll be seen as weak and deposed, but if they go to war over it it will destroy Hell, so their only option is to cure Constantines cancer and return him to life.

The white suit is in reference to Satan's original station as an angel, which was the Morning Star or Light Bringer. The goop on his feet I'm not 100% sure on but I always took it as a reference and contrast to Jesus and the story of having his feet washed. And also a representation of him being "Most Unclean", as Gabriel calls him. I abandoned my faith a long time ago but as a kid CCD taught me that Catholic dogma is pretty fucking metal. 19:38 Nice, George. 😄

The scene at Chas' gravesite was simple closure. He died a good man and went to Haven. And when Constantine went to visit his gravesite, he came down as a "Hello" to John. Then he simply flew off. If you want to did much deeper than that, you could always look at it as him being John's new guardian angel.

Depends on your flavor of Christianity. In the "real" Bible, Angels are Angels, humans are humans. Neither one ever gets promoted or demoted to the other. They stay separate. Gabriel is special because he was already a half-breed, which allowed God to remove his divine protection, hence the wings being able to be burned away leaving only their. human side. This is why people go hard saying Chaz must have been a half-breed or full angel in disguise.

I also don't think the movie would have been successful with general audiences if they had made Constantine as much of an asshole as he is in the comics, so it was overall probably a wise move on the part of the studio to treat it this way even at the cost of alienating some of the die-hard fans.

Assuming it is a Roman Catholic church (which I believe in the movie she is RC) the Seal of the Confessional is sacrosanct. The priest should/will encourage you to turn yourself in, can make it a part of the penance (so if you want the forgiveness involved in the sacrament you must do the penance) but the priest hearing confession cannot tell anyone anything discussed therein. IIRC this has been tested in US courts and a priest cannot be compelled to testify about anything covered by the Seal of the Confessional.

Criminally underrated movie. It took a relatively unknown IP and made a very engaging movie out of it. It left those who watched it BEGGING for more info on this world, but sadly so few people actually saw this that it faded into the background and never got the opportunity to delve deeper. This movie made me fall in love with Tilda Swinton as an actor. Such a powerful performance and so ambiguous in every way. This movie introduced her to me, and I have loved every role I've seen her in since.

You didn't say anything about him, unless I missed it, so I'm wondering if you recognized Peter Stormare from Fargo as Lucifer. Also, yes, that was Michelle Monaghan in the one scene. I'm pretty sure she was in at least one other scene that was cut out, but her big break in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (which is a great movie you should watch) came closer to the end of 2005 whereas this movie opened in February. As others have mentioned, it was only announced within the past few months that they are developing a sequel to Constantine with Reeves returning. When the movie came out in 2005 it was widely criticized by comics fans who did not like the casting of dark-haired, Canadian Reeves as Constantine, as the character was a blonde Brit in the comic books (a version later realized by Matt Ryan in the DC TV universe that includes "The Flash"), but I think in the intervening 18 years, people have let that go and been able to enjoy the movie for what it is, which is a fun supernatural horror-action movie. Moore truly does not like *any* adaptations of his work. He may not even watch them because he simply hates them in principle. So there's no need to wonder, no matter how enjoyable it is, what he thought -- he hates it. In fact, when his work is adapted, there is a pre-emptive rule that he is never to be credited by name, because he wants nothing to do with any of them. In the Watchmen credits, for example, it only credits the artist, Dave Gibbons. I definitely think that the idea is that Chas becomes an angel thanks to his heroism in helping John stop Mammon from entering our world. Also, I believe the bathtub scene *does* take place in John's apartment. John actually lives right above said bowling alley, as seen in the exterior shots of his apartment with the "BOWL BOWL BOWL" sign on it, so presumably Angela leads him out of the apartment and downstairs where she discovers the coin.

Confession rules: I have some social work training... they go over this quite a lot before they send you out into the profession.... It's a thing called "duty to report", they are legally required to inform the police if the confessor says they will commit a future crime. They are not usually legally bound for disclosure of past crimes (they consider this necessary to redeem the individual) . The courts have regularly, legally compelled priests and counsellors to break the seal of confession or confidentiality in serious crimes. It's not like crime shows in that regard but they usually have to get a specific court order to compel this. Priests universally counsel individuals to turn themselves in, principally because someone else might be in jail for something they themselves did.
@MrDportjoe
@MrDportjoe Жыл бұрын
That (the court order piece) is relatively recent history AND under canon law (that of the Catholic church which binds priests) they can NOT reveal what they hear as it is viewed as a conversation with God. Some (but no all) states do have laws which seek to compel clergy to testify (mostly in response to child sexual abuse issues). However most of the time a priest will take the hit for contempt of court if they run into that sort of thing. All 50 states AND federal statue treat conversation in way very similar to patient or attorney client.

This isn't an original take but the film was before its time--or at least came out at the wrong time. I think were it to hit in the last few years there would have been more of an appetite for this different toned comic-book like movie. I absolutely love the ending with Lucifer's stealing his bid at Heaven by healing him. Also the casting was fantastic. You have journeyman Djimon Hounsou once again with this interesting lore character out of nowhere, Weisz and Keanu obviously top notch, Stormare playing a wonderfully different Lucifer with the white suit while being still super creepy, and the inspired other-worldly Tilda Swinton as Gabriel. Heck even Gavin Rossdale did well trying out acting. EDIT: Side note: I only found your channel in the past few days and I have consumed a mad number of vids at this point! Keep up the great picks!

There is no clear consensus on Chas, but he was very, very likely as you saw; a human who was Constantine's fan/apprentice. The archangel Gabriel was god's emissary/intermediary on earth. But as you saw in the film, "looks like someone doesn't have (Gabriel's) back anymore". I think that is why Chas was dressed the same as Gabriel, since the position was open, the recently departed Chaz was chosen to fill the role. In the comics, Chaz was a bodyguard and driver only (his only qualities being strength and survival skills), so this switch is movie only.

Alan Moore created the character for The Swamp Thing comics, but Jamie Delano was the writer for the spin-off comics at first, but others followed. The original Constantine is a blonde British magician / occult detective of sorts in very political stories, so I can imagine that some hardcore fans of the comics were quite disappointed by this take on it. It's a lot of fun, though, when I look past the Catholicism. My fave moment in the movie was at 19:00 or thereabouts which feels like Keanu wasn't following a script. Another fun thing that I like is that this is the only instance that I know of where scenes in Mexico are shot with natural colors but the scene that immediately follows in the US has a pretty heavy color scheme. I said this on IG, too, but Michelle Monaghan portrayed a succubus that had a fling with John, but they cut almost all of her scenes to emphasize his loneliness.

1. For those who don't know, this is loosely based on the graphic novel. Constantine is a blond British man who now is involved in the DC comics, but before he headlined Hellblazer comics, an offshoot from DC. 2. Michelle Monaghan played a succubus, who sleeps with Constantine occasionally, and it was a side character role. Her role got slashed in the editing process, but the unrated cut has her part in it. If you are curious, type the info in the search bar above. 3. There are rumors about Constantine 2, but with Hollywood being them, I have no hopes. Keanu did a wonderful job on portraying the American version. Alan Moore himself said that in some other universe there might be a version of his character who is a chain smoking brunette tired of chasing demons

Constantine is one of those incredibly rare movie adaptation when they change A LOT of stuff from the source material but still manage to create something awesome in the end, different for sure, but still awesome. Beside the physical and national difference between comic book Constantine (which is supposed to look like a young version of Sting) and movie Constantine, the graphic novel featured pantheon of divinities and entities taken from pretty much all religions at the same time, not just christianity, in the movie they most likely narrow it down both for time and for clarity. A few years ago they cast Matt Ryan in the tv show Constantine and it was awesome and in many ways a lot closer to the source material, unfortunately it wasn't renewed but later theCW introduced that version of the character in its own superhero shows. The problem with that is that while Constantine, just like Sandman, is technically part of the DC Universe, he is most often than not a side character (even if it can be a very important side character on occasion) and most importantly the way he is portrayed in the CW shows is like the sorcerer he is; the issue there is that while Constantine is known to be one of the most powerful sorcerer and mysthic of the DC Universe, in his own graphic novel he quite rarely goes around casting spells and whatnot, his two most important "powers" are his cunning and synchronicity, he is the right man at the right time but not just by chance, it's actually part of his powers (they refer to it as Synchronicity Wave Travelling, a power that runs in some member of his family known as the "Laughing Magician"), but again cunning his still the most important skill and weapon he has. This movie actually made a pretty good job at portraying that with the final trick he played on the devil, something definetely not easy to do within the time constraint of a film.
