Consti-tuition - Episode 10: Reservation

In this episode of Consti-tuition, Meghnad makes a case in favour of reservations.
Point to note: Reservations are not an employment guarantee scheme, it's a way to achieve social justice. Justice for who, you ask? It's about social justice for those who have been marginalised and oppressed for thousands of years and over generations.
The current debate around reservations has been twisted by politicians and circumstances created by politicians. But it would be worthwhile to go back in history, to a time when non-politicians allowed reservations for the marginalised classes in their princely states.
If you have an uncle who sends you Whatsapp messages about "Reservations are baaad and MERIT IS WHAT WE NEEED", then you should watch this episode and also show it to him.

The privileged hardly understand that they have privileges. You need a seperate episode explaining how and what privilege looks like or in what small forms it has been passed on to us! Because most urban kids have closed their eyes to look beyond what they see around themselves. :(

I happen to NOT use that category even though I was eligible for it too. Though I am not a professional on this subject, I would like to tell you that you might be living in a location where it is completely unnecessary and everyone is treated with dignity and respect, irrespective of their caste or religion. But there are certainly people who are at a disadvantage socially and educationally even today, who definitely need such provisions.

Merit is wholly dependent upon opportunity. It might have been a case that if those, who are uneducated, had gotten a chance to study they might have been more successful than today's meritorious people. It's just that some people are at lack of something that could be in the form of money, social privilege or circumstances.

Why haven't they explained it? It's because there's no valid stand that they can take. Reservation was initially introduced to do away with the separation of people of the basis of economic benefit. It has now become the banner mark for creating the same alienation that it was meant to eradicate. Again i would still adress it as an issue, but those would be on communal grounds. And the people who endorse it for such reasons, let me be clear, i do not defend them. But as in my own case, when the 40 percentiles hold higher positions than the 90 percentiles, that it when you see problems such as inefficiency at typing, not being able to handle numbers, inability to interpret and analyse data. Need i elaborate further?

If you include that detail - basically all the institute giving 50% seats - those seats do translate to a job - mostly in the private sector. @@anweshaguha7366 Not sure I agree with the annihilation of caste concept - that is the idealistic approach. Discrimination finds a way - if not caste then it will be the region or the skin color or the education. The result of the current caste system is economic backwardness which can be answered using reservation for them which will also help them to grow. The social deformation hampers the poor most so that should be the priority. I do understand the rich Dalit also faces discrimination but that should be dealt with laws of the land - not reservation.
