I've found that if you drive the dozer around in the designated pit area with the blade lowered, the dirt just disappears on contact. This is a much quicker way to excavate the pit, the difference being that you lose the proceeds of selling the soil but greatly reduce the maintenance costs (a short usage of the dozer versus protracted usage of the excavator).
