I like how you explained that the volume of a 3" shell is significantly more than double that of a 1.5" shell. A lot of people have a hard time "wrapping their heads" around volume VS diameter. It was nicely laid out here!

Yes and no. Volume yes, but consumer "5 inch can" still can't exceed the 60 gram per shell limit, so 5" is just a marketing gimmick, especially since no one refers to the length of a shell, only the diameter.

Something we forgot to mention is that there are consumer shells marketed as 3" and 5" shells, essentially as a marketing gimmick. The size limit for consumer shells by law is 1.75" diameter (tinyurl.com/yb5cpb22 ) and are limited in the amount of explosive material they can contain (60mg per shell), so they don't have even close to the same bang as a professional 3" shell that has no such limit. The consumer shells marketed as 5" are actually 5" long, not in diameter, and again, are limited in the amount of net explosive weight they can contain. No matter what, consumer shells are limited in the amount of explosive material they can contain, so no matter what the marketing sells them as, they are not as powerful as a professional grade firework of the same size.

I was wondering about that. I've recently gotten hooked on CodyB Pyrotechnics and a dude in Cleveland named pimpdaddee. (It's strangely soothing and cathartic to watch!) I was wondering exactly what the difference is between the 5" shells that look like Red Bull cans and professional shells.
@PyroInnovations
@PyroInnovations 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the 5" "red bull can" is not how we would define a 5" shell. We do use cylindrical shells as well, so for example, a 5" professional cylindrical shell would be 5" in diameter and anywhere from 6" tall to well over a foot tall depending on the effect and if it is a multi-break or not. Doing the same math we did in the video, except this time for a cylindrical shell, a 5" consumer firework would have around 48 cubic inches of volume compared to a professional 5" shell would have closer to 500 cubic inches of volume (with no explosive weight limit). Thanks for your comment!

I was about to ask that lol, I purchased 24 5’’ long shells after New Years. When i saw the video I thought I purchased illegal fireworks but its good to know I didn’t lol. Will long shells vs normal shells be any difference in terms of display?

@@ngythe1king for the first time in a few years I was able to grab some 3&4 inch professional display balls and 4" cylinder Salutes from a buddy last week and it's insane the difference when compared to a comsumer 4 5 or 6 inch 60 gram canisters. I feel like the consumer shell sizing is a gimmick to sell new product and it works bc you know people always have to have what they think is the biggest and baddest out there A big thing to point out is that Pro shells are fused a different way by using what is called quick match and it can be very dangerous. I'm sure you can find videos on KZfaq of what happens when people accidentally light that instead of the slow fuse whether it's by accident or bc they just don't know any better and assume they have plenty of time to get away. Imo, that alone is reason to keep them off the consumer market

I think there’s more of a medium ground here. Sure you have your 1.4G consumer grade fireworks and your 1.3G professional fireworks but I think that when most people tell you that they’ve seen the big professional grade fireworks, they aren’t actually referring to either type. The fireworks that they are seeing are illegally imported overpacked fireworks. Meaning they’re neither 1.4 or 1.3g. They’re fireworks that aren’t restricted to the legal amounts of pyrotechnic materials, so you end up with things like 1.75” canister shells with 100g of composition instead of the legal 60g amount. So they really are seeing shells that are bigger than normal but they’re still not nearly the size of an actual regulated 1.3G firework.

I wondered about that. Used to think they were pro shells until watching this video. But yeah, up close they appear to be the big stuff. However, the short launch time is a clue. My thinking was also motivated by the fact that since there were no pro shows (covid), the pro stuff was leaking into the general population as the manufacturers still need to make a living. Now I know better.

Bryan, there is certainly an exception to every rule, we have seen those videos as well. It’s unfortunate that people think it is OK to fire shells that large in a neighborhood, just look at the example in our video with the 3” low break. We have done way to many interviews with the media when they ask for our expert opinion on why some random person was killed or had their arm blown off to know that professional fireworks in the hands of untrained amateurs, especially in a neighborhood, is likely to lead to an accident or burning down a neighbors house. Good thing it is much more rare for someone to illegally obtain professional fireworks, but those who do put everyone around them in danger. Thanks for your comment!

Consumer canister shells have good lift and breaks. The 9 shot 3" finale cake/boards also have excellent performance. Also seen some single shot tubes that are nice. Probably some of these should be better regulated for consumer use. I am a huge fireworks fan, so much so I went through the red tape to become 1.3g/type 54 licensed. But seeing people that don't have the proper respect for the power of some consumer stuff scares me a little as well as gives the firework industry a bad reputation.

@youtubesucks-yx6kk
@youtubesucks-yx6kk Жыл бұрын
@@WhuDhat I wouldn't say it has much to do with any special State or anything like that. Is simple non compliance as well as supply and demand. Same with anything they try to ban that was/is in high demand. Our law's are so stupid, that the cartels have actually smuggled avocados to the states 😂😂😂 It's hilarious but it's just another example of simple supply and demand. Even cops still want m80s once a year and other stuff like that so it's no surprise that good stuff is floating around. History has shown time and time again that if there is a high demand for a product there will always be a few people willing to supply the current demand. I wouldn't say it's exclusive to any specific state, it's just simple "supply and demand" Take drugs for example, they are generally illegal in almost every setting and place yet we still have a problem with addiction in general. (even though most of those addicts start off using legal from a doctor, then the doctor cuts them off in a day instead of slowly cutting back until the person can quit without any major side effects from it) So then they get it in the streets... once again supply and demand beats most regulations. The only thing the ban did is make it so the states and gov are losing money because they aren't getting their tax money off every item.

Great question! Canister shells have different volume than a sphere, but consumer versions are still restricted to the 60 gram net explosive weight per shell limit. You can do the same volume analysis for the cylinder to cylinder comparison as well to see the different in shell diameter. The only problem is that you can have different lengths of a cylinder, so diameter is not the only variable to consider, which makes the comparison a bit more difficult to do apples to apples. I've been within range of a 3 and 4 inch low break before. The 3 inch was kinda cool looking I'm not gonna lie. A lot of people got urned that night in the crowd me being one of them. I had a star hit me by my shoulder left a little mark too. I'm used to getting burned so it didn't effect me much but some people didn't end up so good. Someone had one land on their head a couple people got holes burned through there clothes and burn marks. We were all at the edge of the caution tape a couple hundred feet away normally that's the best place to be. So after that first low break a couple people moved back but most of us stayed up there. Well not to long after a 4 inch low break happened. At this point most of the people knew this wasn't rite. It was like a waterfall of burning stars and debris falling down ontop of everyone. It was cool looking about 20 feet above your head but when you didn't look away your eyes and face got burned. A couple people didn't understand this from the first time so this time around they learned that lesson. At this point the guys setting it couldn't understand what just happened or why so the one guy walked over to a rack and you could tell he was irritated. He reached down in with flare and let like 3 or 4 of them go at same time you could hear the echo for miles! Lol a few years before that at the same display it started to rain that night out of no where? Normally if it was just a little rain whatever they speed it up a little and that's that show still goes on. Well not this year.. The rain just started pouring now mind you they didn't prepare for rain cause it wasn't supposed to. So after it just started pouring down rain hundreds of people started grabbing chairs and blankets and running in every direction in this huge neighborhood where cars where scattered everywhere. There was a truck load of racks and cakes are down in the middle of this baseball field where everything was set off now mind you these guys do everything with flares by hand. As soon as everyone started to leave they started setting them off 3 times faster sounded like the finale already after only 15 minutes well all but 2 minutes later of total chaos all you hear was a huge explosion that lit up the whole neighborhood it had to be atleast a 5 inch Shell as soon as that went off they lit everything they possibly could. For the next 10 minutes it sounded like a war zone... I've never to this day seen anything like that ever. People were running and screaming rain pouring you couldn't hear anything non stop salute shells going off ontop of everything else car accidents happened non stop flashing lights in the sky all kinds of colors everywhere. It was like if you take a professional finale and multiply it by 3. Then you had sirens on top of everything fire department was already there along with a couple ambulances and some police but they weren't prepared for this. If I remember correctly 1 or 2 people died that night.. the crazy part was it wasn't even from the fireworks! It was all because people freaked out over rain and ran like hell. Someone slipped and fell and because you could only see through the rain from the flashing lights of fireworks people didn't know there was someone on the ground. A few other people got kicked and knocked over I saw a couple people fighting that night too because someone kicked someone in the process of freaking out and screaming. I mean it was just total nonsense and chaos. You don't even see like this in movies it was that bad and all over rain. The fireworks were incredible though! On the plus side.

There are quite a few consumer canister shells that rival pro 3" shells in performance / noise. I know of some display companies that will opt to use consumer instead of 3" because of cost vs. performance.

Thanks for your comment Kevin. We will have to agree to disagree on that one. Consumer shells, no matter the size or shape, are limited to no more than 60 grams net explosive weight. We love 1.4g product and use it in our shows all the time (for smaller shows, shows that are closer to the audience, or to supplement the larger effects), and I have never come across a consumer shell that comes anywhere close to a 3” professional shell in performance / noise in my 20 year career as a professional pyrotechnician. Sometimes it may be a bit deceiving since consumer shells explode closer to the ground and more proximate to the audience. Thanks again for your comment!

@@PyroInnovations Kevin K - It's also worth noting that Pros buy in bulk and don't pay for flashy packaging and needless extra tubes and cardboard. It's pure product. Because of that, a 3 inch pro shell isn't a lot more expensive than the high end consumer product. 72 3 inch pro shells can be had for $275-300 per case for example. Whereas 24 Amateur Excalibur shells run around $60-85-ish here. So for a much larger product and MUCH more symmetrical round breaks that go a good 100 feet higher you wouldn't really go for the 1.4 shell stuff most of the time. The break shape of most consumer canister shells is pretty bad actually. There are exceptions of course, like A) you are shooting close to a crowd and B.) Want lower effects to fill in the front and C.) don't want to risk anything. 1.4 cakes are more common down in front of crowds than the 1.4 shells. My two cents of course.

@nocturnalmayhem, the amount of lift charge used is based on the shells weight, but you can expect a typical 16" shell to have around 4 lbs of black powder lift charge to get it to its ~1,600 ft break altitude.

buying a wasp macing is cheaper than obtaining licensure in most cases. Formulas for fireworks are free, materials are cheap for pumping stars, and the best willow charcoal can be made at home legally . Professional displays are great and all but some of the best fire working outside the Ned Gorskis and basement captains of chemistry are leaps and bounds better. Safer? that's a question of individual liberty. Send it .

I can pretty easily obtain up to 6 inch shells and 4 inch strobe rockets and salute cans the size of a 12 oz can around this time of year. They are becoming increasingly easier to come by every year. But I’d rather just let my neighbors buy them because they’re like 100 bucks for just 1. Just type in certain keywords like salute, coconut, poster, or sticker

$100 per shot??? 😂😂😂 Sounds like your neighbors got ripped off, that or they’re trying to rip you off. 6” Display Shells & salutes are on average $25 -$30 per shot. 4” display shells/rockets and salutes $15 per shot. Keep in mind those are hypothetically “illegally” obtained prices. With a license the cost is substantially lower.

It is very easy to obtain your explosives license to buy 1.3 fireworks if your not a criminal, $100 and takes about 3 months. ALSO next to no red tape if you are buying and shooting as a hobby and not commercially. These fireworks distributors will help you get this license, they want to make money.
@PyroInnovations
@PyroInnovations 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. What you are referring to is just the federal requirement. You also have to deal with state and local jurisdictions (if you are trying to be 100% legal), which vary quite dramatically. There are some states that have almost no requirements, yielding to the federal standard, and some like CA which make it impossible to do legally, in that it doesn't matter if you have the federal license, you still can't use 1.3g. There are of course many states and local jurisdictions that fall in between. Keep in mind that the federal license requires you to store 1.3g in an approved magazine, which the local jurisdiction also has to OK in regards to location, some of which will not grant permission for regardless of your licensing. Can be hard to navigate the patchwork of laws depending on where you live, but we would agree that the federal license is the easy first step. Thanks for your comment!

Jose, thanks for your comment. I want to make sure I understand the question. Are you asking if a cake says 1.3G if it is 1.3G? There are certainly exceptions to every rule and people still obtain 1.3G product illegally on occasion, but it is a rare occasion due to what we mentioned in the video, not to mention an accident waiting to happen. Stay safe, thanks again for your comment.

@@PyroInnovations as i understand it, legal cakes split their 500g limit between all the shots, with each shell being 60g or less. A single cake can't possibly have 60g a shot with that many shots. Either the cake is illegal, or it's actually multiple cakes that are lit simultaneously.
@evolution2001
@evolution2001 3 жыл бұрын
@@zaphod77 In consumer fireworks, i.e. 1.4g classification, the 'gram' rating refers to the total amount of explosive composition that can be ignited by a single fuse. So a 500g cake, regardless of how many tubes are in it, have no more than 500g TOTAL. That's why your fireworks with 192 shots are going to have much smaller tubes than say a 9-shot ("Nine On A Board"..."NOAB"). 500g split among 192 tubes or 500g split across 9 tubes...it's still a total of 500g or less. Your NOAB breaks are just going to be larger than rapid fire smaller tubes in a 192 shot cake. That's also why reloadable canisters are 60g. In 1.4g class, 60g is the most explosive composition allowed in a single shot. Doing the math on that... a 500g NOAB is at most 55.5g (500/9). So technically your 60g reloadable shells will give bigger bang for your buck. Lastly, keep in mind that consumer fireworks is all about MARKETING. Just because a cake says it's 200/350/500g doesn't mean that it entirely is. A 500g cake might only be 390g of explosive. A 60g canister may only be 49g of explosive.

It absolutely was, we know it for a fact. 3 inch shells can break a couple hundred feet in diameter, and because this is a low break, the scaling when compared to the houses look substantial, but we can promise you that this is absolutely a 3 inch shell. Peonies are some of the harder breaking shells, so that certainly played a factor into the size as well.

As long as they are fired from clean and properly fitting tubes, they will not cause problems. But if you place a shell in the wrong tube (or even a dirty tube), even a small difference will cause a significant reduction in lift, and risks a low break. Low breaks are BAD.

Some were regular but alot of it looked home made, You could tell when the camera zoomed in, and when the camera man walks up to the leftover peices. Sometimes they Looked like a paper towel roll with some masking tape to close it off. They aren't necessarily buying this. Alot of it looks like something made in a basement. Besides, a ban would literally push the black market. I've never seen a pro shell, at a store or in a tent, never been offered one. But if consumer gets banned you can guarantee that the professional stuff, along with sketchy homemade stuff from people who dont know what they are doing would make it on the street alot more.
