Consumer Reports' Top Reliable Vehicles of 2024 (Some Are WRONG)

Consumer Reports gave us their top 10 most reliable cars of 2024. They included SUVs and more in their big yearly list of 2024 reliable vehicles. However, they're wrong and I'm going to show you why. It's not a great idea (in my opinion) to just blindly follow the Consumer Reports list. Many of these are still great

The eCVT on the toyota hybrids are a completely different animal from a standard CVT. Tne eCVT doesn't use pulleys and a metal band. eCVT uses electric motors and a planetary gearset. Completely different.

here in norway we have lots of toyota and lexus hybrid taxis. They can easily pass 200.000km without any major issues. One guy had a lexus hybrid taxi, and i think it reached over 300.000km on the original hybrid battery, and no issues with the e-cvt. Now all taxis must be fully electric when bought new, so some taxi owners now must buy used cars to escape the EV mandate.

I'll say this about Toyota, they wouldn't be doing turbos if they couldn't hold the reliability they have had. I'd still trust a luxus with turbos over a Mercedes with them, that's for sure. Toyota does extensive reliability test.

Do any carmakers make their own turbochargers? From the beginning the lubrication was the weak point! The oils are way better/different now compared to before. Are there any turbos without being connected to the coolant system? You can't compare today's turbos to those of yesterday. Two different things! Then turbos can be made more or less complex, of course, to a cost of reliability. Then you may not turn the engine off when the turbo is very hot! But if you have read the driving instructions, you know that for sure.

The updated CVT transmission has used a chain not a built driven one like jatco since 2016. It's still not my favorite transmission either, but there have been limited issues. Consumer Reports doesn't take any money from the manufacturers of the products they review. In addition to testing numerous cars, they also rely on the vehicle survey data submitted by their subscribers. In fact, they usually go back several years to let prospective owners know not only what vehicles are less reliable, the problem areas, and the model years that were least and most reliable. 18:35

There have been folks who have commented, actually gave a criticized retort, to my prior comments about driving our two Toyotas: A 2022 Tacoma Sport (naturally aspirated V6) and a 2023 RAV 4 Adventure (non-turbo, 4 cyl) as being "boring". If boring means proven reliability, so be it. Hopefully the new gen Toyotas with the turbo fours will continue to maintain Toyota reliability. And if things do go south, the cost to repair is much less expensive as is maintenance.

There is no doubt that Toyotas are boring vehicles. They have never advertised themselves as building exciting cars. Let's be real. No one is going to mistake the ride quality in a European car for a Toyota. They build reliable, efficient cars and that's what consumers want. The downside to that is that you get a relatively mundane, no-frills ride.

I currently have '21 BMW M5 (purchased new 8/20) and have ZERO issues. Agree with the first gen N63 engines; I brought one of the first 2010 BMW 550i (first N63) and it was in the shop 60% of the time with turbo heating issues/turbo cooling lines, burning oil and etc. due to hot vee turbos configuration. PS I had a 2014 550 (replaced the 2010) and a 2018 M550 with no issues. The key with these engines, you need to let the car cool off for a few minutes to let the turbos cool off before shutting the car off.

@@manofsesame3024 Correct - ANY car with a hot V engine setup (especially V8s) such as BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Audis and etc. where turbochargers are placed neatly between the two banks of cylinders. Pro: Less turbo lag Con: Excess heat. Bottom line, if you shut off the engine before letting it cool down then the electric fan will kick in and drain your battery sooner than later. Just the nature of the beast.

I know a good mechanic in Kansas that would disagree with your assessment of German made vehicles especially BMW’s & Audi’s. He HATES working on German vehicles because 1) They use far too much plastic in their engine spaces & 2) They sure as hell DON’T make them for mechanics to work on. He had to charge one customer over 2 thousand dollars to replace a $30 dollar THERMOSTAT because of having to basically remove the entire front end & engine front of the vehicle because they located the thermostat inside the engine block behind all the belts, pulleys, radiator, water pump, front fascia, headlights, etc..

Mazda3 beats Corolla in looks and performance, but the Corolla is more practical and less risky for reliability. Certain years of the 2.5 liter engine has issues with cracked cylinder heads. This is with both the turbo and non turbo model. It remains to seen whether this issue is actually fixed in the newest models. The Corolla sedan barely has enough room for 6 foot tall adults in the back seat. The Mazda 3 is even smaller in back to the point that the lack of space in the back seat may make it completely unusable in that case.

My 2020 Honda CR-V has almost 90K km on it and on the original brake pads and rotors. I’ve never experienced anything like it. I’ve had a 2010 & 2016 similar models and usually replace the pads at 50K & 80 K. I have done more highway driving and this model has no oil dilution problem like the 2017-18 models. Original All-Season tires as well but I do have Winter Tires as well. Extraordinary quality at 4-years old. I’ve had a 1998, 2006, 2011 & 2013 Toyota Sienna as well. Always had the same maintenance too. Around 50K I had to replace the front pads, All-Season Tires were good for about 75K. 1 engine problem with my 2011 Sienna. No other issues to report other than around 120K I had fuel injection issues which required cleaning or replacement. Never had an issue with Honda engines. Very reliable and great gas mileage. I would recommend both for reliability other than my 2011 Toyota. Engine belt went at 2-years old and destroyed the engine. 1st time Toyota tried a 4-cylinder engine in a Minivan. Toyota does take more risks than Honda… usually Honda won’t put a new technology on the road until it’s proven. Toyota will. You can’t beat Honda engines on performance and reliability.

BMW is a luxury brand, they must be aesthetically pleasing. But reliability is not their forte, we all know that. BMW does not belong on a “reliability” list. Heck, Consumer Report say they are more reliable than the Highlander. This kind of discrepancy bring their credibility into sharp focus.

The B48 and B58 are supremely reliable engines, the ZF8HP transmission they use in most all their cars is bulletproof. BMW earned a spot on this list. This isn't the E60 M5 we're talking about, even Toyota is using BMW powertrains and components now.

@@embiggens1they aren’t supremely reliable when compared to other non performance brands. The b58/48 use lots of plastic parts and are tuned to deliver high performance numbers. Zf8 while reliable is not bulletproof proof and costs a fair amount when you service it.

I like what you're saying about Mazda & its improving reliability, but my concern is with its design. The Toyota Corolla looks like it was designed by people who are talented in that sort of thing, but (in my mind) the entire Mazda fleet looks extruded... like big balls of greasy clay pushed out of a machine. Pointy on the front & round on the back. Inspired by a wind tunnel with nothing more to it. edit: readability

I was thinking of getting a Corolla Cross hybrid if my car turns out to be unreliable, but after I looked at actual owner reviews, I had second thoughts. Some people love their 2024 Corolla, but others regret their purchase due to a loud engine and sensor and electrical problems. Some say their new car is at Toyota more often than they have it to drive. Corollas used to be reliable, but I'm not entirely sure about that anymore. (I haven't totally made up my mind yet.) I also don't treat Consumer Reports as the word of God like I used to. I don't think their decisions are scientific or unbiased, and they reveal no data as to how they arrived at their decisions, only the percentages they arrived at. They use their road tests, their opinion based on previous years, their annual survey (which many readers don't fill out) and subscriptions for all magazines are constantly dropping. That means they rely on a lot of qualitative data (not quantitative), especially their own opinions, which are subject to bias. Maybe I will need to look at a RAV-4.

Those Toyota Cross Hybrids are made in a Mazda factory in USA producing both the Toyota Corolla Cross and the Mazda CX-50 on two side-by-side assembly line. So that's why some people having problems. Get a made in Japan Toyota Corolla Sedan hybrid or RAV4 Hybrid made in Japan. I have a cousin he's a master technician working in California at $50 an hour for Lexus dealership he sees more Lexus problems when made in USA or Canada and usually no big issues when those Lexus are made in Japan. Reliability is NOT a measure of vehicle Quality BUT a measure of vehicle COST. All reliability is built into every vehicle by it's manufacturer AND can be clearly measured in the time the operator spends behind the steering wheel before he/she pays to have that reliability restored. Take luxury vehicles for example; they are designed to be NO LeSs reliable than ALL other vehicles BUT What they are not designed to do (in general) is keep that reliability for a long sustained period of uSe. This is because current fashionable driving luxury and AGING; do NOT go Hand and Hand. Thus the luxury car, ALSO being a measure of financial SuCceSs, it's newness says you are doing well enough to afford it's short life of from NEW reliability. There is nO need for anyone to feaR a uSed luxury vehicle, as long as they aRe Willing & Ready to spend that "chunk OF change" IN order to re$tore it back to it's highe$t reliability. From a real Customer. Well CR is full of it. I had a 2019 RDX A Spec. NYC gas mileage 9 to 12, Blank display along with unable to change drive mode after just starting the car and oh GOD that awful track pad. Acura is not Acura like they were in the 90's. So glad for the pandemic that I sold the car back with no loss. Yes Acura tried to fix it piss poor customer service from Corp down. And I did not drive it hard. Never again will I buy a Acura they treat you like you bought a FORD. Now I have a 2022 Lexus RX 350 Prem, what can I say well NYC gas millage 12 to 17, everything works. Fit and finish top notch. Better gas millage with a heaver car,. Wow what a shocker. Oh yeah and that is with Regular gas not Prem like the RDX. Trust me I wanted to love Acura like I did in the 90's but they are not like they were in the 90's. They can advertise driving the RDX like a NSX but lets face reality it's SUV not a NSX sports car. Stay away from Acura if you want a good car.
