I feel like I'm outside your target demographic but I'm glad I've found your content. I went back and watched your earliest videos and you've grown so much as a presenter, you absolutely deserve even more than the 300 subs you seem to have added in the last ~week since I subscribed myself.

I have been thinking a LOT about the intersection of children and overconsumption and very thoroughly appreciate your take and perspective as a parent! I've been thinking about this via the lens of child influencers and less about how do parents make choices about their kids or with their kids. So thank you for giving me much to think about
@Alexas.nobuyyear

@shawnaripari omg I feel like that is the NEXT level (or one of them), since child influencers also imply either parental support of that "career" or neglect, if the child is operating more independently and/or if the parent is "forcing" them to. I would still love to see your thoughts on child influencers, and if it's helpful to you I'm happy to contribute a "parental perspective" to your research/video if you do end up doing one!

My children are now 28, 30, and 37. When my oldest started asking for a cell phone because her friends had one we said no. One parent was always home and you don’t need one till you get a part time job, then you have to pay your own bill and there was only a necessary plan put on.( not unlimited data,call,text.) When computers became prevalent in school for homework we had one desktop. My oldest then asked for their own laptop with the same results, when you have a job you can buy your own and the other two could not use it. This was not because we didn’t have the money we wanted teach them. From the time they were young we also said before we left the house to go shopping, don’t expect to get something every time we go out. (Junk) I started with all my children to go for a walk some evenings, I would take all three at once and then one at a time. Into the walk I would slowly ask questions and they would open up more and more. As they became teenagers we still went one on one and talked open and honestly about anything they wanted, or nothing at all .(just laugh). We also sat them down as teenagers and roughly went over our income and expenses and remind them that there are three of them not just them in the family. They never lacked for anything but I also wanted to explain that you can’t have everything handed to you in life.

I really love that cardigan 😍 this video was so interesting for me, I've just hit a stage with my five year old where all he wants to do is buy things. I'm not on a high income (stay at home mum/part time student) so I have to be quite ruthless about saying no, and sometimes it feels like a constant battle. He doesn't use a tablet or games console, and we recently banned him from KZfaq as it was having such an adverse effect on his behaviour, although what he was watching seemed totally harmless - I assume he was overstimulated. So he's exposed to much less advertising than similar-aged kids and we're already floundering a little bit - hoping that we can instill some of our values and ideas around overconsumption before the teenage years arrive, once he's a little older and better able to grasp concepts around money.

This is so interesting to me, I haven't run into that yet (I have a 4 year old girl) and I wonder what his motivation for wanting to buy stuff is, and what could possibly fill that desire instead. Like is it for fun/to go against "boredom", or is it hard for him to see what he has already when compared to the shiny new things, or is it seeing what schoolmates have, etc? There are times when my 4 year old will want something when we are out at a shop, but it's often clothes (like at the stores that have both clothes and groceries here in the US), and we are usually successful reminding her that yes, this is pretty but she already has something similar at home. I'm sure I'm going to run into a ton of this later though. I have also been very surprised by how they'll pick up on complex ideas and values, so I wouldn't be afraid to be completely honest with him on all fronts - the "saving money" aspect as well as the "if we don't need it it's better for the earth to choose less stuff" aspect - not suggesting that you don't already do these things, but just putting it out here in the conversation. I do also think it's helpful when we have to be ruthless in saying no, to remind ourselves as a parent that oftentimes the kids at these ages aren't actually the ones taking care of the "stuff" we buy them, it's US doing the laundry and sometimes picking up the toys even if we have the best intentions of guiding them to do those tasks (to whatever degrees they're capable) by themselves 😅

I totally agree. Today we were singing with grandma and grandaunt in the garden. I would really add to help the kids build meaningful relationships offline so they KNOW what it feels. In addition to all the meaningful activities screens can be a good tool to learn. As with your music video - I don’t think it’s scary these young people found the video online, I love how they transferred it to their hobby and their real life. My kids - as I mentioned before - watch concerts on KZfaq with me. My son loves The Beatles ❤ of course we have to be role models and guide them by using Social Media mindfully. With consumerism I am a bit anxious about school. Until now my kids simply wore hand-me-downs. On toy day in kindergarten they admire the extremely expensive (and overwhelmingly electronic) toys of the others but LOVE the book or doll they brought. But especially my 4yo daughter starts to fancy things like glitter dresses and Baby Born (I don’t like it because I think a doll that you can feed is an invitation to bacteria and fungus and glitter gets as micro plastic into the water with every wash and YES I was kind of a tomboy and always preferred cars or bricks). I now have the deal with her that she has to wear some items from her brother but gets 3 per category Second Hand how she wants it. No glitter that is loose on the clothes. How I handle her Christmas wish for a Baby Born doll I don’t know yet. But how much restriction will push them in the opposite direction later? Where should I let some ideals fall (like repairing ripped knees in jeans) to not let them be the weird, uncool kids? My 5, almost 6yo son will start school this summer. He is gifted, has concentration problems (we work on it by going to a special therapy, dance class and learning the guitar) and likes long hair and dresses. He will be an outsider no matter what. I am happy he already knows some kids in class from kindergarten. I try to give him self esteem to be himself. But do I do him a favor with sending him to school with handmade clothes? With patches on his knees? Now he is proud of it but I fear the other kids…

@Siures right, it's hard, I know I often felt bad about wearing hand me downs/secondhand clothes sometimes as a child, but I also didn't have my mom explaining the values and maybe some things to say back if people made fun of me. I don't know if that would have made a difference if someone told me having used and mended clothes was actually a good thing because it shows you use your things, which is the best way to love them, or that wearing the same things is actually a sign of style and confidence...not to mention a sign of loving our home the earth. Or even that caring too much about things is not the sign of true friendship. We can support each other in this journey - let me know if you find things that help!!

Not a shopper, not a parent! But... This is so obviously important stuff! The next generation will need extensive savings if they want to gain the American dream of further education and/or a house. Buying unnecessary stuff will cut into those dreams. Capitalism is a double-edged sword! Jobs and revenue are important! Taxes help run our government ( which I for one think is a necessary structure!) But over consumption ( that which this channel is all about) threatens much of our decent way of life. Parents need to think long and hard about what world they want for their children!

Ohh yes-they don’t have the ability to discern reality from the fantasy created by those haul influencers. The frontal lobe isn’t fully developed and impulse control is nil. Parents have a purpose and we have had our legs cut out from under us by social media. That’s my experience with my own kids.

@isabellerininger6249 yeah it's tough! I feel like maybe like 2-3 generations ago felt similar about TVs and ads, cartoons, etc but for some reason I think social media is worse...

I have an idea I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on. You've mentioned the aspirational lifestyle and I think part of that is the aestheticization of life. In my teens I really suffered with feeling like my whole life had to fit whatever aesthetic was 'cool' at the time. While it was part of learning who I was and my taste It also lead to overconsumption and decluttering. Because it was the era of Tumblr I was able to narrow down very specific items and once a new aesthetic came around the items felt so dated. When I wasn't able to acquire said items, I felt as if I couldn't express myself or was deficient. Thankfully I have grown out of this (atleast mostly!). I'd be curious to know your thoughts on this and if you ever fell into this trap. Also how you think you would feel or respond if your kids wanted things to fit into a specific 'aesthetic' or subculture they felt their identity was tied to.

Thank you SO MUCH for this - I have been having a lot of thoughts about aesthetics and style (as applied to everything, clothes, makeup, homewares and beyond) and I also did have a long period in late high school/early college where I explored almost every "trending" aesthetic in especially my clothing style. So yes I was definitely DEEP into this trap as a young adult and I have also wondered how much of this is kind of "inevitable" in the journey of personal discovery (because of how consumer culture is set up - not that it is literally inevitable but just that we are so pushed to consume to express ourselves) and how the "consuming" aspect can possibly be avoided. As a young middle-aged? adult (I'm 31!) I definitely DO still identify with "aesthetic subcultures" but to a less extreme degree and my broader "tastes" have not changed for perhaps the past 5-7 years, it feels like I've "settled". And as for kids - I would want kids in general to feel free to express their identity however they want, but in the way that represents the most "responsible" consuming that can be done - so it'd involve thrifting, being very selective about the "wardrobe basics" so that they can fit into multiple aesthetics, and for right now their rooms are decorated in a way that I would be happy to use as a guest space in the future even it's a bit "cutesy" - and I figure they will have one opportunity when they are teenagers if they feel strongly about changing their room aesthetic but we will have a discussion about how ideally, these will be the things they will like long-term and possibly take with them when they move out. I am going to do a week-long series on the concept of "style in this era of influence" and am going to try and explore these on video then (first week of August, I think!) so again thank you for this comment. Sorry if the long response is more than you bargained for 😆
