I went on a low-buy for makeup this year, prioritizing using what I already own and potentially buying makeup that is in singles and can be reused to dupe eyeshadow palettes that I like but don't want to purchase, and it has been so cathartic. I am pretty sure if instead of going on a low-buy I had been active at reaching out to brands and promoting their stuff I would have hit monetization by now. I just don't want to be that person. I used to get PR requests as comments on my videos when I had 100 subscribers, it was ridiculous! I think some brands just spam everyone until something sticks.

I'm with you on the problems with PR, DPC, and conspicuous consumption. Personally, I think the PR highlights the fundamentally paradoxical nature of influencers. Influencers want to appear relatable to keep the view counts high. Yet, influencers also need to be aspirational so that people would feel that the only thing keeping them from becoming like the influencers is purchasing the items that influencers are promoting. PRs skews the opinions of the influencers (most likely in favour of the brand), and I think the instant gratification and novelty from PRs could easily replace critical thinking and the most important question: "Is it truly a good product that can make an intentional purchase with long-term benefits?" Frankly speaking, I intensely dislike PR and PR haul content. The sheer amount of packaging alone makes me feel uncomfortable. /end rant😉

I saw a forum thread on contentedness, linked from a WSJ post last year, and while the discussion itself is on fashion and consumption habits, the idea to step away from shopping towards appreciation, or contentedness for the things we own already, was insightful. While I am also working on my own insecurities and developing other hobbies, I also needed to reframe that shopping itch. And that was: maybe the new (or thrifted) thing doesn’t have that different of an effect, from what I already have. And that there’s also a certain pride from using a bag or garment for x amount of years. Another thing that’s helped me is to realize that I was spending more time than I’d like thinking about aesthetics and design elements, in clothing and decor. And it can get overwhelming when I’m doing that, as if on autopilot! So it’s been helpful for me to be aware of that habit and stepping back when I can.

The ick. I felt that very strongly this week . I won’t mention the name of the channel but I’ll say she is known for reviewing makeup and has an extensive library of makeup with which to compare new makeup items to and to help consumers make good choices when making purchases and I generally think she is lovely and I’ve enjoyed many of her videos. Well, she is doing a no buy in July in order to enjoy what she has. I thought that was cool and in line with what I am trying to do. Well, she was on vacation and came home to a variety of PR and said she chose to present it to us because if she waited until her no buy was over the items would be old. She suggested that if the viewer was also on a no buy they could put items in their shopping carts until they are ready to make purchases. What was the ick? The volume of PR she received, all those packages, it had to be I don’t know, $1000 worth (I could be way off but there was a lot and makeup is expensive). I thought, sure, she’s on a no buy, using what she has and not making purchases and then all these new items arrive…..and if she were to wait until her no buy was over she’d have 4x the amount of new stuff to present to us later. I decided I am done with hauls for now. I can still enjoy other makeup content but not the hauls. It just feels so excessive.

I don't understand the appeal of those PR unboxing videos besides just rubber-necking. Honestly, it looks like my worst nightmare. I can't imagine getting boxes of stuff that I didn't order just sent to me. The mental load on how to use it up, store it, or give it away would be a full time job.

Agree completely with your thoughts/feelings on excessive PDC. Starting a few years ago my "taste" in YT content has gravitated to vast majority educational, inspirational, etc., as opposed to consumerism oriented...becoming conscientiously more "minimal" in all aspects of my life have completely squelched my appetite for sponsored content, big haul videos, etc. I still do watch a few "lifestyle" channels where shopping, eating out, etc .are often highlighted...one from Japan because it is very calming and actually has "influenced" me to take things a bit slower in my daily life. It did inspire me to buy a couple things secondhand but not anything sponsored, and I do love/wear them often, so not money wasted.

The idea of bringing in a bunch of stuff or "hauling" gives me anxiety, I've never been able to watch such videos. Where would I put that stuff? And then the packing! I just started a KZfaq, but fortunately I don't think I will attract the brands with my channel 😂

I can't imagine allowing too many brands to inundate me with boxes of stuff i have to talk about and hawk to my mutuals and followers. It seems stressful and its not even novel anymore. I wonder what thw new thing will be after all this.

I am fighting the urge to buy when I travel. I bought less in Ireland than I might have and I am getting use out of everything I bought. My partner has gotten on the less consumerism train and decluttering train a little more slowly than me but he is coming around. We bought hoodies for 3 family members in Ireland but all 3 people wear hoodies and didn't have too many. They were high quality. We bought a lot of consumables and we didn't have room to store them in our luggage so we bought a Guinness backpack in a souvenir shop and took them as a carryon in that bag. We gifted it to an Irish descended friend along with his consumables and it ended up not being a useless wasted purchase -- he uses that backpack all the time! We are hoping to go to Japan in September 2025 and I will really limit my souvenirs. My partner will be traveling 4 hours alone to a small town that one of his favorite authors is from and will be getting souvenirs from there for a once in a lifetime opportunity (books, etc.) I plan to shop in Shibuya because there is a certain girly style that is in Japan that I enjoy that is trendy among young (and also slightly older office worker) women and I am free size in Japanese clothing so I have a lot of choice for shopping in Japan. I don't know if I will end up buying anything but I at least want to look around and try a few things on. I would limit myself to one really beloved piece that would work with my wardrobe and color palette that I could see myself wearing for decades if I buy a piece. We probably won't buy consumables or a lot of products we will be attracted to (we love cute stuff) because nowadays you can get those things in the US.

TV ( and now the social media platforms) recklessly display gross overconsumerism! Some women have closets full to the brim with every conceivable shoe and bag! Yet there are real people in the world who have no shoes! No wonder viewers are unhappy! No wonder they want the good life without the work to actually obtain it! Capitalism creates markets for excess! We are rarely happy with what we already have!

Yes, and thank you! This year has kind of turned into a "low buy" and ultimately it's the more sustainable and realistic way to keep this habit - I'm still curious to see if I CAN do a strict no buy so I might try again next year, but it's really just to "say I did it" rather than because I believe it's the only way to change this habit.

To add on to what you've said about "ask yourself before you buy" I now ask myself everytime I buy anything non-consumable "do I want this for life?" and the answer is frequently "no." I'm now so selective about what I bring into my life because of this. No buy truly rewired my brain and for me it was a muscle that got better with more practice and use!

Heyo, it's ok. I did a no buy almost a decade ago first with clothing and then with makeup and have continued it mostly organically since then. I did a quick assessment at the beginning of the year and knew that I did not need anything clothing or makeup wise. For me personally, I actually did enjoy a strict complete no buy because it freed up my entire mental load. There are no multiple rules that I had to think about everytime I'm faced with a decision because there is only one question "do I buy or not" and the answer is always "no." There is no "what if I buy this for you and give it to you so you're not technically buying it?" The answer is still no. Hope this offers a perspective that may be helpful to those who have not considered it.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear 12 сағат бұрын
Yes absolutely! Haha I JUST recorded a video a couple days ago (probably out next week) on the "#1 reason no buy actually works" and it's exactly that, the answer is automatically "no!" Which I know is perhaps the obvious point and arguably a "clickbait title" but it's just supposed to be a fun video (with a little walk through a Target store demonstrating how it's working 😄). Finally I am reaching the point of enjoying that aspect of mental freedom! I love how you said you did an assessment at the beginning of the year to know that you didn't need anything, this sounds like a great practice.

I know! I was so surprised! Can you believe how popular Korean culture is now? I had no interest in Korea for most of my life, but discovered BTS during the pandemic from watching so many Asian food videos. Then I "met" some wonderful American fans (women in their 70s and 80s!) of BTS on KZfaq, who got me hooked on K-dramas. I never thought that I would become such a fan. If you've never watched K-dramas before, you might find Crash Landing on You or Extraordinary Attorney Wood fun. Also, you might find Korean sunscreens appealing. They have more advanced filters than U.S. sunscreens (Dr. Dray is an excellent source). Plus, they are significantly less expensive.

Excuse me using your comments section as a confessional... But I broke my no-buy yesterday. Not in any big way, but I'm kind of annoyed with myself. I was buying a t-shirt from a friend's market stall (they have a new business) as a birthday present for my mum, but they had a deal if you bought two and there was a really nice one in my size 🙃 I didn't break the bank and my husband says I was supporting a friend so I should cut myself some slack about it, but I kind of wanted to stick to the letter of the no-buy this time around 🙈 On the topic of the video, I have pretty much paused decluttering for now. If I hadn't cleared out as much as I have the last few years we wouldn't be able to physically move in our house without being knee-deep in clothes 😅 but there are so many things I wish I had back that I realise I'm not good at making the right decisions. At the moment I'm just packing things away that don't fit, I'll do a big try-on somewhere down the line after pregnancy, anything that really won't fit again I'll send to Thrift+ (reselling without the hassle, but I think it's a UK thing). I also host clothing swaps with friends every now and again, it's always a brilliant day, love doing that.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear 12 сағат бұрын
Please feel free to use comments as confessions! It's partly what I'm here for after all. I think your situation touched on a ton of very specific reasons that make it super hard not to buy and I don't think it was "wrong" of you to do so! Especially in support of an "in-real-life" friend it would be incredibly difficult to say no, when you have budget for it, when it's an extremely practical and pretty item and you're already shopping for a present - it's exactly the scenario where making the purchase makes sense in so many ways. I also wanted to stick to the letter of no buy this year and since I "failed" I've been debating whether I want to try again next year just to "prove that I can" - but, ultimately the end goal is to have a better relationship with shopping in general and more control over buying things I don't need, so, in many ways the "no buy" is kind of an arbitrary challenge to serve a larger purpose. If not for "no buy" I think that sounds like a purchase you could otherwise feel really good about, so as far as I'm concerned you may as well feel good about it (or at least, don't feel bad about it!) and focus on the "progress over perfection" path of the no buy 🙂 Making the right decluttering decisions is tough! It always comes back to the feeling that I bought it in the first place for some kind of reason, so how can I be sure the reason/feeling that I need that thing won't come up again? And then so many declutters we see on social media are done by influencers who are getting rid of PR they got for free or hauls they used for content, knowing they are making room for more PR or products for content - we "regular consumers" are trying to break out of that cycle! So yes by all means hang onto anything you have doubts about, I'm doing the same this year!

That was very eye opening. I watch / used to watch the same channels, and after watching your other video about unsubscribing from KZfaq creators, I cleaned my subscriptions as well, because I noticed that I started buying things they mention in videos. I also think HLP is a master at providing a para-social friendship with her viewers - and I think she does genuinely care about the people who watch her too, so I don't think it's fake by any means, but because we feel like she's a friend giving a recommendation I think we often WANT to try the things she talks about (at least that's how it was for me). I used to watch all her videos no matter what the topic even though I'm not really into trying new makeup products, just to feel like I could "catch up" with her - now I've realized that perhaps I don't need to do that. Or if I do, I can be more prepared to NOT buy 😅

Haha I do hate grocery shopping but love every other shopping 😂 I like the idea of visualizing a product’s end of life to understand where ultimately this item will end up. I have never done that but I think it will be helpful. I’m with you on viral products, that is my weak spot and social media capitalizes on this insecurity in me. I love to try the best products but now it does seem like the whole viral label doesn’t mean anything anymore. Influencers claim everything is the best thing ever but I know now they just want to sell something and get paid 😅 and since starting a short term no buy, I have found myself enjoying the stuff I currently have so I hope I can continue to stay strong! As I mentioned in my last video, I went through the devastation of hurricane beryl in Houston this week and that really taught me how important savings are (especially in Texas). I have power now but some people are still without and not everyone necessarily has the funds to book a hotel or extra cash to go out every day for fresh food. It has been a hellish week but the city is slowly coming out the other side but the lessons is to always have an emergency fund.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear 12 сағат бұрын
You're right and I think the "everything is a viral product" thing is actually making it easier - I used to really want to try every "viral" product too but now there are just so many that it feels ridiculous, like not everything can be a viral-worthy product and at this point it's just being used to sell and make money. So happy to hear you now have power and I hope you didn't have other damages to deal with, hopefully life is getting back to normal - I think I had a similar realization when the tornadoes happened here in the Midwest and really damaged houses a few miles from where I live and thinking that if that DID happen to us, we would very quickly have to start relying on credit cards because exactly like you said, we wouldn't have $$ to stay at a hotel and eat out for very long before we ran out of our emergency fund, so we really need to build that up more!

Life is returning to normal, thankfully, and our complex didn't suffer much property damage. Although I think it may be time to leave Texas! I do not think I have it in me to try to survive another storm..I have been through a few in my lifetime, and I'm over it. I hope everyone is doing well, and I know it's easier said than done to save money for emergencies, but I believe in us to do it!

Just watched your awesome video and now I'll watch from the beginning of your channel. I don't have TikTok but YT is another story. These days, I'm watching Alyssa, Christina and Signe and other channels that do not overly promote consumerism, and I'd put HLP in that category as well (although I did buy that eye mask and am now on my second one, haha). Maybe because they live in cold climates and have a different skin type (HLP) or body type (Alyssa) or style (Christina). I was influenced the most by Lydia Tomlinson (and bought SO much, almost all of which has since been decluttered). Her channel is so heavily sponsored and it took me a few years to realize that she was pushing brands and clothes that deviated from her (and my) preferred minimal, sculptural style, so I no longer watch her. When I see several channels at once pushing Lily Silk, Sezanne, or other brands, I know now to not be influenced. I'm still way too susceptible though -- now I'm looking at Onitsuka Tigers, which I'd never heard of until today!
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear 13 сағат бұрын
I've seen Lydia Tomlinson's channel and perhaps luckily, found her style a little TOO refined for me to be drawn to (although I do also like sculptural and minimal looks just perhaps less "elevated" and more "casual/relaxed" to fit in with my typical environments). Agree that when it's an onslaught of Lilysilk or whatever it is, it's kind of easier to skip because it feels like blatant advertising and not genuine reviews!

I actually decluttered everything i was influenced to buy. I looked around in my space last night and tried think about things inwas influenced to buy, but i got almost nothing left. Thats a freeing feeling. The things i have left are things that i picked out in the physical store, that i really liked and found usage of. I have a vase with bubbles on, that was super popular at a time, and every store was full of them but i did not like most of them. The one i have was purchased because i really lived the rainbow the white speckled bubbles made within it. I dont need more bubble vases, but at that time of purshase i needed a vase and i chose it because i liked that specific one. I do have one necklace pendant i was influenced to wish for once tho. I just said i wished for it because i didn’t need anything else. (I wished for donations for a cat shelter too but well they chose give me an item). Thank you so much! Finally, perhaps I have found a practical outlet for what can sometimes be considered, "overthinking" in daily life 😅

It sounds like you’re extremely creative individual. Maybe you’re trying to express that creativity in the things you buy. Do you have a hobby or a way to release that creative energy?

I'm not sure if I said in this video but I'm actually a professional musician - it's my "real job" - but I haven't been able to put in as much practice as I'd like for the past few years and I do think this contributed to my shopping issue! I also feel like this year, creating these videos has become a kind of hobby that IS helping, slowly but surely. So in other words - thank you, you are right! 😊

Again a bit of devil's advocacy: I recently bought a summer shirt at a resale store and it is now my very favorite piece of clothing! It was probably too expensive when new for me to have considered so beautifully made of great material. Sometimes it's just time for a new piece. But caution and control need to be part ( an important part as you remind us!) of the equation

Shopping is a diversion. Love the saying’ One isn’t enough, but two is too many’♥️

I think with work we can make one enough? If we are too strict, we may rebel?

Ooh that's an interesting saying - I don't know if I've heard it before but to me it almost implies to me that "enough" exists in the in-between space of one and two, or in other words, the space of "wanting another one" but not having or acquiring another. This actually makes a lot of sense if I think of it in terms of say, eating croissants...it's almost the best part after finishing the first one and feeling like it was so good you want another, but you know you won't have two...a different kind of satisfaction in a way. Thanks for sharing!
