Is the all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia just a Tundra with a cap on the back? We share our first impressions of Toyota's largest SUV, how it compares to competitors like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade (or even the 4Runner!), and if it can carry the torch for the dearly departed Land Cruiser. We also discuss whether using a different octane gas, for example 87 vs. 88 octane, can harm your car's engine.
SHOW NOTES:
0:00: 2023 Toyota Sequoia first impressions
15:59: Can using a higher octane gas than is recommended in your owner’s manual harm your engine?

For those who want to smooth out the ride on their solid rear axle Sequoia, buy a model with more sensible 18" rims not the patently absurd 22s found on the Capstone.😁

Amen..!! I even change 20in wheels came on my 4Runner Limited to regular 4Runner 17in wheels. More than the comfort I would say so much more practical putting weight on the back on hardware store runs (more rubber to take the weight) and protection from potholes & curb rash.

If you have vehicle with a well sorted suspension big rims are not a problem. My 08 lincoln mkx rides better on 20s then my 06 accord did on 16s. Having a solid rear axle causes lots of rise imperfections

On a recent trip, we had a choice of rental vehicles, and a number of folks in my group instantly went to the Sequoia. It was big and rugged and the guys really wanted it as our weekend rental. But with 6 of us, we struggled to put our duffle bags in the back with all the seats ups. It was absurd really how big this thing is on the outside and how little cargo room there was on the inside. We ended up in a minivan and it was great for 3 row comfort and plenty of cargo capacity.

Amazing machine. Our old Sequoia was sold at 801k miles with the original engine / transmission/ air conditioning all working like the first day we bought it . I’m sure these won’t last as long but I’m sure you’ll still have the peace of mind if you like to road trip with the family a lot comfortably.

No reason the new one will not. It might need new turbos and hybrid battery along the way. Toyota turbos never seem to go out and the hybrid batteries seem to last forever if the fan filter is kept clean.

$75k seems very reasonable for a loaded Capstone considering a loaded Tahoe/Yukon will cost $80k to $90k and you won’t have to worry about the Tahoe/Yukon’s dismissal reliability and cheap interior. As for the Escalade comparison… I’ve driven a 2021 Escalade Platinum Sport and thought it road terrible. The seats (especially the second row) were uncomfortable, gas mileage was horrible, and the thing was in the shop more then we were driving it.

They need to be closer to the mike. The problem you are describing as muffled sound is audio reflection and some of that may be because the other two are relatively close to the glass behind them. Moving away and getting closer to the mike may help, although being too close to the mike may cause other issues.

The Capstone is like $15K less than Land Cruiser and similarly less than top trim Yukon....so what is the complaint about the price? The Capstone has LS Lexus level Semi Annilne leather which the LC never had and is superior to GM rivals. I think it is just patterned expectations here that surprises on the price, it is a good value

I log my fuel consumption using Fuelly, and did an experiment this summer using my 2020 RAV4 Hybrid. Using two tankfuls as washout before the “measurement” tankfuls I noted a small decrease in mpg between regular 87 and E15 (from 43 mpg to 39 mpg). It’s hard to tell whether that’s actually a difference, as conditions vary, but if that holds I’d consider using E15 if it were 10-*15* percent less expensive than regular, or better.

I'm very exited 2023 Toyota Sequoia for many things like having hybrid option but not having electric motors in the back, solid axles with lockers (with TRD Offroad package) along with many offroad tech with that package and you can get that package even with the 2nd trim "Limited". (Base SR5 trim only have TRD SPort package that does not have those offroad Tech.) May be important info for CR when they are buying Sequoia for testing to understand the difference between TRD Sport package vs TRD Offroad Package. I also love the JBL Audio with Toyota Price tag. Hope CR will test the Bi-LED headlights as well. Especially the highbeam that I'm not happy with. But (a big but) the way the watercooled TwinTurbo with electronic wastegate is designed is concerning to me from service stand point to reliability stand point. Again CR should pay lot of attention when buying Sequoia as driving impressions will change alot depending on the shocks they get 2.5 Fox on TRD Pro or Bilstiens with TRD OR pachage and base gets I think Tokico shocks. This small change would impact ground clearance, angles, mpg, etc.. So much more details I came across since I was interested but that Turbo make me think "naah".
@doctorres112

Are we certain the locker is part of the TRD OR package? I couldn't confirm this on the Toyota website. I'd love to know for sure as we are leaning towards the Pro model currently.

@@doctorres112 if you buy TRD Pro trim you will have all the offroad tech available in TRD OR package. If you select a lower trim like Limited you need to select the powertrain as 4x4, then in packages you will have the TRD OR package. Click "view all details" from that screen to show what you get with that package.

My Kia Soul has 312k miles and it it’s been fed exclusively E15 for the last 8000 miles. Over those miles I’ve saved well over $100 compared to regular and I’ve seen zero reduction in power or fuel economy. Those savings went a far way for me in these times and I’m yet to meet someone who’s car crapped out on them after filling with it. Recommend it every time to anyone whose car is new enough

When I was in North Carolina I bought pure (100%) gasoline. Normally I can only get the 10% ethanol. For that 1 tankful I got almost 10% better MPG. I realize 1 tankful isn’t enough to get accurate results to compare gasoline with and without ethanol. My question are: Would it be better to use pure gasoline and get better MPG or continue using the ethanol mix? And wouldn’t it be better to switch the ethanol corn fields to an edible crop?
@kamalpreetsinghgill1396
@kamalpreetsinghgill1396 Жыл бұрын
Ethanol or Gas? Its a complicated question. They are using ethanol for many reasons. 1) Mixing 10% Ethanol in Gas means 10% less gas needs to be pumped out and bought. 2) It means profits for farmers because there is actually corn surplus in USA. 3) They also think they can make the switch from gas to 100% or atleast fuel which have ethanol as majority component in the blend.

Anyone that has put ppl in the 3rd row and luggage behind them in any of the new GM trio of large suvs or a wagoner will immediately be disappointed in this new sequoia. All this extra exterior dimensions goes to no added interior volume, such a head scratcher when you have packaging benchmarks like the GM products or even mid sizers like the Telluride.

I've watched no less than 20 reviews about the new Sequoia's and only one guy mentioned the fact that not only did they switch from the V8 to the 3.5 Hybrid Engine, but more importantly they took out the center diff making these not true 4x4 for the trd pro models. I would like to know if this is true. No One talks about this. Isn't that kind of a game-changer? I'm a novice about such things but I do plan to go off-road so it seems important to know how this works.
@brianscudder2170
@brianscudder2170 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the center differential is always locked. That does not impact ability to off-road, but does impact ability to deal with mixed driving conditions - dry, wet, slippery, dry, slippery, dry, as the system relies on slippage to avoid excessive wear. Other 4WD systems allow the center differential to be locked or open, and when ‘open’ can manage changing conditions without excessive wear. Without front, rear and center locking differentials, no vehicle is truly 4x4. Few are.

I am curious. What percentage of CR readers are likely to buy such an expensive, specialized vehicle? Wouldn't it be more productive to buy models that subscribers are more likely to buy? You can buy more inexpensive vehicles to test if you forego the most expensive ones that few are likely to buy. CR used to recommend buying the least expensive product that meets a person's needs.
