Contact Explosive - Detonating Nitrogen Triiodide

Nitrogen Triiodide is an extremely sensitive explosive compound that, when dry, can be detonated by the lightest of touches or vibrations. For this reason, it should never be contained or transported and we are not aware of any industrial uses.
A quantity of NI3 was prepared in the Ri Prep Room before being laid out to dry in the famous Lecture Theatre. This process took over two hours and, due to the extreme shock-sensitivity of the material, we were only able to attempt the reaction on this scale once. The crew were forced to wear ear defenders at all times in case the material spontaneously exploded.
As Dr Peter Wothers initiates the reaction, the Nitrogen Triiodide detonates incredibly quickly in a fraction of a second to release a purple cloud of iodine vapour into the room.
Peter Wothers explains further:
"To tie in with the theme of the first Christmas Lecture (Air), I wanted to show the rapid production of a gas, but unfortunately almost all gases are colourless. The rapid production of iodine vapour from NI3 seemed like the perfect solution. The most amazing thing for me was the delay visible from the slow-mo footage before the force of the explosion really hit me in the chest!"
Devised to promote the 2012 Christmas Lectures, this is one of three large-scale, chemistry demos that were too big (or too dangerous!) to perform in the Ri Lecture Theatre in front of 400 young people.
This experiment was undertaken under the supervision of professionals and should not be replicated.

I recall as a kid making fly killers with this - mixing it with a bit of sugar, and spreading it on a little square piece of paper. When it dried, a fly attracted to the sugar would blow himself up. Much more entertaining than flyswatters.

@@WanderingDad You'd need much faster nerve conduction for that. Even in our fastest nerve cells, signals only travel at about 100 meters per second and for a response to sound, the signal has to get from the brain to the muscles of your hips at least, so we're talking about an absolute best response time of something like 10 milliseconds, which is far too slow to deal with an explosion.

The anarchist's cookbook says: _The reason for its popularity may be the ready availability of the ingredients, but it is so sensitive to friction that _*_a fly landing on it, has been known to detonate it._*_ The recipe has only been included as a warning and as a curiosity. _*_It should not be used_*_._

My chemistry teacher in the late 60s used to spread this (in tiny amounts) on the floor of the chemistry lab and let it dry for when the cleaners came in. Inspired by this, a friend who in later life was an industrial chemist put a tiny amount under his doormat for when I arrived. Unfortunately, his ancient dog went in first and had a heart attack and died when it went off. It isn't actually pure NI3 he's made, but NI3.NH3. Still works the same, though.

+King Curry I opted to be my high schools chemistry teachers assistant for two years instead of study hall. Back then we had a wonderfully well stocked lab. We used to try out all kinds of bangs. The NI3 he mixed in the video wasn't fully dry and only partially went off. I used to make batches and put little dots on blotter paper around in the window sills to kill flies with. During class one or two would explode leaving little fly parts and scaring the students. Mixing red phosphorus with potassium chlorate wetted with acetone and letting that dry worked much better for putting small blobs on the floor. We did that too on the stairs before a class change and laughed when kids would set them off. You would loose your job and go to jail now days. Sad.

A science teacher that retired at the end of my sophmore year used to mix up a batch of something similar (never found out exact compound as I was never able to.see it myself) and spread it in very small.amounts across the hallway where all of the science classes were. It apparently turned the entire hallway into a very noisy minefield that took.about two months to finally detonate all of it. My AP chemistry teacher and I were going to try to do.it again during my senior year, but we unfortunately never had the opportunity to. I really wanted to see that, too...

Even more exciting is to use a 405nm "UV" laser (which can be seen as visible blue) to set it off as the photon energy is sufficiently high to star the reaction. A red laser won't do it as the photon energy is too low.

I did the same thing in high school but sprinkled it in the halls at lunch. The fire department was called and the school evacuated and I got called to the office and was threatened to be expelled. The vice principal though it was funny and said it was what the school needed to get some school spirit going.

When I was 14 years old, we used this as a propellant. Tricky to do, but a very powerful and brisant explosive, but we got it to work. It’s about 3x more powerful than gunpowder, but about 0.2 times as powerful as RDX. Bearing in mind, I was only a school kid at the time, but we think our calculations were about right., so please don’t criticise my maths - I was only 14!

this'd be a very useful liquid to carry around and lay in lines around places as traps. Maybe there could be some chemical way to create a quicker drying solution so you could throw sealed containers of the stuff and they'd act as non igniting explosives.

NI3 as a molecule has a lot of steric strain meaning that the N-I bond is very weak with a low decomposition energy barrier (also due to the crystal structure of NI3.NH3). Also the N-I bond is very polar due to N being a lot more electronegative than I (this makes the bond even weaker and more reactive). The decomposition of NI3 --> N2 + I2 is accompanied by a huge increase in entropy due to the high stability of the reaction products (N2 and I2). This drives the reaction forward. Also the reaction is highly exothermic due to the bond energies of the products relative to the reactants. This means that when a small force is applied, the energy that is in turn supplied (use work done formula) is enough to overcome the decomposition barrier and start the reaction. The reaction is strongly driven the large increase in entropy. The reaction happens very fast and is very exothermic meaning a lot of energy is released. Then BOOM, you have your explosion :D

Just be careful not to breath in any of the purple fumes. Iodine sublimates, that is it goes from solid to gas and back to solid without a liquid phase. Breathe it in and you'll have solid iodine in your lungs. Probably not a good idea.

Just imagine if one day they find a way to make it stable to move and transport. Such a small amount can make such a fierce detonation but imagine storing it in large amounts, maybe a tonne. That would be DEVESTATING.

"Ok, something doesn't make sense to me. If iodine spontaneously reacts with ammonia to become NI3, and NI3 spontaneously decomposes to nitrogen and iodine and releases energy - and I know that nitrogen and hydrogen release energy when they are combined to form ammonia, though they need a platinum catalyst, but this makes no thermodynamic sense, for them all to happen spontaneously and release energy. What's the deal here? What are the conditions under which ammonia and iodine form NI3?" The conditions are simple. Soak iodine crystals in an ammonia solution, and then evaporate the solution. There's your NI3. Not difficult.

The energy is stored in the ammonia, The Haber process is highly endothermic, and thus absorbs energy, and it is all released when the N2 bond is made.

Thermodynamically, production of NI3 is spontaneous because the electronegative iodine will shove the hydrogen off the nitrogen in ammonia to get to the electrons -- they first attack the unshared pair of electrons that the nitrogen is sporting. The explosive potential is in the N-I bond strain. It is a pyramidal structure with N on top and the 3 iodines forming the base. But the iodines have twice the atomic radius of the nitrogen -- they are crowded and try to spread up and out. But the unshared pair of electrons on the very top of the nitrogen is repulsing the iodines with their huge electron shells. When it is in solution, the dipole moments of the water molecules will dampen that electrical repulsion, but when it dries out and the water isn't there...
