I have a sweet little purple pixie amongst some lemon lime nandinas. I’m looking for a few purple daydream loropetalum to add to the mix, but I’m having a hard time finding them in my area. Thanks so much as alway, great information. I would never have known that gravel under the container was an option. Also, as a new comer to gardening, I haven’t heard of so many plants most people take for granted that we all know. Thanks again, and please keep em coming!

Hi Jim I had a question about these. I've bought one after watching your videos and learning about them, but as far as putting it in a container will the roots get big because I have the big ones and the roots are like trunks now haa.

I was just in China and saw a number of the big ones you talked about, sculpted like large bonsai's. I have just planted a number of the ones you displayed today. None of the Southern Living varieties have a growth rate listed on the tags. Do you have any idea how long it will take after planting to get to the 4-6 feet you mentioned? I enjoy you informative videos
@JimPutnam

They are pretty fast growing actually. A foot in a year on red diamond is possible if you fertilize in the spring.

Jim, if I want to accelerate their first year growth, is it okay to fertilize it twice with Hollytone?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but do it soon so it has time to go dormant naturally in late summer.

I have a few that m trying to shape into small trees. Do you think a single trunk or multiple trunk is best? Or is it a bad idea?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 жыл бұрын
I think you can tree for one for sure. Generally they are done as standards (one trunk).

Quick question for you: maybe I missed it in the video, but how do these respond to pruning? If I wanted to keep one small-ish (around 2-3ft in a large pot), could I prune without worrying about it? Or is it sensitive? I’d love to be able to keep it small enough to be able to see the pot all the time! Found your channel recently - I live in the PNW, but we garden in similar zones (I’m 8b) so I’m learning a lot :-)

I would use purple daydream and then you wouldn't have to worry about it really. But they are all fine with being pruned hard occasionally.

Hi Jim, I planted purple pixie loropetalum in the north end of my yard last year here in Raleigh, and they just aren't doing well. They've dropped a lot of leaves and just don't seem happy. There are some blooms but only on portions of the plant. Do you have any idea what I could be doing wrong?
@morgannathan9564
@morgannathan9564 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm not Jim, but I do know that all varieties need as much sun as they can get. Yours planted in a north-facing view doesn't get enough sun.

I do have a question. How far away from the foundation should you plant something like this? I have heard you need to plant these so they are not in the drip line of your house.
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 жыл бұрын
If you think that the roof water will be hitting them, then you definitely want to slide them out a little more. 6 inches to a foot outside the drip line would be perfect.

Hi Jim, I bought 15 of the purple daydream Loropetalums and planted them in late April I’m in zone 8b and they get more than a half of days sun. Since I’ve planted them they’ve all turned solid green. Is there a way of fixing this or a reason why this has happened.
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the only time I have ever seen it is if it isn't getting enough sun. Probably just not getting enough midday sun. I'd like to give you a better answer, but I don't know of anything else that would cause it.
@dustinzigmond371
@dustinzigmond371 5 жыл бұрын
Is it possible that maybe they’re stress from the transplant. They face west so they’re getting a lot of heat after midday. I just pruned and fertilized to stimulate new grow. So I hoping that they’ll come back beautiful like they were. I’ll
