Hey yo, we're talking CoWo! Yes, the music aspect, but contemporary worship is about so much more than just what style of music is being played. Our worship practices reflect the Church's teachings, our creed, what we confess to believe. While some frame it as liturgical v. contemporary, Scripture addresses it in terms of apostolic or human traditions. We're called, not to conform to the world but to imitate the apostles. It's in this light that we consider all innovations made to the liturgy. Learn all about it in this episode of Truth at All Costs!

Theology follows form. If you borrow worship “styles” birthed in an ethos drenched in false doctrine, you import the doctrine embedded in the mode of expression produced by it.

Great video. The Divine Service is first and foremost for the believers, not for outsiders. Those that favor contemporary worship in order to try to grow the church make the big assumption that those inquiring about Christianity will be more drawn in by something that looks like the world as opposed to something sacred and set apart. Ultimately, employing contemporary music for means of "evangelism" reflects an underlying belief that we are the ones that convert people, not the Holy Spirit through God's word.

You nailed it! Ironically the CoWo advocates talk a lot about the Holy Spirit, yet fail to rely on Him.

I went to a new LCMS church in Houston because we need to attend to a Spanish service because my mami don’t know any English. When we enter the pastor stared to talk about his last night experience with “God” and what this god order to communicate to the congregation I was terrible confused but the worse came when the band started to play and the pastor joined them with a electric guitar, that turn into a rock concert which lasted for about one hour. He was dressed like an artist, people raise their hands and jump and dance happily the service show last three hours later. As a traditional Lutheran we never come back to that church 😢 they remind me as a Mexican rock band called “Mana”

As a Spanish LCMS pastor, I find myself in the minority when I try to tell all these guys to return to our confessions and they tell me that they are “not confessional”.

That’s horrendous! Do these pastors realize how their innovations deter God’s faithful?! Thank God you didn’t go back. Nothing but error going on there. Did your mami find a faithful church?

Any insight as to why? What’s in the after that’s keeping them from the confessions? Is it the influence of missional pastors in liberal districts, etc.?

Pastor Bramwell, I enjoyed your discussion very much. Our parish St. Peter Lutheran in St. Joseph MO has had several members leave over the past decade because we have rejected contemporary worship. We are finding that as we hold fast to our Lutheran doctrine the Holy Spirit is bringing in more and more members to worship with us. Thank you for such a well laid out and informative lecture, I will be following up on the suggested readings.

Praise be to God! It’s always hard to see people leave because others have created division with their man-made traditions. I’m encouraged to hear that you all have held fast to truth and are seeing the good fruit that comes from a good tree. God, please continue to glorify Your name in St. Joseph MO. Amen!

Thank you. Another home run! I want to share this with some baptists I know - while different in some big ways, they too have a history of hymnody that has been too widely substituted with "I wanna talk about me." Also, it was great hearing the voice of my friend Pr. Shamburger.

We have no contemporary services at our LCMS church, but the songs the choir sings are a little iffy in doctrine. I have been visiting an Orthodox church. It is so peaceful. I went to the Pascha liturgy, and it was so different than anything else I have been to. It started at 10 p.m. and ended at 12:20 a.m. It was followed by the blessing of the baskets and a meal. We were the first to leave at 1:20 a.m. I wish the LCMS church was more like the Orthodox church.

Pastor, good video! I would also like to comment on and maybe see you cover a video about the differences I have seen regarding holy communion during a Divine Service versus a Contemporary Service at LCMS Churches. I have been to LCMS Churches where communion is done almost the same way where the congregation stands and lines up and receives the body and blood like I have seen at non- denominational services. There is no chalice or common cup, only individual cups, and there is no reverence of leaning at the rail at the Altar.

We don’t speak the rubrics at our congregation. The practice of the church ought not be dictated by the casual bystander. We teach our people to embrace the visitors, and to be ready to help them as the service progresses through the liturgy. I don’t want to be a traffic cop.

In my experience and reading, the younger generations are not interested in mega-church, praise band, entertainment based “worship.” They want something more authentic. As you point out, it’s boomers like me who crave all the wrong stuff in the church.

Boomers, but not the ones like you. 😎 I’ve found the same thing to be true about the younger generation. They’re hungry for substance. CoWo has none.

Before converting to confessional Lutheranism, I had never experienced liturgy or liturgical worship. As an avid enjoyer of music, I never did respect or enjoy contemporary Christian worship music, whether on radio or at church... so incredibly commercialized, musically redundant and often completely plagiarizing of other commercial artists, and quite frankly, tedious and bereft of ... something. Something is fundamentally missing from it, though I'm hesitant to call it "soul", full of superficial emotives but bereft of substance or transcendent beauty. There is no way I will ever go back to that. Liturgy has completely transformed how I see and exercise worship, and there's simply no going back.

Thank you for this video. It was very insightful and giving resources for continued research. I wish we could just blame the boomers. 😆 When you talk about the USA flag being a distraction or not pointing to Christ. This is how I feel about passing the plate for offering (big boomer influence there, too). It is distracting and doesn't point towards Christ during the service.(my opinion) What are your thoughts and maybe you have insight on why this practice is good within the Divine service? Maybe to help ease my mind, at the very least.
@TyrelBramwell
@TyrelBramwell Ай бұрын
Offering in general is certainly a Christ-focused practice, as it is an expression of our thanks for the free gift of the Gospel. That’s also why the collection is located after the sermon in the liturgy. It’s a response of gratitude that represents our entire lives being the Lord’s. It also is a unifying act that confesses the communion of the saints, as we see in Acts. Whether we should pass a plate or put a box somewhere in the church is certainly a good discussion. I teach that it’s a good thing to pass the plate, in the same way that kneeling and making the sign of the cross are good. It’s a uniting of body and spirit in thanksgiving to God.
