Oh KZfaq. You fooled me. I totally thought this was going to be a satire video, but unless this creator has a very subtle, dry sense of humor, she is actually serious about this stuff... Hard to believe people like her exist, but if she's so against me calling her by her preferred pronouns, I'm happy to oblige.

As one of those faithful Lutherans sitting in the pews who remembers gasping at the story of Matt (I've only listened to the first point to now, and will continue listening), my dismay, and I think Rev. Schultz's, was not over denying communion to someone who is openly sinning, but rather that the denial didn't take place out in the narthex when they were speaking. A careful listening to Rev. Schultz's story would point out that is what was being criticized, and the comments about what he would do were to emphasize the fact that he wasn't critiquing the fact that communion was withheld. If someone from another church made it known to you that they were sinning, and you knew that they weren't able to commune, and you had cordial conversation with them ahead of the service, I think it would be embarrassing that it would be announced loudly at the altar. I am not sure this is teaching anyone at the church a "good lesson" either. As you pointed out, a orthodox LCMS church, certainly one where non members are denied communion, should already have members know why communion would be withheld, even if they didn't know this individual visitor's exact situation. I'll get back to this knowledge of closed communion point though. I don't criticize the pastor faithfully withholding communion. Matt should have known that he should be expected to (edit to correct a type*) NOT commune. The problem Rev. Schulz points out is that there was an opportunity to have a conversation that didn't happen due to the other pastor's fear, which he acknowledges. That's the part of his conscience that is challenged, not the denial of communion. I am not sure I am hearing now, and certainly didn't hear at the time, that Rev. Schultz was critiquing the withholding of communion. Many churches practice functionally open communion and I wouldn't expect a former LCMS member to not commune. I would speak to them personally, especially if I knew for a fact they were no longer LCMS. I agree, and I would even wager that Rev. Schultz would agree, it wouldn't be within orthodox practice to commune an openly homosexual person. At the very least, I don't think that was the problem he had, or anyone else in the audience had including myself. Apologies for the wordiness.
@wittig5717 сағат бұрын
I think you make a good point with setting up the faithful vs. Rev. Schultz dynamic. It's fair at the very least. It's a bit careless to pit two guys trying to be faithful against himself. I again propose the point wasn't "be like me, not these other guys." I would hope that a faithful LCMS pastor wouldn't do that either. If it was his intent, that is wrong. The point of this seminar was about reconciliation, and his place was to speak to difficult conversation and how to have them. I am not sure he was challenging the doctrine of the LCMS on homosexuality. If he was, he is wrong. I think he's presenting these pastors as examples of people who didn't know the way forward, and that these interactions are things we need to be prepared for as pastors. I would definitely take criticism that I am being a bit too kind in my interpretation as fair however.
@wittig5717 сағат бұрын
As to your point of him calling his brother a faithful Christian. I also felt uncomfortable with that wording. While I understand that some Christian name bearing churches claim scripture doesn't call homosexuality sin, I would hope that Rev. Schultz would be clear on his view of his brother sin even in the midst of a church body that doesn't name sin what it is.
@wittig5717 сағат бұрын
I also would have preferred that he not use "cisgender." But I still think that his point in the conversation is speaking with sinners with the goal of bringing them to repentance (though his relationship with his brother might be a good challenge here). Sometimes to engage the world we need to use their language without adopting their definitions. (Perhaps I'd reference Paul at Mars Hill, but that might be an inappropriate equivalence). But I think you make your point well.

I appreciate the clarification on his Intersex figures. That is unfortunately a really common issue that I've found myself falling into as well.
@wittig5717 сағат бұрын
I'm not sure that he distinctly made the point that these people would only come back to church if they were affirming. It was not distinctly opposed though. But that's not how I heard it at the time. You could very much be correct. I disagree with your point that we shouldn't care about how people are treated in church. That's as much a theological point that Walther is mentioning as the sin of homosexuality,. We can tell someone they are guilty of sin without shunning them. It's hard to call someone to repentance if we can never have a conversation with them. I know that we may not agree on this point. And I do see your point in Walther's quote. I'm not sure his point was to teach a doctrine (others definitely were). I think his point, and he distinctly says, that he is challenging how we think about one sin over another. I don't think that he needs to say that homosexuality is sinful. I'm pretty sure everyone there is aware of that already. Again I may be too soft on this point, and would take that critique fairly.

Pastor, thank you for addressing my comment from a previous episode. I changed my handle to remove the unnecessary numbers. It is further concerning (though we must not give into fear) to hear Mr . Schultz lean into his sin and announce some 30 discussions of lies that apparently our Synod, especially President Harrison has not publicly denounced this. I certainly hope President Harrison was not present at any of these discussions. Much like the Wels Pastor in this video, Coward comes to mind of the Clergy letting this go. I pray for them to be Strong and Courageous in Faith and Truth, not to fear the sword that Christ brings as you speak on in this video. Peace if possible but Truth at all costs. I didn’t want to write an overwhelming paragraph last time but find myself writing a novel this time. As I feel I haven’t honored the Fourth Commandment in my first comment. Both my Father and Mother were very concerned during my fall and especially encouraged me to come back to faith and be baptized in Christ. Since my coming to Confessional Lutheranism, My mother has also converted, thanks be to God. She does struggle a bit with the office of the keys and her opinion of lack of evangelism with her 65 years as a southern Baptist. My father, I joke is practically a Lutheran in his beliefs, as he denies the pope, purgatory among other things. However the Catholic Church has convinced him, he would be dishonoring his parents to leave to church. Thank you for your guidance, as well Courageous and Bold preaching of the Truth. I will soon be increasing my support to the channel. May God Bless you and your family.

At the 1:10ish mark he is talking about people feeling uncomfortable in their own bodies. It reminded me of your sermon on the transfiguration of Jesus. As you explained beautifully in that sermon, all sinners feel out of place in their bodies and the world, and we rightly long to be transformed. But we can do that God's way. In Romans, Paul riffs on this recognition of being out of sorts between his sin and love of the law. And lastly, the person who wrote that sign is also expressing their extreme prejudice toward what they consider evil. The very act of making a judgment shows that they are a law unyo themselves just as Paul said. Great episode, pastor! 👏

Finally someone said it right. Yes, it is a sin. There is no "hmm, well, one has to understand ... build relationships ... well it is just love and ..." It isn't complicated. Yes, these people are confused, and it is complicated to figure out how to help them. But helping them can't start with affirming their delusions about reality.

So many things I could say. I'll start with, Thank you for another on point episode. Why do I "feel" like we're watching Andy Stanley or some other contemporvant appeal-to-the-world baptiteriancostal preacher instead of a Pastor from a Confessional Lutheran synod? It is more than "not wearing Clericals;" besides my pastor sometimes wearing button-downs in his study, I honestly don't know WELS/ELS normal practice. I feel DA/SA is much safer for carry vs SAO or striker. I’m a Beretta 92 fan for several reasons, functional, reliable, straight locking block barrel vs standard browning action and esthetically pleasing. Aluminum frame also lighter than full steel, granted not as light as polymer. Beretta does also make a “PX4” with polymer frame DA/SA and has an interesting rotating barrel concept to mitigate recoil, but it’s ugly as sin haha not as ugly as Glock though 😅. God Bless
