Parasocial relationships are a very normal and common thing, happening pretty much in the moment when you become a fan of someone. The biggest difference however, that has become very prominent with streaming getting so big, is that fans are able to communicate with the persona/celebrity much more closely and frequently. There's simply something magical that clicks in your brain when that person on the screen reads out the comment you wrote and answers to it. It emulates a conversation, making these parasocial emotions much stronger.
@lucielspassword2 жыл бұрын
honestly tho, too much friends can be overwhelming, can't imagine having literally thousands of people expecting something out of me

Internet sure made some new conundrums through the wake of mass remote parasociality. My usual approach to parasociality is acknowledging the one-sidedness of of the relationship and the social and actual distances involved. As an aspie it's very good exercise for alterity since CCs are an example of (nigh-)unshakeable alterity, since one stream we could trip on the same subject/interest, but the next they'd be on a totally different trip and you may even not enjoy the content. As with all other kinds of non-hostile relationships ever, the most important lesson to take to heart is to *always imagine yourself in the other's shoes, using the "do to others what you wish others to do to you" rule.* It is very important to leash those feelings, especially when the streamer causes you to realize things about sexual or gender identity, and even a fragile broken cuddle like me can manage to set those essential boundaries between inspiration and lust, so as the illustridelicious Wigglysiah of Sensuality and Princess of the Honeybuns Rosedoodle once wrote, " *you can do it* " ! However, your feelings of friendship are valid and can be the roots of many gifts and niceties, like being friendly and supportive, clipping, being helpful in chat, or even donating, subbing and gifting subs if you feel like the streamer would spend this money better than you would (a harder mental exercise I only partook in once), and you may feel the feedback of those actions most of the time 😌.

Society doesn't respond well to new technologies. I'm 35 and the first time i had internet was at age 14. All this online stuff just stopped making any sense to me in how it permeates peoples lives to the deepest levels, i had a partner who would be a perfectly different person to me online than in real life and i just didn't know how to handle that, i feel that I'm run over by this unending march of ever newer internet nonsense that has no real life purpose. So yeah i get what Mako is saying here, or i think - friendships, relationships, what have you, is what happens face to face between people, and the constantly growing number of channels you can reach others over the internet doesn't change that. Seeing someone over a screen doesn't make you close to a person in the way seeing them in person does, and then theres the thing that if you meet a celebrity in person no you are not friends just because you know of them. But yeah got to hear Mako sing a little song, that was nice.
@makorays2 жыл бұрын
you can still certainly develop incredibly meaningful friendships with people over the internet, even if face to face is often preferred, i was only talking about the futility of streamer-viewer friendships

@@makorays Apart from therapy like i've seen you tell people on tumblr, i'd like to ask if you ever felt like this towards someone, and if you did or did not do you have any tips on how to deal with these emotions i feel towards you?
@ncrwadr Жыл бұрын
@@makorays Now that i think about it more, i think the primary reason your fans (including me ofc) want to befriend you is because you seem nice, and nice people aren't common these days i was bullied so i would know. It will take some time before i get over our parasocial relationship, but i understand that having these feelings is ok. What i learnt from them is that i probably seek your personality traits in let's say "my perfect friend". I understand that you're a human which means you aren't perfect as much as you seem like it, but hey, so am i (a fellow human person). I literally cried yesterday alone in bed after over a year and a half of not crying and repressing it all inside after a school drama i got involved in. These feelings probably emerged from my loneliness that hurt like a mother fu**er and the inability to socialize at school for various reasons. Either them being weird or me struggling with language since i'm an immigrant. What i learnt from this is that this it's probably just something i seek in a person that i lack in my life, and i was thinking of maybe finding potential friends online due to me not having any possibilities irl. If you know if there's any like Tinder for friends, where i can pick their nationalities, personalities, looks or whatever, you would've helped me a lot (it's ok if you don't know any kind of stuff like that). And who knows, perhaps one day i'll find "my own Mako Ray", didn't you and Joe find yourselves through the Internet? Anyways what do you think, do you think this is a good idea? I'd love any advice or tips from you on this. Anyways, have a fantastic femboy friday and i wish you luck.

It's valid to set boundaries between fans and content creation, but also to make sure for one's own mental health, that unless established in conversation, not to get wrapped up in slapping labels on one's self, as to not overwhelm your sense of trust in people in general, but to maintain healthy thinking for established friendships before the unexpected attention. Very often do people get wrapped up in trying to keep parasocial relations down and properly managed, but also end up evolving into business mindsets that as soon as money is introduces, even if it wasn't the goal, it'll tear friendships apart over 'who puts in the effort to make content', or 'you're too busy making content to hang out with people who don't make it, anymore.' There's a whole mess of things, but often, we do not see these events play out elsewhere in time to learn from them, before it's too late but it's important to stay humble, not just to discern proper friends from fans, but for your own mental health, as well. No one is meant to deal with people on such a large scale on a personal level, and it's great to be mindful of this, but a lot of people hurt themselves in content creation, when they isolate themselves from everyone who recognizes them. Not saying you should make friends with such people, but don't let such things blow up in your mind, that everyone is after you, or could always hurt you. Bah, long-winded explanations always seem to be a bad habit of mine, but I hope since posting this video, you've found a healthy spot of thinking for yourself, I don't like to assume things, but on the off-chance that anyone sees this and needs to hear it, as a relevant comment to the video topic, numbers don't define your value in life offline. Whether you are an extrovert or introvert, people need other people to live, even if we try to completely shut ourselves away from society and live it up in the woods or something. People left us tools/land to help us have such a life, or we get/use money to buy supplies to live off of, not everyone can do everything on their own. Point is, even alone, we rely on the effort of others/strangers to live. If you are content with those you have around you, then that's fine, but especially in the position of someone whose name is out there, how you express yourself to either a fan or just a passerby who might recognize you casually, not everyone has a sound mind or common sense to step back if you feel the need to push people away. Just be human, and take a moment for those who don't watch your content religiously or what have you, as long as it's not like a mob or anything, and just, spare a few words of thought on how they make you feel. Are they getting a little too familiar? Just tell them it makes you uncomfortable. Getting a little too close or being weird with your friends? Tell them it's not okay. Even just as simple and short an explanation as that can be enough, as yes, content creators are people, but so are those around them. Some instances of stalking and other types of general harassment is not to be excused just because someone comes off as rude or a teensy bit personal, but just showing a little courtesy in small steps at a safe distance, can prevent a lot of misunderstanding, and otherwise prevent the many disasters we hear about boundaries not being respected in a world where safety isn't guaranteed. It may come off as harsh, but the moment you put a piece of yourself out there for anyone to see of your own free will, even if you do it to make a living, you are a person, and also a persona. You are entitled to live your life out as a person as you see fit, but the persona will always follow you around if you wear it. Be human, be respectful to one another, respect boundaries, but remember to treat others how you want to be treated.

I am very amused by some of the people actually offended from this. I think I’ve literally only watched a couple of your videos and then left it at that. Good content, but I’m not about to slide into your dms trying to be that one special guy out of tens of thousands of subscribers. KZfaq and Twitch are not platforms for making friends. If you are actually watching a KZfaqr’s content and going “yeah, I’m gonna hit them up, I’m somehow gonna be the one to magically become their friend,” then you’re on KZfaq for the wrong reasons. Get a grip, and just stick to watching things. Supporting is fine, but don’t go beyond that.
