I thought the anchors are designed specifically for the ground they are used on. Like with smaller river boats, that flat anchor is perfect for muddy grounds, whilst that old anchors from big sailing ships are good at a mixture of soft sand and rocks, and the X-shaped anchor was mainly used for stone ground.

Totally incorrect The anchor is not a weight. The surface area that inbeds beneath the seabed is the critical factor. Weight does help. The shape of the anchor it most important. And the ratio of rode to water depth. Look up Fortess anchor, and Danforth anchor Bob Ogg.

I watched a documentary on anchors and I was surprised to hear that the weight of the chain is what keeps the boat anchored. Edit: I should clarify that the doc was about very large vessels that utilise heavy chains. I'm sure a rope and anchor on a small vessel would absolutely utilise the 'grab' of the anchor on the seabed.

@@pine6163 I personally use rope with my anchor as well. But I have a fishing boat. The above comments were geared towards vessels such as air craft carriers and oil tankers, freight shippers, vessels in the thousands of tons range. I navigate a bass boat, humbly anchored by a rope and steel anchor. Almost never, because I’m always trolling the banks fishing. But please understand. My argument was meant specifically for large ships. There’s a whole science to them and I salute those experienced engineers and captains who navigate these large vessels through seemingly impossible waters.

In sweden we call them "draggar" because they drag on the bottom. Not anchors per say. Yes the boat is moving slowly with the currents. As long they don't snag on something heavy on the bottom. But most times fishing on sandbars you want the boat to drift slowly with the currents.

1st anchor is for muddy grounds 2nd and 3rd are used on stoney grounds Anyhow it's the chain that keeps you in place. The anchor basically just prevents the chain from moving on the ground.

For large ships most of the drag is from the anchor chain laying on the sea bed.

I've never seen anchor mechanics in action before. Never understood why they were shaped the way they were, which is why that last one was a neat surprise.

They do work.. the sand at the bottom is wet and thick + full of vegetation for the anchor to hold onto..

It’s crazy to think that ships and boats don’t have breaks just gotta trust your anchor will catch something strong enough to hold

Everyone’s saying stuff about anchors so I’ll pipe in: anchors are meant to simply guide the chain, shaped like that to direct the water away so the chain moves as little as possible while falling so the ship itself doesn’t move. The chain is there to keep the ship in place.

It’s alright the anchor digging in, but you gotta pull it up afterwards. No problem on a huge ship.
