Here is an overview of Contest Fiddling in America, with a particular focus on Texas style. I trace the history of fiddle contests from as far back as the 18th Century. The peak of contest fiddling was arguably in 1912 where a Georgia contest drew 6,000 people. Influential characters in early 20thC contests included Gid Tanner, Lowe Stokes and Clayton McMichen. I mention the 1924 International contest in Maine which attracted, among many others, James Scott Skinner from Scotland. Industrialist Henry Ford sponsored contests at his car dealerships. Galax and Weiser have become the most important annual contests.
I look at the effect of contests on regional style, and show how the Texas style has come to dominate, partly due to the influence of players such as Benny Thomasson and his protege Mark O'Connor. I trace the history of Texas fiddling, look at some of its defining characteristics and at some examples of the standard repertoire.
