Here is an overview of Contest Fiddling in America, with a particular focus on Texas style. I trace the history of fiddle contests from as far back as the 18th Century. The peak of contest fiddling was arguably in 1912 where a Georgia contest drew 6,000 people. Influential characters in early 20thC contests included Gid Tanner, Lowe Stokes and Clayton McMichen. I mention the 1924 International contest in Maine which attracted, among many others, James Scott Skinner from Scotland. Industrialist Henry Ford sponsored contests at his car dealerships. Galax and Weiser have become the most important annual contests.
I look at the effect of contests on regional style, and show how the Texas style has come to dominate, partly due to the influence of players such as Benny Thomasson and his protege Mark O'Connor. I trace the history of Texas fiddling, look at some of its defining characteristics and at some examples of the standard repertoire.

Hi Chris, as a new member of your family I really enjoyed that video. Being a late addition to the fiddling community- I spent most of my adult life as a Scruggs style banjoist- I often wondered about the Texas vs Contest fiddling relationship. There’s a book you may enjoy called “ The Fiddle Book” by Marion Thede. She was a classically trained violinist who wound up being a music teacher in rural Oklahoma (which borders Texas) in the 1920s thru 40s. She began recording and transcribing local fiddlers. Before each chapter of tunes, she writes very insightful observations about the people and culture of the time.

Excellent piece Chris! I especially like the highlight on Texas fiddling and the first image you show of the Quebe Sisters. I saw them live several years ago in Oklahoma City and they blew me away!

Great documentary! Being a Texas fiddler it was exciting to see photos and hear names of people I'm familiar with. Mark OConner is king around here. I've been told by friends that you can walk around Wieser and find a jam circle of just about any genre there is. You should go sometime! I look forward to attending in hopefully the next 2 or 3 years.

BTW, the Gimbles are fiddle and contest royalty too. Playing with a guitar backup using all those walking chords is amazing.

@@TheFiddleChannel The contest is cool, but it's not really the reason to go. For 10 days or so, Weiser is the center of the universe for swing, old time and other acoustic music.

Wonderful doco Chris. Could you please provide the source for each of the tunes playing behind your commentary? Those versions are just outstanding examples of the genre. Please keep up the very good work you are doing.

Hi Tom. You flatter me! They're all my playing; Tom and Jerry, Roxanna Waltz, and Wild Fiddlers Rag are from my solo album (Off the Wall), available on Spotify and Itunes. Beaumont Rag, and Jesse Polka are from the audio of my book "Exploring Country and Bluegrass Fiddle".

I have been listening to and playing those tunes for many years, at Weiser too. Your versions are free of the tension and over ornamentation that is often found in contest playing. Very tasteful, great timing and touch.I'm very impressed.@@TheFiddleChannel
