Contextualizing wrist grabs... Techniques done from wrist grabs are frequently criticized as being overly static and unrealistic. There is an unstated (and inaccurate) assumption in this critique. Namely, that these grabs always occur as the beginning of the confrontation (they sometimes do, albeit more rarely). More often than not, such grabs happen within a broader melee. It is useful to practice such techniques statically at first (as this facilitates learning the technique well). This method can be seen in the first portion of this video. That said, it is extremely important to understand (and train for) the reality that such grabs more often happen in an exchange of techniques. This can be seen the latter portion of this video.

What would make this video better? You dropping a microphone at the end. :) In 30 seconds you've made a simple, yet hugely important connection that for some reason a lot of folks can't seem to come to on their own.

I think that there has been an over-emphasis of wrist grabs in martial arts: namely in many Aikido and Jujitsu styles. I think this is because it's just a wrist grab and nothing else. People have 1000 responses to a wrist grab but not to more common practical grabs such as a lapel grab, or lapel and punch combination or a higher on the arm grab. However, an attacker grabbing your hand as a way to get past your guard is very common, or an attacker striking who is thwarted and then decides to grab your arms is very common. As you do it here it's strikes that the opponent opposes with grabbing which you then turn into a wristlock. Way more effective and common than just "Someone grabs your wrist and does nothing else." which is what many styles do. I would also try the same wrist grabs higher up on your arms so that one can defend from arm grabs not specifically and exactly on the wrist.
