Continuing To Restore A Barn Stored Mk4 R32 Golf [ Part 2 ]

In part 2 of this multi part series we are continuing to restore a barn stored Mk4 R32 Golf. This time we give the paintwork a good clay barring, then used a one step polish to try and restore the paintwork to it's former glory.
As you can see, the finished result of the polishing is nowhere near perfect, however all we wanted to achieve was to be able to see the true condition of the paintwork so a decision on it's future can be made. Once the paintwork was polished we decided to give it a coat of hard wax and ceramic spray wax to add some gloss (For our own satisfaction) and to add some protection. Keep your eyes peeled for Part 3 when we jump in a little deeper with this project.

For glue and license plate crap sticking to your paint, get as much off as possible and then use 'Goo-Gone'. It's absolutely great, takes it off quick, and WILL NOT damage your paint if you do not leave it on there for a really long period of time... washes right off after using. It saves a huge amount of time for things such as that. Not trying to tell you what to do... you do wonderful work. Just trying to save you some time and save your arms/hands from undue stress! Nice detail work!

Wheels need spacing and smaller tyres. Tap front pinch welds and remove arch liners should get the front down a little more 🤣 . We all need to make sure Glenn doesn’t go through with his bonnet extender idea!

Finally! A detailer other than #AmmoNYC that uses clay on the windows! I've been doing it for years and no one agrees its worth it.

Always clay windows for sure. If there is a load of stubborn soiling we will reach for the 0000 grade wire wool but clay usually does the trick 👊

@@TheDetailHunters Agreed. I use clay on the glass to clear stubborn stuff and then use a steamer. It works so well, as long as it is not cold outside (ask me how I know) and steel wool or razor blades. I've just met tons of detailers that never use clay on windows. It's weird.

Why wouldn't you use clay bar on windows. Makes sense to me. If it's good enough to clean paint without damaging it, why not do the same on glass. My Audi TT back window, it's such a shallow angle that stuff had obviously stuck to it over the years. When it was a mixture of wet and dusty, it would look like the crust of Tiger bread! Even when clean, you could feel the sap and other deposits on it. First thing I did was clay bar it to remove the crud. Job done!

Paints pretty bad on this one, will require quite a bit of paint to get it nice. We just give it a quick AIO to see what might be able to be saved before it goes through the bodyshop.

Ohh what a great news, thats how you gain a subscribe from me. I live in Croatia, country where everyone is poor but You can find a ton of expensive new cars and nowere to find a normal R32 lol. If I want an R32 only way is Germany and pay it a lot plus taxes...a long story.

Personally think you applied the wax to the paint way too thick hence why you were having to apply a lot of pressure with the cloth to remove it. Wax should always be applied as thin as possible to aid application and removal. It's a microscopic layer that is then left on the paint to protect it and applying way too much is simply a waste. Nevertheless a decent little series.

Why don't you clay the car whilst it's wet with rince water, saves time and you'll end up using about half the amount of clay lube??

In part 1 we washed the car so we could see it.. in part 2 wee polished the paint to see what could be saved, part 3 we cleaned the engine bay, part 4 we cleaned the interior. Plenty more episodes to come, of which many will include aspects of a light restoration.
