I'm a novice staff spinner but for some reason I learned the Steve first. Grateful for that, it makes me look better than I am.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting these very informative tutorials on steves and variations. I nailed down a steve today thanks to your help. Also you helped me understand how to control the staff, from watching your flow and how you teach yourself movements. Thumbs Up Man, Please post more videos.

I've been doing contact staff since 06-07 something, but haven't really focused so much on the small variations you can do with these simpler moves untill now. This video really helped me to continue in the new direction I've been taking in my training lately. Thanks!

Hmmm. the tip i'd give. the faster the velocity of the staff, the more vertical you need the ''receiving arm'' to alter it's speed. I really nailed this trick, contiguously, after a mate's kids soaked me with mater bombs at a festival I was performing at. Was using a 'fibre 3' staff by Firetoys.com at the time with a silicone grip so with water it became incredibly slick , but if you can control a wet silicone grip in a trick you sure as hell can do it 'dry', just drill, drill, drill. Best of luck my spinning brothers ans sisters!

Thanks! Well, emphasis on particular balance, weight(mass), counter-weight(mass), extra pliable grip, and a perfectly smooth roll are characteristics of a quality contact staff. Standard/basic staves, or poorly designed contact staves, lack many of those features.

I just renewed a listing for my "padawan" practice staff, it had slipped off of my radar. Now listed on our shop, check the about description for a link to the etsy store!

Great tutorial! You explain things very clearly :D. I was just wondering what the difference between a normal staff and a contact staff is. Thanks! :)

I feel like the fingers inner lace push up at (4:52) would be a great place to combine a toss like at (14:54) :)

Too bad there isn't more of this done with swords. I mean, I know contact swords operate identically save for the asymetry allowing you to make some strange movements that would normally be stopped by the other side of the staff... But I'd still like to SEE it. X3 Still, very nice video. well explained, and I'll make sure to keep this for later.

I have a question: I put my arm and staff in the same position while trying to let it roll down and it doesn't go around my neck, it just falls off my shoulders. What am I doing wrong? Whenever I try to mimic you it just does the same thing over and over

Sounds as if you simply expect the staff to do what you imagine it should do, rather than involving your posture, movement and body placement to guide the staff. It will not just do the move on it's own, much like hooping, you must move just as much as the staff does. Contact staff is more body flexibility and contortion than simple prop manipulation. Hope that helps. Don't give up!
