Heck yeah, here's the Hive Fleet I've been waiting to see! That wash of Cygor Brown over the red carapace looked absolutely brilliant. Really darkened down the red without overpowering it. Fun story: I started playing Tyranids back in late 3rd edition when Kraken was the poster boy hive fleet. I loved the look, but for some reason just assumed it was out of my league as a painter. Now 20 years later I'm super excited to be jumping back into Tyranids and I'll absolutely be painting them up Kraken!

Kraken was the first hive fleet I painted I remember getting the white dwarf issue with nids on the cover around 2004...ish?

Sounds about right, I bought my first 40k box (A Tyranid battleforce with 3 warriors and a smattering of gaunts... maybe some genestealers?) back in late 2002 or early 2003. 4th edition launched sometime in 2004 I believe, and we didn't see Hive Fleet Leviathan until the 4th edition Tyranid Codex if I remember right. Still have my 3rd edition Tyranid codex around. The artwork and army photos in that book are super nostalgic for me. Pretty crazy to think we're just now getting new Termagaunts to replace the ones I built 20 years ago. :P

I plan on making my own hive fleet based off wasps soon...Trying to decide if Imperial fist yellow, sigbald burgandy on the expodes fleshy bits, and black legion on the carapace? Im not entirely sure how ima go about it lol glad to see youre doing a tyranid series though going to help a lot to get some ideas..

What would you recommend to use as a highlight color for the yellow parts for the larger models like leapers and screamer killer?

I’d probably go for something like Flash Gitz Yellow for a subtle highlight or Phalanx Yellow if I wanted it to be a touch more stark. Spot highlights, if you’re into that could be Dorn Yellow or Screaming Skull.
