I’m not a photographer (not a good one, anyway), but one thing I notice is KZfaqrs, writers, etc., put such an emphasis on fast lenses, that hobbyists start to believe that anything less than 1.4 or 1.8 is unacceptable. It’s nice to be able to use a wide aperture if you really need it, but that doesn’t make it right all the time.

Exactly this! It’s nice to have fast aperture lenses if you need it, but just because you have a fast aperture lens doesn’t mean you need to use it all the time.
