'Here We Go' . . . now I need to re-learn how to best shoot my longbows. As an almost 69 years old traditional bow guy, I resist learning new things, but this podcast has ignited a new spark in me to become a more controlled shooter. Thanks Brian and Joel . . . I think!?!?!?!

The beauty of my longbow is the absence of a pin a release an added weight. You have to watch the spot. And talk through the decisions but the most important part of my shot is to becom detached from all but pull pull pull ontill the string is loose. I like th compare the instinctive shot to performing a magic trick.

Great podcast brother !!! Im struggling with punching the trigger of my Stan Onnex thumb . I usually fire within 3 seconds every time and I don't know how to change my mindset to correct it. I've used a hinge for the past two years and had decent success with it but at the end I was punching the hinge as well , completely manipulating each shot. Do you have any ideas on anything I can do to change this ugly affliction of archery ? I know you are extremely busy with your videos so even the smallest tip might help me change the way I approach firing my release . I'm a target archer . Again , thank you for the killer videos and keep them coming Brian !!!

One thing is blank bale shooting. Go 5 yards from a chest high and above target because you don't want to create a bad habit of hinging at the shoulders and not the waste, and shoot with your eyes closed focusing on just moving the thumb button slowly and getting a surprise break every time. Focusing on a target is what is causing the panic to punch. Taking Joels course is another option and it won't disappoint I promise.

I am having a hard time grasping the lighter bow that moves around concept. If that truly is more accurate then why don't the pros use it? I understand most hunters like light bows (that is because they are easier to handle though), so is his advice based on the premise that hunters won't carry a heavier bow? Great episode by the way!

Hey Adam! Most guys who hold and punch the trigger prefer a very heavy, slow moving bow because they're trying to time the trigger punch with their target alignment. A really heavy bow is slow to move off of target (which is helpful) but when the pin comes off of of target, the bow is equally slow to move back onto target. So if you're trying to time a trigger punch with target alignment it's much easier to accomplish with a really heavy bow. But if your goal is to achieve a surprise release you do not want a super heavy bow setup because you want the bow to be able to quickly correct and get back on target faster than your conscious mind can track it. As soon as my pin drifts off target it's instantly coming back on target before my conscious mind even know what happened. When my shot breaks, my pin is either on target or barely off target or on it's way back to target--heavy bow rigs slow this process down. With a heavy rig, when my shot breaks when the pin is off target the bow is so heavy and slow that it's not getting back on target instantaneously and is therefore shooting wide. Too light can be a problem as well--you need some weight to help you be steady, but not much. I use stabilizers to balance my bow; but I don't use stabilizers to make my overall setup heavy and slow. I hope this helps. I'll continue this discussion on some upcoming podcast episodes.

@@GrittyGearAndPodcast Thanks for the thorough reply. If I understand correctly (I promise I am not trying to straw man) but I see a bit of inconsistency *if* we are assuming the pros are at the pinnacle of accuracy. Or would the pros be better with his method and lighter setup? His method is most accurate for someone shooting a hunting weight bow, I don't see an issue there. However, if someone is willing to carry a heavy setup would they then shoot by punching the trigger since that is what is needed with a heavy bow? Is that what the pros do? I don't believe it is.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. As we discussed at the very beginning of this episode, some people are quite capable of shooting by punching the trigger; in fact, some very famous archery champions are notorious trigger punchers. Tim "The Hammer" Gillingham is a prime example of a very high-level shooter who punches the trigger. But on the other hand, some of the best shooters in the world (like Levi Morgan) do not punch the trigger but instead shoot a controlled shot as described by Joel Turner in this video. In my opinion, the method Joel describes is far superior to the trigger punching process. But as Joel said, some dudes have extremely calm personalities and are able (most of the time) to override the precognition inputs upon shot execution--but most people are not able to do that. With trigger punching, the results are usually more erratic--the shooter is either shooting perfect bulls eyes or missing by a huge margin--there's no middle-ground. With a controlled shooter (like Levi Morgan or Joel's son Bodie Turner, who just won Vegas), the results are far less erratic--when they miss, they miss small. Trigger punchers are either on or they're not and their shot process can often lead to "target panic" and cause years of struggle to overcome it. You just gotta decide which method you want to develop. I think Joel's method leads to a better, more consistent shooter in the long run without the risks of developing target panic and other terrible habits along the way.

@@Adam_Bileckyj why are you assuming that pro archers are better than good hunters? They're hunters. If they don't tell you their hunting spots, why would they teach you how to shoot the bow? Probably the best archers are guys who we don't really hear about. Not to say there isn't valuable advice from.podcasts, but you gotta do what works for you.

@@sasquatchrosefarts Pro archers are competitive and at the pinnacle of repeatable accuracy as that is the only thing that matters. If the setup described here was more accurate they would use that in tournaments and win. You would see every guy shooting that way. There is a reason why you dont.
