The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway - - La'al Ratty - - from a slightly different perspective - - one of the many facets that the general public don't see.
I was here filming and travelling last week and was kindly invited to see and film something of the actual controlling of the trains. It provided me with a couple of fascinating hours and gave me a much greater insight into how much goes on behind the scenes as we chug merrily up and down the valley.
My thanks to Ryan for allowing me access to the signalbox and for his knowledgeable and lucid explanations.
Enjoy.

Thanks UKTV - wait for the long summer days and, hopefully, an end to the present Covid restrictions. You'll love it.

Interesting video, great to see the behind the scenes, saw the flying Scotsman today at Carlisle going from the east Lancashire railway to Joppa straight in Scotland.

Lucky you. I had no idea it was passing through but, since I was at an afternoon concert in Glasgow I couldn't have been there to film it. I'll watch your video instead!

@@schoolshorts Thanks, it was an amazing coincidence we went to Carlisle early at around 8 in the morning and I looked on RTT as we were planning to spend the day at Carlisle station I saw a train from east lancs railway and it said empty coaching stock. However word quickly got out it was the flying Scotsman and I saw a few videos of it at other stations before carlisle. However i wouldn’t have know either if I wasn’t going to carlisle station that day anyway.

@@schoolshorts Just so you know, I am pretty sure it is returning to the east Lancashire railway tomorrow and will go though carlisle at 16:11 and leave at 16:50.

It was a very interesting day - the average passenger probably has little idea of how carefully his safety is monitored.

Excellent Tim. You got some great video of something not many get to see. It looks all mechanically locked as I did not see any red lights on the track diagram.

I wondering if Ryan is a driver as well as being a signalman. He looks like the calm, cool driver from other videos. Many thanks.

He has taken over as regular driver of River Esk which used to be Peter van Zeller's locomotive. Cool, calm - that's the impression I got in the signalbox - I'm sure he'll be glad to read that you think so!

So why do they use the rag when touching the handles in the switch room? Perhaps for sanitary reasons but wouldnt make more sense to use gloves like white gloves?
@schoolshorts
@schoolshorts Жыл бұрын
I presume from your use of the term "switch room" that you are American - in the U.K. we would call it the signal box. Traditionally, signalmen were very proud of their work places and carefully kept them spick and span. The cloth was not used for hygiene purposes but to prevent the metal levers from being discoloured by the sweat from human hands. The practice was widespread - even universal.

Have been able to find anything about the ratty arms? I’ve had a few fine meals and real ales in there… all before covid though.

It's owned by the company who own the railway and I'm assured that it will be re-opening - but no-one seems to know when. I used it frequently - the food and beer were excellent, and both staff and locals friendly. I miss it.

How many trains can run at once with the radio system and passing loops?
@schoolshorts
@schoolshorts Жыл бұрын
Only two trains were running on the day that I filmed but I believe that even the fullest summer timetable can be handled by three. This is not a question I asked Ryan but, thinking about it, two trains could be in each terminal and one (or possibly even two) at Irton Road, leaving the intermediate sections free for occupation. Perhaps somebody from Ratty will read your question and offer a definitive reply.

High season service is 4 trains in operation. In theory you could run a 6-train 20-minute interval service, but timekeeping would have to be perfect or the timetable would fall apart as every delay would be transmitted to all the trains waiting for you to pass, and in turn their delay will be transmitted .... You get the problem! (R&ER volunteer)
