Conure gender, is your conure a boy or girl?
Telling a conure's gender is notoriously difficult. Many of the tells other parrot species have, conures simply don't.
So in this video I look at the myths, the behavioural signs and finally the only sure fire way to identify a conure's gender.
If you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comments as I’d love to chat to you.
Apologies for the excitement in the intro, I filmed this early on a sunny morning with birdies outside!

The topic of pelvic exam has been coming up more and more recently on here so I wanted to put a pinned comment about it up! There is evidence to suggest you can ascertain the gender of a conure by the shape of their pelvic bones. This method is often used by more experienced breeders on young conures. Some vets have also been known to use this method. Why was it not included in this video? 1. Its not 100% accurate. 2. For someone who doesn't know what they are doing it presents a possible risk to your bird if done incorrectly. 3. In sexually mature birds it can cause hormonal behaviour. 4. It often breaks trust with the owner, especially if done forcefully. Hopefully this clears things up a little!

Love your channel, and please keep the videos coming. I have two Green Cheek Conures. I know they are male and female because of certain "the birds and the bees" behavior. :) I have to say though, my male likes to dance with a head bob to music, as does my female conure. And, although she does not do so as often as my male, my female will do the posturing stance - standing straight up, crown feathers back, with a kind of strutting back and forth. I just discovered your channel, so if you have discussed this before, please forgive this request. But I was wondering if you could talk about caging conures together. Earlier this year, I had to separate my two conures into separate cages due to fighting. I found them locked in the talon death grip and biting each other. Up to that point, they got along wonderfully in the same cage. And they played and cuddled both inside and outside their cage. I have had Dunny, male, and Itsy since juveniles. Dunny is 5 and Itsy is 4. I didn't cage them together the first month or so until was sure that they got along. They seemed like the perfect couple. They now spend their "out of cage" time separately as well. I would love to eventually get them out together. Thanks for any advice. -Jim

Hey Jim, Thank you! Regarding the bonding/caging two birds together I do have videos on those topics! The examples used are our rescue conures too! The fact they got on well in the past and did so for an extended period is positive though, it means they likely can again if you discover what the cause of the fighting was (usually hormones in many cases!) If you REALLY struggle and the videos don't help me and my fiancé also run a parrot behaviour consultation business you could reach out to for a dedicated consultation.

I had Sky tested shortly after I bought her almost 4 years ago. As I suspected, she was a female. She learned to talk early in her life. Phrases like "pretty bird", "pretty, pretty", "what are you doing?", and my favorite, "I love you". Curiously, she has not uttered a new phrase in the last 2-3 years.

Am I wrong that most birds learn almost all of their words or phrases in their first few years, not later? My older rescue parrotlet came to me with a few phrases and doesn’t seem to be learning anything new. He mimics sounds, but no new words. But our baby budgie was very wide eyed and learning new things, including picking up on the words he learned from the parrotlet, in his first year. And is slowing down on learning language also.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
That's really cute and smart of her! It's a bit like humans in some ways. They are more receptive when younger/learn quicker! BUT, (BIG BUT) there is nothing stopping them learning things later on. Depending on the species/individual they can learn new things including speech well into old age.
@dorkusamericanus
@dorkusamericanus 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheParrotTeacher I’ve noticed that my parrotlet talks (well, more like mutters angrily) more when he’s stressed out or upset. And I’ve heard a few other people say that their birds tended to use language to express more negative emotions than positive ones. That’s just my bird, other birds, of course, might be more chatty when happy or excited. My budgie uses mimicry when he’s more hormonal and so isn’t particularly being nice either, so for me I’m actually ok with not hearing them speak words as I’m now starting to associate them speaking words with them being upset or in bad moods. So while I love to hear them make kissing sounds back to me and such, I don’t necessarily think it means they’re showing affection, but that they’re mimicking what they’re hearing me and my husband do over and over again. My parrotlet must have heard “Mind the gap” yelled at him angrily for some reason, because he mutters it whenever he’s upset. I used to think it was cute. Now I find it sad 😢 Again, that’s just my experience with my birds, other peoples birds probably are totally different.

The simplest method to determine the gender of a parrot of any species is physical examination of the vent area (what one breeder I know calls “the underfluffies”) - but this method can be potentially traumatic for an adult bird (babies and juveniles are somewhat more tolerant) and also requires some basic knowledge of avian anatomy. Any physical contact with an adult bird around the vent and tail etc can also have unwanted arousal and hormonal effects etc so it’s best to get a specialist avian vet to show you before attempting it yourself.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 5 ай бұрын
You are totally correct! The reasons you listed are also why I don’t mention it as a viable option. Many vets aren’t avian specialists or qualified so can’t do it. I wouldn’t trust a person to know what to do safely either!

We looked all over the place, then found her chilling out under a bush. Several Months later, I went off to work & came back to find no cat around!! I was sure no windows open before I left for work. Then I heard a feint meow & I thought, No! no, she can't have got out again & how! So I listened out for more feint meows, until I finally found her, under the kitchen sink cupboard! Where she'd obviously snuck in & spent the past 6 hours!! I felt terrible, but she was fine. She was 6 months old then & I had her a month short of what would have been her 21st birthday - so no real harm done!! I do recommend someone checking cupboards though, in case a little person disappears into them! Or in your case the bins!! Xx

also, instead of harassing your bird and yanking out a feather, most (if not all) DNA services work just fine with a molted feather as well. if you have multiple birds, it's just a matter of keeping track of which bird it came from.. which can be more or less difficult depending on your types of birds xD Olive would be pretty easy to tell apart from Pickles, but perhaps not as easy to tell from Scampi, etc... or if you have a Blue & Gold Macaw and an Umbrella Cockatoo... should be pretty easy xD
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
You certainly can do. It's also one of the reasons we haven't done so for our conures, we don't feel the need to subject them to any pain for no reason. However be aware that not all places can reliably offer that service due to the need for fresh dna on the end of the feather. I also know of a couple of scam places that claim to, but they literally just take money then give false data.

Someone told me to hold bird on its back, like it's laying to sleep. Then to gently feel with your finger between its legs where the two bones are. Not sure what you call those, but it forms the channel for its genetal area? If the space between these two bones are wide, it's female to allow an egg to pass. If the space is narrow, like less than your little finger width, it's a male. Pls understand there is no protruding in this test, you simply lay your finger parallel to his pelvis area and you will feel the - let's call it - pelvis bones. Hope this makes sense?
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Barend, There is certainly some evidence to say you can tell from feeling the area around the pelvis. I know some breeders use this method for v.small parrots of various species. HOWEVER it's best done when they are little and I would never advise a pet owner to do so. There's risk of injury, many people won't know what their looking for, most parrots won't tolerate it and if they do it can lead to some major mixed messages.

Aside from the obvious egg laying stuff! The biggest differences tend to be in behaviour. Males tend to be a little more cheeky whereas females more cuddly. But this tends to be dependant on individual personalities too!

Hey there, Foot tapping can be related to excitement or territorial behaviour in male cockatiels. But I honestly haven't seen or heard much about it in relation to genders in conures.

Hey Idaliz, That'd depend where in the world you are! Also taking blood from a parrot should always be approached with extreme caution and is usually best done by a vet.

To know what a female conure is they usually have pink claws whereas males have more of a greyish claws. Females have a lighter silvery grey around their head whereas a male usually has a darker grey around his head. Females usually attach themselves more to a male owner in the house whereas males are usually attracted to the female owner in the house. The females are usually a little bit more quieter if you pay alot of attention to it whereas the males are more out there with constant chirping and noise.
@TheParrotTeacher

Hey Rhiannon, Sadly many of the methods mentioned there are anecdotal at best and proven to be inaccurate. It's very difficult to tell via appearance and behaviour and a DNA test is the only sure fire way of knowing.
