0:56 it is crazy though how even though wings were developed independently in each of those animals, the bird and the bat both share a common ancestor in the reptile lineage before they split off into dinosaurs and early mammals respectively

I've watched this video and the homologous structure one on your channel so far and they have helped me soo much!! You deserve way more views, but I think the thumbnails aren't captivating enough hence why you aren't getting as many views as you should be!! Hope this helps! Love your videos!

Great video!! I am still kind of confused with determining whether a characteristic is analogous or homologous using a phylogenic tree, would you be able to show that?

If you haven't already, you should check out my video on homologous vs analogous structures. I will make a video regarding photogenic trees at some point, but to answer your question, it all depends on whether or not they had a common ancestor with that characteristic that passed it on to them. For example, if you go back far enough, birds and bats share a common ancestor in a photogenic tree, however, that ancestor did not have wings or flight and thus, birds and bats ability to fly is an analogous evolution. However, the mouse and the crocodile's four legs are an analogous characteristic because they share a common ancestor with four legs. Does that help?

Hey Emily. I am currently making a video on this topic thanks to your recommendation. It should be uploaded this week. As a short answer, parallel evolution occurs when two species that share a common ancestor develop very similar traits separate from one another. So basically, they were similar before, became separated, yet still evolved similar traits.

Hi! You're videos are so helpful! My only question is, how does convergent and divergent evolution relate to anagenesis and cladogensis. (If they relate at all) Thanks in advance!

They occur simultaneously, but explain different phenomena. Anagenesis is evolution within a lineage without any branching occurring whereas cladogenesis is evolution that results in the branching of a lineage. Divergent evolution usually results in cladogenesis. I hope that helps. Maybe I'll make a video on anagenesis vs cladogenesis.

It would be possible to map mathematical descriptors that would show what adaptations would be optimal in given environments. So a swimming would for instance have fins of a given camber, or a bipedal walker would have optimal pelvis or backbone shapes and so on, subject to precise mathematical definition of the narrow functional ranges. Presumably, that would apply universally, irrespective of continent, or of planet or galaxy for that matter.
