Q&A with Rooney Mara of CAROL. Moderated by Joe McGovern, Entertainment Weekly.
In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt, Carol follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) come to light. Carol is directed by Todd Haynes and written by Phyllis Nagy with moving performances from Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Cory Michael Smith.

The way she talks is gentle and lovely, meanwhile she is honest and straight-forward, also the contents she said show that she is a deep thinker. Awww she is so wonderful.

I'm really impressed by this interviewer's ability to bring her out of her normally so quiet interviewing ways. Looking at some of Roony's other interviews, I am used to her being uncomfortable, quiet, not letting out an enormous amount but there was always so much more going on underneath what she was letting on. It's incredible to see her finally feel comfortable enough to express it, and man does she have some amazing things to say.

She seems very self-aware. And she has this really coy facial expression with a big smile every time she said something naughty or funny.😉 It's a really nice one-on-one interview, she's very candid and frank, adorable as usual!

She is such a poised young lady. It is quite refreshing to have a quiet, somewhat reserved actress in this day and age. She gave a breathtaking performance in this film, one which I have watched several times in an attempt to catch the nuances in her facial expressions alone. I agree with Joe in that this was one of the best endings in cinema history. I cannot remember a time when I have been so overcome with emotion over two characters in the final two minutes of a film. I wish her the best during the rest of the awards season and hope she gets (finally) some true recognition from her peers for the work she did on "Carol."

+MsPark Good point. However, Cannes awards are limited to films in competition at that one event. There were 19 feature films in competition for prizes in 2015. There are hundreds of films for awards-season consideration by the end of one year. I'm sure it is an honor just to be nominated. My point is that a more significant accolade would be for her to receive an award based on a nomination from a pool of all films. It's only an opinion. I'm sure that the argument could be made that five other actresses are just as deserving of a Best Supporting Actress nomination. There were some great ones this year.

This is one of the best interviews of Rooney that I've seen. It's like they're just two friends who are talking to each other, making the flow of conversation more natural. Kudos to Joe McGovern! :)

Adorably funny Rooney-unexpected trait because she usually is percieved as awkward around Q&As,red carpets and in any large crowds. In intimate groups such as these she shows off this solid, bad ass, fearless and honest self (11:36) that just reflects her intelligence and principles in life. She also has this shy (cant say jerk off in a normal voice)and lovely side.I am so happy for her Cannes Best Actres Award (truly deserved). The French saw someting magnificent even Cate and Todd keeps repeating these qualities about Rooney in their interviews. Its hard being the quiet one and Cannes proved that right. Its innate to show her feelings easily-explains the endless smiling when speaking about Cate. The deleted scenes mentioned here makes me sad though, hope they are in the DVD.Thank you for another great inteview! (Joe interviewed her so well with the Weinstein one too). The first one with Todd,Cate,Rooney and Jake was also one of the best.

♡ OMG! Has anyone noticed the changes happened on her??? the way she reacts is no longer the same like how she was several months ago! now shes more like a master of speech instead of the shy little girl! and her facial expressions are so much more mature and relaxed!!! its sooooo blessful when you suddenly realised how time gave her so many more attractive characters, the wisdom and humor the smiles the cute abscence moment the look and even her silence is what the audiance mostly wanted to hear. cannot wait to see how awesome she would be in 10 years!

First, this guy is an awesome interviewer. Second, I had to laugh out loud when Rooney said she doesn't have much luck with sequels *cough* The Girl Who Played with Fire *cough*. But I'm still holding on to hope especially now that there's all this buzz about Sony's upcoming lineup. Please please please let it happen. I will pray to the old gods and the new. I will drown anyone I need to drown. I will make sacrifices to R'hllor. Anything. Just let it happen.

Wow Cate Blanchett really influenced her. Like 95% of what she said and the way she said it was said by Cate in their interviews and press conferences. I think it's cute. There's also some of Sarah Paulson's influence haha.
