iyie yie. another gut and replace video. pretty soon there will be none of these radios left. why dont people just use the amplifier that is already in the radio. its a simple switch and two resistors and then put the bluetooth modules line output into there. at the volume knob usually. people need to stop destroying vintage electronics

The radio doesn't work and I don't know how to fix it. Nothing was destroyed. I said I kept all the parts and didn't modify the case at all, in case I find someone to restore it. Pay attention and relax.

I agree with you, but one of the radios I picked up has 4 faulty tubes, a blown speaker, and a blown transformer...It's getting a brand new original grade finish...and Bluetooth. 🤣 Can't justify paying $140 in parts on this little Philco.

@@user-cq5oz6co5l well i guess thats an exception. Why not try to sell the parts in this case. Unfortunately the only way to fix some of these is to get another radio for parts. Hopefully someone can use the parts that are good. Im sure eventually there will only be an assortment of the same good parts and none of the parts needed to repair it

No need to find a second radio for parts, unless there are major parts missing or burned (rare). If a radio is complete then it's not that hard to do the servicing to get it playing. Goal it so keep a complete radio intact, they can all be restored. @@kwacz

@@watcher818 except for when you buy a radio only to discover that the parts you need are missing and no longer available anywhere. I bought three like this but was able to combine the parts from all three and make two complete working units. Then the remaining unit parts can be sold to help someone else with the same problem as he might need different parts than i did. I do know that there are a good deal of parts you can source to replace missing ones but not always possible.

Very nice. I've been wanting to do this for a while, and now that I see it's pretty straightforward, I'm going to do it. I don't like messing with electronics. I refurbished the case for a1920's upright that I took the chassis out of, and gave it for repair to a guy who sold antique radios out of a local group shop I rented in. Told me a few months to diagnose and round up the parts to fix it. Came in one week and his booth was empty. Owner told me he skipped on a couple of months rent, his phone was disconnected, and he was gone from the address the group shop had on file. I kept the case as a reminder that the public is generally OK, it's people that suck. : > )

Ugh, that would be so frustrating to know that your piece of history is gone missing but is out there somewhere. The bluetooth speaker is a really good alternative solution, since I know I would use it more than an AM radio.

Hey, thanks for watching and commenting. I had a basic electronics class in college and have a couple multimeters. I learned how to read the colors on resisters. That's about the extent of my knowledge though. My was pretty good at electronics and he had tube testers and other equipment. I'm surprised he didn't fix it, but not sure if he couldn't or if he just couldn't find the parts it needed.

Many times you find cabinets that you'll never find the chassis's for. This is the perfect way to go when a customer would like something to work in an otherwise dead issue. It saves the cabinet and gets you a job! Tnx fer the vid, Steve.

Thanks Charles! I have since installed an actual bluetooth speaker kit from parts express where I could actually put the controls in the original knob holes. It's a much better and user friendly conversion. I still think about getting it restored, but just can't justify the cost to end up with only an AM radio I would never use.

Hey Rick, wow, what a coincidence. I eventually found a bluetooth speaker kit at partsexpress.com that I was able to mount inside and use the the existing holes for the knobs and switches. Both ways work great and it's just cool to have a modernized old radio.

That would be cool. After this video, I found a bluetooth speaker kit on partsexpress.com and made a wooden bluetooth speaker. I bought an extra kit so I could go back and install it in this old radio, instead of the regular speaker I put in it.

Hey, thanks! This was fun and I still use that speaker. I found a bluetooth speaker electronics kit at partsexpress.com, so I have since taken out the Oontz and installed the kit. I was able to use all the existing holes in the radio for the switches and knobs. It turned out really cool and it's a better permanent solution.

Two years later, the obvious "bluetooth speaker" to use is an Amazon Echo or Google Home or such. Which is exactly what Ive done. I love your video and your commitment to not simply trashing the original parts. Even if you never get around to restoring the chassis, someone might. Consider selling that or donating it to someone who has the skills to see that it's used or that it's parts breathe life into other radios.

Hi Tim, yes, this was a pretty easy and quick way to convert it without modifying the case. I have since bought a proper bluetooth speaker kit from partsexpress.com and installed the parts with no modification too. The switch, knob, and jacks all went in the existing holes using washers as spacers.

Awesome! It's super easy Dale. You just have to be a little creative to mount the speaker inside if you don't want to alter the cabinet. I have another video where I built a Bluethooth Speaker using a kit from Parts Express. I have since replaced the Oontz speaker with one of these kits and was able to mount the lights/switches/knobs in the existing Philco cabinet holes. I like it a lot better since the controls are on the front.

Wow Steve, you did a great job by putting the non-working parts together in a box and hopefully you will find someone who knows about those kind of radios. Overall a great job cleaning it up and taking care to put the knobs on so another part of the original radio is showing. Hey Steve. I love restoring old things too. To clean and preserve the wood, try wiping it down with a product called Muphrey's Oil to clean the dirt and oils in the wood pores then then apply a coat of Tung oil to seal and preserve the wood (which I'm certain is pretty dried out after 80 years)..

You can clean off the crud on the finish. But if there is good lacquer remaining, none of the oil or treatments will get into the wood.Tung oil or whatever will sit on top of the good lacquer and not get into the wood. Clean, then paste wax is fine to protect the Lacquer over the wood. If the set has bare wood then yes, it will get into those places.

I got a reproduction 1930 Philco Radio back in 1974 that I used to listen to the CBS Radio Mystery Theater on back in the day. The radio no longer works (even though it's fully transistorized) and I came to the same conclusion - to take out the chassis and put in a bluetooth speaker. I ordered a new speaker and a mono bluetooth board from Amazon. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with the knobs, but I like your solution. I think I'll put in dummy potentiometers rather than dowels, though, because I'm afraid someone will try to turn the knobs and break them. The dial is more difficult, but I may adapt your idea and recreate the dial on some kind of clear material like an old overhead transparency. I did consider getting the electronics of the old radio repaired, but that would probably cost more than buying a new reproduction, most of which have BT built in. (And the radio was never very good. AM always had a bit of distortion.) Not sure why you thought you needed a stereo speaker. I would have raised up your platform to put it more in the center. Otherwise, great solution.

The knob holes have the on/off switch, input jack and two LEDs. The volume knob is in the large middle hole. I did attach a plywood back for the power jack. I like to hear the left/right stereo separation of the instruments in songs. For example, Highway to Hell just doesn't sound right if the guitar is not coming out of one side. Or, Van Halen with the guitar panned left and the plate reverb panned right. Mono that plays on only one side of the stereo mix can completely eliminate instruments panned to the other side.

Yes, just test it in an inconspicuous place like on the back or bottom to see how it looks before doing a show face. It comes in different colors.

Some good channels to watch to find out more about these old tube radios would be Mister Radio, Jack Saunders, and Mr. Carlson’s lab. They do videos on restoring vintage tube radios and televisions and give tips and tricks to fixing the chassis.

I've restored a similar looking one of those, but it had been updated with the inner workings to have both AM and FM sometime in the 60s, and the workings were actually fairly similar to modern radios, so it was relatively simple to fix. I don't envy you the task of repairing 1930s innards :-P

Well, I dunno if you can, by updated, I mean they essentially took the guts of a contemporary radio and just used the original knob locations and wired in the speaker to the output but the rest of the innards were from 60s era. Looked very much home-tinkered too. So I was the second tinkerer trying to breathe new life into the thing :-P

Murphy's makes wipes, very similar to Chlorox wipes, that are designed for cleaning wood. I used them on a MCM buffet table that was so dirty, it had turned black. The end result was absolutely amazing. A shot of furniture polish on it and it looked nearly new.

Thanks! I have since installed a bluetooth speaker kit from Parts Express and was able to mount the knobs, switches, lights, and jacks in the existing holes, still without modifying the original cabinet. It's a more built-in solution and better user experience with all the controls on the front.

This is a really great idea Steve. I love the led on the Bluetooth insert. My dad has a a radio similar to this, it was his dad's. I was told that it was bought in 1946 and the thing still works ( not very good mind you) lol. Anyway great video Steve I really enjoyed it.

love the project, I think one good addition would be a small piece of plexiglass over the blutooth logo. if it is slightly distressed it will give the blutooth logo a bit more of an old time feel.
