I have to say that, of all the KZfaq videos I watched about installing a combination switch/outlet, this video was the only one that got me there. I finally got the difference between the hot "line" and the un-hot "load" black wires, the "common" hot side of the receptacle, the need to splice in a connection to the "neutral", etc. The diagram kinda matched what I was seeing with the existing switch. Yes, the video was long and at times overly simplistic (but right for a complete novice as pointed out). The only thing really distracting were the constant interruptions of the ads.

I viewed this video never doing a switch like this and changing a single pole switch to a combo switch. He was very thorough on how and why the wiring goes like it should for this combo switch. Excellent Job he does! I would follow him or ask him questions.

Thanks - great job. The few other videos I watched did not explicitly say to add an additional wire to the existing neutral to put on the neutral (silver) screw of the new combo switch. I was thinking that's what I should do, but I wanted to hear or see someone say or do it so that there would be no question of doing the wrong thing. You both said it AND did it, which reassured me to proceed! Thanks very much.

If I dont care to have the switch work and just have the outlet work, can I take the Load wire from the original light switch and use that to feed the outlet on the bottom? Or does it have to be used top to top. basically just want to take the wires from the top and top, and move them to the bottom and bottom. My wiring is one black and one white. And adding another wire is a little to complicated for me.

The outlet that I want to convert over is only a 2 wire outlet (1950's house). I have tried every possible combination imaginable. Is it possible to have the switch control the outside light (which it's currently doing) AND have an outlet that can plug into?

What about the Red wire that is in the back of the original switch? What is that for and where does that go? I found my line, load, ground and neutral hidden in wire nuts just like in the video. But what about the red wire, what is it for and what do I do with it?

@@LEARNINGCHORDS Thank you for the reply; this room does not have a 3 way plug. It is a bedroom with only one light switch. I ended up putting the red wire on the second black terminal. I do have a wired smoke detector in this room and I think it must have never been wired correctly since when I tested the wire before with the neutral it did not read anything. Now that I connected it to the second black screw it now reads the 120v. I even tested power to the smoke detector which has a backup battery and as soon as I removed the battery it lost power. I really appreciate your video as it helped me understand how to find the hot wire vs the load wire and where to find the neutral hidden in the blue box. I even took your teachings to wire a dimmer; although that one hums my LEDs so I have to find a ELV dimmer even though this dimmer was LED compatible -it still flickers and has the LEDs make a buzzing sound but that is not related to this video. Thank you again for the quick response. I bet that other rooms with smoke detectors are also not being wired correctly.

@LEARNINGCHORDS
@LEARNINGCHORDS 2 жыл бұрын
i need more details...the brass tab on an outlet is used to connect the top and bottom outlets together. that way you only need two wires.. if you have the tab broken off on an outlet.. then top or bottom is normally always powered on and the other one is controlled by a SWITCH

What if i don't want the continuous power just switched power.? back story....the single pole toggle switch powers two lights, the ceiling and wall fixture. There is no outlet. so this switch receptacle would be awesome. There are three black wires connected currently the hot on one terminal and the other two on the other terminal. There seems to be white wires caped in the box but non on the switch. How can i get this work?

Can you please help me out? I replaced my kitchen light switch with a Legrand Radiant RCD38TRWCC6 Single Pole/3-Way Switch & 15 Amp Outlet Combo. It looks like the one you are demonstrating in this video. In my wall box I had 3 white wires and 3 black wires and a ground. With the common tab in tact (and the fascia facing front of you) I connected the one LINE hot wire to the bottom right common terminal, then I connected the two remaining black wires which is likely LOAD wires (didn't register hot with NCV tester) to the top left terminal. Then I connected all 3 white neutral wires via pigtail to the bottom left neutral terminal. Grounded it. When I turn the breaker on the outlet receptacle works fine and is on always. BUT the problem now is when the light switch is off, my outlet receptacle in the corner that runs my computer is also OFF. When the light switch is on, then my computer has power to turn on. When I turn the light switch off then my computer turns off. What the heck is going on? Can you please explain to me what I'm doing wrong?

This is not making sense sir..How can you run the hot wire from the switch to the Panel??? It has to go back up to the light and then to the panel..Your drawing is wrong.. The way you're showing we would have to run a separate black wire direct from the switch/ outlet device to the panel...OUTSIDE the wall???
