Thanks for posting this. I was working with a replacement combo switch and outlet where none of the screw heads were obviously colored for easy ID. The combo that I removed was from the 70's, and had a totally different layout than my modern unit.

You can also wire the device the other way around - line to brass screw, neutral to silver screw, and leave the jumper in place. Doing this will cause the switch to control the receptacle, which has potentially interesting use cases.

I have to echo others and say that this was a very helpful video. This was the first time that I replaced a combination switch and receptacle. I was replacing an incredibly old switch that was not clearly marked as newer switches are. Easy to follow and understand. Helped me to identify the wires and how to install the new switch. Avoided calling an electrician! Thanks!!

Like always a superb teaching video. I am 77 Vietnam veteran and I have a problem with a fan with lights which is supposed to be turned on by a 3-way switch. I bought it 10 years ago for 800 dollars and I have been unable to use it. Every time I hired an electrician, he charges me money but does not fix my problem. If you want the outlet to be controlled by the switch, you connect the incoming line to the brass terminal.

Thanks Bill, now I know why the switch wasn’t working that o was expecting, very simple. I just have to move one wire to the bronze screw, I installed in the black. So the power stay in the black screw and the switch wire goes to the bronze.

I know how to wire outlets and plugs, but I've never done a duplex combo like this before, and I was concerned about the switch turning off the power to the outlet. I think that I've got it now. Thank you!

When I was doing my apprenticeship the way I remember it would be B to B black to brass.the load wire. But at times the white wire can also be the load wire what you call continuity and that sometimes where things used to get tricky . But then you just reverse it white to b and your black becomes a neutral

thanks in the first two minutes I finally understood why it wasn't working for me. i was using a switch connection to give power to the receptacle lol. so that's why sometimes the black/whites are inversed, when they are a secondary line that comes from the light.

Great video as always. What’s the area shown at the end of the video? I spent about a week in SD about 5 years ago and got to visit several areas including IB, Coronado, Cabrillo, and also some further north (Del Mar? Oceanside?) but can’t remember them all. Great area which I hope to visit again some day.

This is excellent, in another video they said that on the two live screws, if you attach the live wire to the switch it will control the power going to the plug effectively shutting it off, but if you attach the live wire to the plug screw both plug and light switch have power, is this true?

Hey sparky thanks for the video, I installed the exact same switch. I attached the hot wire to only one black screw however when I turn on or off the switch it also turns the outlet on or off. Do I need to remove the tab and split the hot wire?

Thanks for the video. This is a single outlet and in one of your videos, you mentioned that you cannot use a single outlet with a 20 amp breaker. I have a 20 amp breaker and I want to use this combo outlet, can I?

Hello good night, just making sure I got this correct wire up outlet to control a light and once tabs aren’t broken, the outlet to the bottom will not be disturbed with the toggling of the light switch , once tab is broken then the socket will be turned on /off with the switch…. Did I say that correct ? Sorry I’m new to this !

The only video that actually shows where the load wire goes other videos said it goes on the brass one my outlet worked only when my switch was on I wanted continuous power to the outlet ,
