Great vid... but 15 minutes of showing us how to take out screws w pliers was painful. Then excessive time spent showing soldering... then skipping the whole wiring to the power supply, motor controller etc was kinda odd. so you are varying the current to the rotor to change the motor speed? What voltage resulted in the highest motor speed?

Just apply a low voltage to the rotor where the voltage regulator would wire in, have a battery attached to a dc 3 phase motor controller. One of the phases to each of the coils, Done. You vary the voltage from the motor controller, its pwm which give should a percentage of the full battery pack power depending on how much you tell it to.

So many of these BLDC conversions stops at explaining a lot of information. First, the arrangement of the three wires does set direction. If you knew the 120 degree order of them, you can then predict the direction the "motor" will spin. But everyone of them simply apply the three wires to the controller and never explain about that issue. Secondly, I have yet to see even one talk about how much torque these conversions have. If it simply spins, big deal. Now if it has some serious torque where you could use one for making projects that typically takes some HP, then that would be something to measure and talk about. So many good uses for a serious HP motors these days. Tell us how much power these conversions have... JMHO

when you increase the rotor voltage and amp, it will increase the rotor magnatic field. when the magnatic field stronger, it hard tu turn. that why the motor spin slower. you can check it yourself. spin the pulley by hand, lower voltage and lower amp are easy to spin compare to high voltage and high amp.

@@bro-shamsulnubairi8689 yes, that’s make sense. Then the ideal usage would be using “adjustable” power supply for the rotor, so when we needed torque (i.e. at start/hill) it could provide more voltage/current, when we needed speed it could lower the voltage/current.

Brushless hybrid. I know, through me off at first, too. The reason they say brushless (hybrid) is because the driving current is not flowing through the brushes. Only a couple amps to generate the field. This barely wears the brushes so they last MUCH longer than they would on a conventional brushed motor.

Considering most alternators provide 80 to 200 amps at 12 volts you would have at least that many kw of power that the motor can handle continuously. It would be something like a 3 to 5 hp electric motor. Or equivelant to a roughly 7 to 16 hp gas motor. Pretty powerful. Some alternators are designed to spin at 8k to 16k rpm in normal use too due to the belt gearing on the engine.

The way he connected things to the motor was 1) connect dc power to the rotor electromagnet winding, 2) connect the storebought sensorless ESC controller wires for phases 1, 2, and 3 to motor windings a, b and c in any order, and finally 3) connect the positive and negative power wires to their respective spots. The only things to watch out for are to not mistake the positive and negative power connections for each other, and to reverse the connections on motor windings b and c if you want to reverse the motor direction. Most ESCs will let you control direction through the ESC though. If you want to build an esc instead of buying one I suggest you watch Great Scott!'s DIY or Buy video on ESC controllers for a "lay of the land" so to speak first.

The rotating part is a wound rotor. The outer stationary part is called a stator. The rings on the rotor shaft the brushes ride on are called "slip rings. If you put power in the brushes, you get a synchronis motor. The 3 line input for the stator creates a rotating field because each phase is 120 degrees off from the one next to it in the sequence. If you switch any 2 leads, you change direction of rotation. Please don't try ro explain the science, just do it.

The brushless part is the fact that you run ac power through the 3 phase windings just like a bldc motor. You can run it with a esc designed for a sensorless brushless motor or with a 3 phase variable frequency drive. You just have to power the rotor windings since it is an electromagnet instead of a squirrel cage or permanent magnet.
@TheCSRTech
@TheCSRTech 3 жыл бұрын
@@joshnabours9102 So as I said, applying DC power to the rotor through brushes and slip rings. So NOT a brushless motor. A standard DC motor applies DC power through the same brushes except the rotor has a commutator instead of slip rings.
@joshnabours9102
@joshnabours9102 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCSRTech you are emphasizing the most insignificant part about the motor. This alternator is effectively a brushless motor with an electromagnet on the rotor instead of permanent magnets. The slip ring only serves to maintain contact with the spinning rotor winding where with a brushed dc motor the brushes serve as a way to change polarity of the windings to make the motor function at all. If you glued magnets onto the rotor this motor would be a 100% brushless dc motor. If you placed the 3 phase winding of an ac induction motor or bldc motor in the rotor portion of the motor it too would need some form of slip ring system to maintain electrical contact with the windings. They wouldn't cease to be induction or bldc motors though.... A brushless motor is only a squirrel cage induction motor with permanent magnets replacing the squirrel cage of the motor anyway.

@@joshnabours9102 Significant or not, if a motor has brushes it is not brushless. Simple english; not clickbait titles.
@joshnabours9102
@joshnabours9102 3 жыл бұрын
Let us back up for a minute to clear up something. Slip rings do not preform the same function as brushes. Brushes purpose is to switch the direction of dc current as the motor rotates. Slip rings purpose is to maintain constant contact with a portion of a device capable of spinning more than a certian number of degrees. This alternator motor is a brushless motor that has slip rings in order to allow the rotor to be an electromagnet for simple power output control and greater reliability in the harsh conditions of the engine bay. You can also find slip rings in non motor applications such as tank turrets or other rotating assemblies. Wires do not twist infinitely after all. They were also once used as the on/off power contractors on certain older motors controlled by mechanically linked levers. Brushless and dc motors can have slip rings, but only brushed motors have brushes. Alternators do not have brushes. They have slip rings. Have you ever seen a 3 phase brushed dc motor before? No. Because dc motors directly run on dc which does not have phases. I rest my case. You are simply incorrect.

Use the right tool for the job. A set of Torx drivers is a very cheap addition to your tool kit. Pliers destroy a lot of fasteners that you might want later on. Not only that, but if you round off or break the fastener in question before you get it removed, you complicate your job significantly. Use the right tool for the job. Also a cigarette lighter will do a nicer job of tightening heat shrink tubing, better than a soldering iron, anyway. It appears you are using flux core solder, so there is actually no need to apply extra flux. Otherwise, good vid, except it probably raises more questions than it answers. Nothing wrong with that, though.

If you want to be technical it is a hybrid induction motor. However, the main difference between this alternator as a motor and a bldc as a motor is that the rotor is an electromagnet instead of a permanent magnet. And the poorer power efficiency. You can drive the alternator motor with a sensorless esc just like a bldc motor or you can use a vfd like a 3 phase induction motor.

Why do other guys need to use two motor controllers but you and some other guy always use 1? What's the fucking secret. I can't clearly see where you connect the positive and negative ends of the brushes.
