On today's show I discuss my use of the OCR feature on the reMarkable taking handwritten notes to text. As always, kind of one of my live reviews. My handwriting is not the best, so please take that into consideration.

I'm in the process of writing a book and love my Remarkable tablet (1st Gen). Although I've had this device for several years, I've never used the convert to text and send feature. While I wouldn't say my handwriting is immaculate, I was pleasantly surprised to see how accurate the conversion is. Thanks for the video!

Hi, I want to convert to text and save that file on my remarkable. But it keep reverting to handwriting even after I convert it to email and send. isn't there a way to save the conversion on the remarkable device?

Hey! I stumbled across your channel recently and really appreciate the quality of your content! I have a short question: can you take notes in ePUB books on the remarkable? As I am someone who makes a lot of notes in my books, that would be an argument for me to finally go paperless with the remarkable two. Thanks again for the content and best regards from Germany!

You know I THINK you can as long as they are DRM FREE - let me double check You can read DRM-free ePUB ebooks on the reMarkable, as well as PDFs. Kindle ebooks are not supported. (So I think you are good to go) Just found that on the website :) I don't have any on my device - but sure sounds like it. I will try and find one and put on one and test it.... thanks for the comment!

So so can you convert without sanding? I.e. can you change from handwriting to type on your reMarkable

Actually, it is not that bad! I am looking forward to using this option, even if I have to correct minor errors later on my computer. It will be nice to know if the 2nd gen display of the rM2 improves the accuracy (although it is probably a software thing, idk). Again, nice to hear from you!

I think it might encourage me to work on making my handwriting neater, which is a win-win, neater handwriting in general and turning notes into text more often and using that function

I tryed it out with a long italics handwritten text in italian language (my mother-language) and except for few errors like 50 instead of SO (that maybe if i write with dots (S.O. instead) it would not be mispelled (it is an abbreviation for 'Sistema Operativo' in english Operative System => OS) and some lowercase instead of uppercase i wrote and he not recognise the uppercase Q but it is really impressive how it worked well! yes there is really few stuff to correct manually then u should fully read the output, but some words u writed bad are corrected like i write (mispelled) 'potrenmo' instead of (correct) 'potremmo' and he guessed the right word!

It's totally lame that I can't keep the OCR within the document ON the reMarkable. Why would I ONLY want this feature to end up with sending by email? The point of the OCR is to be able to convert my handwriting to Type so that I'm taking notes but it'll be editible later if I make the notepage a PDF. ONLY being able to send this OCR by email is extremely limiting.

1. Open the page itself 2. On bottom left, click on the four squares button 3. Long click on the page to bring up top menu 4. You will see the “Convert To Text” option on menu bar 5. Press it and it will convert to text and create a new page with the converted text.

Hi Jimmy, Great video, as always and thank you. So I have a question about this functionality. Are you only able to convert and export/send one page at a time or can you do multiple pages of your notes at once?

Fred, thank you - you can send multiple pages for sure but it will all come in one email.... it works but not the best functionality.... thanks for asking...

You can now convert to text without sending as an email: 1. Open the page itself 2. On bottom left, click on the four squares button 3. Long click on the page to bring up top menu 4. You will see the “Convert To Text” option on menu bar 5. Press it and it will convert to text and create a new page with the converted text. It isn’t intuitive, but once you learn how, this will work every time.

Love the videos on taking notes with the remarkable and other tablets. I actually ordered the remarkable 2 but will get mine in October. I am kind of curious to find a cheap solution which can take notes but being able to upload directly seamlessly to the cloud and thats it - allow writing multiple pages. The Boogie boards wont work as you need to take picture with a phone every time. I was looking at the pen tablets I have not purchased any of those.. What do you think of these as cheap alternatives?

@@morningcoach Thanks for the reply on this. The rocket book is a great option. Although seems there is a market opportunity for a low cost remarkable with these basic features. The Smart pens are good too..

@@morningcoach One last point here. I am testing out the livescribe pen as well. It actually transfers the writing without needing to scan with a phone.. very similar to the rocketbook - www.amazon.com/dp/B087CLF1SL/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_x0BpFbSW33NPP

It did pretty well in my opinion! It could be very useful, I think it depends on why and how you’d use it. Good to be more positive than you haha! ;) Great video, interesting to see you do it real time.

Does this have an insert to certain business applications capability? My handwriting is decent, this gives me hope as I want it for this reason alone.

It is OK Michelle - one of the only devices that has OCR - my handwriting sucks LOL, if you have good handwriting I think it will make a big difference!! :) Thanks for asking!

THX, that's one functionality I've been wanting to check for some time now. Question : doesn't the Rocketbook have kind of a similar functionality? I believe you can send out your note into a pdf with your converted handwritten text on. If so would you say it's better than the Rm? Keep up the good work sir, you're the best. 😊

You know I have to try it - I know they do I just haven't used it much. One of the issues is my handwriting isn't stellar which doesn't help at all, but at least I will try and see if it is better. Thanks for the question....

I've used the OCR on Rocketbook and it's actually pretty darn good. I was impressed and my handwriting isn't the best either

Might be off topic so Im sorry. How's the battery life on RM1? I can't wait anymore for RM2. I'm a student. I'm having difficulty deciding whether to buy this or Papyr (they gave me a discount, price is $549 since I'm a student). Please help. My main goal is writing lectures and annotating PDF's. I have an old Ipad Pro but it hurts my eyes and writing feeling is awful. Thanks in advance.

You know they have so many different features. I would buy the Papyr if you are going to being using it for collaboration, I would buy the reMarkable for notes. I do use the Papyr for notes, but the RM and Quaderno have a little better speed to them. With that being said the Papyr is V1.0 of the software I bet it will get better. I do love the file system on both the RM and Papyr. Good price for the device. I KNOW not much help, but they both are so different I don't want to stear you the wrong way.... thanks for the question!!!

Hi everyone, how has the technology been developed in terms of recognising historical documents (i.e. letters & diaries) when the handwriting is very cursive?

I am not hopeful that OCR to Text will work with my handwriting. I am looking for PDF (HelpDesk Tickets) mark ups and adding note layers of resolutions. Plus Project notebooks, meeting minutes and personal todos/lists. So, fun to see OCR to Text in action, but not on my top 100 anticipated uses. Looking forward to you getting your rM2 and unboxing.

Hey Jake as of right now you have to email it to you as text, then you could put it into Word etc... and export to PDF - but not directly YET as I know of, thanks for the question!!

That’s a shame, I ordered my reMarkable 2 so I can write stories on it as I swear staring at my laptop screen is burning through my brain and I really miss writing with a pen.

Practice good handwriting and space your lines fairly apartment from eachother, top and bottom and it aught to work fine. I've been using rocketbook and one note for years and ocr is in my experience as good as the effort we put in to help it. 😉. I'm in batch 8 and it feels like an eternity still to wait.

Is there anybody that can help me ? ..... I am trying to contact ReMarkable, the company, phone, email, whatever, no chance ! I have a ReM 1st generation, and i need to backup my files to my macbook. The problem is that the browser they offer for that 10.11.99.1/ is not working !!! when i wanna connect it via USB cable. I am really bummed about that fact that it looks like their focus is only on selling those items, and NOT all ALL taking care of the needs of the customers. IF there is anybody that can help me out, Please drop a message. Maybe sombody else hat that same problem. Thank you ! best

Only partly useful. The note of still not searchable, and it's hard to edit the email before sending it, to correct the mistakes from the handwriting recognition.

I am less than impressed. The presenter did not show how the conversion errors were corrected. I have just paid good money for reMarkable2 so I hope that it works far better than I saw demonstrated here.

Hey William thanks for the comment!! IT really depends on your handwriting, they use a 3rd party that converts. If you have good handwriting you may be good to go.

I resold my Remarkable after 1 week. The text conversation simply doesn’t work the way it should in the year 2020! Feels like very old tech. Also landscape mode text conversation doesn’t work at all!!! Simply not supported. This was a deal breaker for me. Sadly it’s goodbye Remarkable :( you could have been great.
