It's been almost four years since the reMarkable 2 was first released, and at that time there were no competitors and the device was clearly the best. Fast-forward to today, and a good bit has changed. Is the reMarkable still worth it in 2024? Let's find out.

"Who should buy" 100%. Nailed it. You are exactly who they designed this for. Comparing it to paper is the *only* comparison that makes sense. It was the design center, according to their pre-success papers. Then again, you are a designer, so you know all about that

The thing I love about the Remarkable is that it really feels like an extension of my laptop rather than being a separate device. The chrome extension and desktop app sync almost instantly. I've had so many devices that's sync function was unreliable. The Remarkable is so reliable that it's quicker and better than printing a document. I've now side loaded my ebooks to it and I am using it as my primary reading device. I love that I can actually annotate the books rather than just writing on little post it notes. (I also own the Scribe). I know others rave about the Boox devices but I've owned many Android tablets and the number of apps that let you use a stylus and are designed for a large screen are minimal. The only major complaint I have against the remarkable is that you can't search for handwriting. We're paying for a cloud subscription, and this should be included in the price.

I absolutely love my RM2. It’s exactly what you say. A great replacement for my paper journals. I use it everyday at work. I love the tactile feeling of writing and it sits next to my keyboard while I work. I grab it for all my meetings and just share my notes when done. I wavered about the price, but after buying it I would get another if I accidentally broke it. The google drive integration ticked the final box for me and ease of importing docs to sign and email.

thanks for the brilliant review, I'm myself a Remarkable 2 user and I love it. one benefit of Remarkable 2 is that's its size is ideal for reading magazines and newspapers which we can send easily in form of PDFs. I like skim through magazines and newpapers and its ideal way to do that rather than read on my iphone or Ipad or even a kindle.

Brandon, great video. Totally agree..I spent a year with the A5X and even purchased the A6X2. I love the Supernote and still do. But it was missing two things for me. Better synchronization and no color pens or highlights. I still have them but will probably sell the A6X2. I then tried the Boox Air 3c and found it was taking a lot of steps to do a few simple things I needed to do while writing, plus I could never get the Kindle App on mine to work. Yes it has the color pens and highlights but there were just too many distractions for me to concentrate on writing. I have a phone and android tablet for all that. I sent the Boox back. Then I heard the remarkable had color pens and highlights and I remember watching a bunch of your discussions on the remarkable. I just ordered it and received it a couple of weeks ago and I have found my sweet spot of a tablet. You are correct when you discuss use case. That's what everyone has to decide. Sorry for the long post, but bottom line my use case is that I teach, and for me to teach it helps me to write in different colors and highlights, plus it helps to move my writing around because while writing thoughts don't always come in the perfect sequence. So when I have everything the way I like it, I preview it on my computer, (which is almost instantaneous and in color) and if everything is the way I like it, I then print it out in color and teach from paper. After I teach, I throw the paper away but I always have a copy on my remarkable. The only thing that might make me change would be if they come out with the bigger color version of remarkable, then I wouldn't need to print to paper. Thanks for all you do on this channel.

Great review. I love this device & was wondering if I'm the only person still using one ;) I don't even write or draw, but am extremely busy and use it purely to plan out work, to do lists, diagrams etc. I love how amazingly fast it is to pick up, jot down some notes in whatever format I want and then refer to them anytime. No opening an app, updates or having to type + the battery lasts ages. Can't wait for the R3!

While I can see the break of flow state with the Boox device, I find that if you choose to use the Note Air 3 for reading and notes is does all of Remarkable and allows me not to carry a Kindle or my phone for the newspaper. A nice compromise for purchasing less devices.

Thank you for your video. It helped me to narrow my expectations. Mostly because I only use my eink tablet for writing and creativity. But it's true that I miss a lot the colour option. Before my eink device, I wrote and used notebooks regularly, and I always carry a pack of colour pens (I still do carry them with me and a notebook). But using a e-ink tablet is so cool and nice feeling, knowing that everything is in there and reachable... So, if you are a creative that is extremely happy with the remarkable like experience... But you need colour to develop your work... Where should I be looking for? I really don't need all that connectivity and computer/phone apps... But I need at least some size for my notes to write and design on. Is the Tab Ultra C the only option? Would the Nova AirC be ok today? Could I use the Kobo Libra Colour? Thank you in advance for your time and help! Have a very nice week!

I have been using the Remarkable 2 for years. I do not recommend it for 2024; it is outdated for current needs. Yes, it is a note-taking device, but it is necessary to add color to the notes, and RM2 does not allow this. The RM2 software is easy to use, yes, but it is so simple that many necessary options are missing, and the software does not implement them. Also, it must be mentioned that to have certain document storage functionalities on the company's servers, a monthly subscription is necessary. How? Yes, if you do not pay every month, all your documents that you have not used in the last 50 days will be deleted from the cloud. The best thing about the RM2 is the writing feel, which is very good, but the very basic software, the lack of color, and the need to subscribe for certain functionalities, make it an outdated device.

I was surprised to find that of all the options, I ultimately selected the Remarkable in 2024. Polished cloud support, EU privacy, honoring the GPL, and substantial likelihood of long-term support were all major deciding factors. Happy with it so far, though viable Google Docs collaboration and at-rest encryption would take the Remarkable to another level for professional work.

@@BrandonKBoswell I feel like the Drive integration is okay, but I can't comment/annotate Google Docs without first exporting them from Docs, so the comments aren't visible to co-workers. Encrypted storage feels like something reMarkable could more readily address. Today, it is my impression that a lost device could lead to the leaking of confidential documents stored on the device.

This is a fantastic breakdown of the Remarkable use case. It’s a like having a digital Moleskin or my personal favorite Shinola notebook. My company provides me an awful Dell laptop. I don’t use it much. I use an M1 IPad Pro, 12.9 for most of what I do. The remarkable is for clarity of thought. When I’m brainstorming. I also it to take notes when I’m in person or using my iPad for Video Meetings. The remarkable is the perfect size and has the best writing experience. It’s a notepad. That’s what I like, but the hardware is outpaced by the software. I doubt I’ll upgrade however. It’s a notebook. I will however be upgrading to the M4 IPad 13in.

I want to replace physical notebooks, esp with something that can take my notes and save them digitally where they should be, whether it's for work or personal matters. And make it easier for me to turn them into something I can use on my computer. I was hesitant to go with reMarkable 2 because no one likes spending a lot of money only for the new model to come out shortly after. It makes the already short life span of tech become a ticking time bomb.

I recently got an RM2, after having the RM1 since they released in 2017. I'm still not convinced that I needed the upgrade: even the RM1 holds up quite well, although the support for a pen with an eraser is pretty neat. All round it's a great device, and I love it for taking notes, reading books, and in particular articles/papers where I want to annotate / highlight stuff. Also, worthy of note: it gets a lot of approving 'oohs' and 'aahs' in meeting rooms and at conferences. People tell me that I look more engaged and present than people taking notes on a laptop, who are "hidden" behind the folded up screen and could be anywhere between fully present and just zoned out and into whatever they're doing on their laptop instead. I wouldn't buy it just because it makes you look professional, but it certainly does help. Screen-sharing to a Teams meeting to show notes and draft things is also very nice.

I keep watching reviews but I keep going back to the remarkable 2. Even though It doesn't have a backlight, I want to buy a device for the sole purpose of replacing my notebooks for school/work, to have it next to me for note taking while reading physical books, and to make to do notes for myself. It is also important for me to keep the paper grippy feel, as I hate the feeling of writing on glass and would just go back to paper, also it need to be thin and light enough to fit on my computer bag or briefcase without adding much bulk to it with a long battery because I forget to charge my phone, much less an e-ink! I think it will be hard for me to find anything else other than the remarkable, I just wish they came out with the remarkable 3 already. Anything that's handwritten and has stayed handwritten - i.e., you haven't converted to text - isn't searchable, no. You'd have to convert it all to text to be able to search, or potentially make headers with typed text to let you search through those (you still wouldn't be able to search the text body, though).

I've been using a remarkable 2 for a year and a half for university, and it's almost perfect. I bought the keyboard case 3 months ago and it's even better than before. However, I find they're too slow to update the tablet, the last few updates were pretty useless to be honest (today's beta update which makes files prettier for example is the last thing I wanted to have as an update....). I've been asking the development team for months to add circles, which are absolutely essential for students like me. I've been asking for months to be able to change PDF note page templates which would take maximum 10 minutes to code for them, move pages in imported PDFs, copy and paste images (I know it can be difficult to code, but it can be done). Also, adding a green pen isn't unfeasible, and would be really cool. However, I really don't think they care what their users think in the long run. I'm pretty disappointed in them for that.

Price is a factor worth noting. I just recently bought a Kindle Scribe after spending some time shopping all of the options including the Remarkable 2. My final decision came down to those two devices, and price probably was the single biggest deciding factor. I got the Scribe for $239, and the Remarkable 2 right now is listed at $399. The reMarkable is not (just) an e-Ink device, it is the perfect digital piece of paper in front of you. Just try other devices, than you realize how good (easy to use, seamless work of desktop and mobile Apps) and precise the RM2 is! Important: there is no difference when using notebooks, PDFs and eBooks - you can store them within the same folder, same toolset and accessable from the Apps, too! Just because of how e-ink refresh rates work, you would never get as smooth zooming in and out as with for instance an iPad. If your main workflow is drawing, zooming out to see an overview and in to draw details, then the RM isn't for you. If that's not your main task, I don't think you would be bothered much by zooming and panning speed. Panning down to extend a page can certainly be a bit choppy, but personally I just prefer making new pages anyways since that keeps a regular paper aspect size should I want to print later.

I own this, and LOVE to write on it, and use it WHEN I get a chance to USE it. But I find myself too worried on using it and breaking it, and I think this is the biggest reason it doesn’t get used as much as I would. It’s a very expensive writing tablet. If you break it, it’s a big loss! Even when traveling, I find myself opting not to pack it, because when I fly and travel for work, it can get hectic. It hinders my packing because now I am too worried to over-pack and causing it to bend inside my backpack or carry-on. A cheap notepad is durable takes a beating and still works (a also drop things a lot). Lol. So, I use it at home more often than I do on the road.

What pisses me off the most about these devices is that everyone is just ok with the prices and the criticism is dismissed as "It's a niche product so of course it's expensive". That argument is just wrong. These aren't niche, they're expensive. The proof? If these things were affordable, wouldn't every student have one? Grade 1 all the way through college / university. Every tradesman, artist, professional, etc, etc. These things would be a multi billion dollar a year industry, if only eink (the company) weren't so incompetent / greedy. I don't blame the makers of these devices, I blame the company that makes the eink displays

Anyone on the fence, allow me to help you. Do you want to replace your $5 notebook with a $600+ tablet that is only capable of taking notes? If so, then these devices are for you. There is only one advantage to these devices and that is that it really does feel like writing on paper when you use their stylus'. And that the paper display is easier on the eyes. That's it. An Ipad is CHEAPER and does everything these do. It just doesn't give you the paper experience. Personally, I can't stand writing on paper and I'll never understand the desire to replicate it. To summarize, if you already have a tablet, you'd be spending an additional $600 to get a paper experience. If you don't already have a tablet, and want / need one, you'll be spending an additional $600 to get a paper experience...
