How many of you have parts of your property with little to no wildlife value? Whether it's an abandoned pasture or strip of non desirable weeds just about every farm has a part that could be improved. In the case of Tom's neighbor, it was an abandoned pasture. While the conversion will take some time and fight after decades of fescue growth, Tom's going to win the war and turn this part of the farm into beneficial native warm season grasses. Watch to see how he's done it so far and the plan in the coming months as he puts the seed in the ground.

Just curious. What is wrong with some broadleafs and woody browse like blackberrys showing up in the warm season grasses? From what I have seen the deer just tend to skirt around warm season grass stands unless there is some structure or food in it. Has this not been your experience? I would think some early to mid successional growth would be a good thing. Edge is a good thing right? It takes a long time to let some woody browse to grow. If I saw blackberrys in my grasses I would welcome it. My Swedbank is so depleted that is not the case unfortunately.

What you're doing ought to work great. Let some of those blackberries and other "natives" grow in with the NWSG. Makes it even better!

What is the best time to broadcast switch grass by a hand spreader

We've done it two different ways: broadcasting late winter as a frost seeding method or early summer. For just broadcasting, best bet would probably be the late winter frost seeding, but make sure you have a clean area. Give it a good burndown with herbicide in the fall. Don't get dejected if you don't see much sign of Switch the first few months. It spends it's early stages growing a root structure before it'll take off above ground.

Really wished people would stop using chemicals to fight nature and work with it instead. Really love the video quality guys but I cannot support the destruction the soil biology and the rivers caused by theses practices. Thanks for the years of great content and best of luck.

Marc Bujold No way you can out compete invasive fescue without chemical. This is improvement, Gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelet.

@@ChrisJones-mw8cn I agree that just planting in the current state wouldn't work. My point was that the use of chemicals aren't required (and should be avoided) to revert back the succession of an climax ecosystem.

There is no way possible to effectively beat invasive fescue without treating it chemically. Sure, there's lots of half a$$ed schemes out there, and none of them work long term. Go ahead, give them a try, and in a couple years you'll be out there trying to figure out how to save your planting from the fescue invasion. 👎
