@LevelUpMechanics Just ordered some headlights, new wheels( Enkei JS10) and a spoiler similar to the one you have. Plan on doing the brake conversion, a 2011 front end, suspension work. Long term is to do a K24 swap, but an all motor R18 has done well for me since I bought the car. We'll see how 2024 treats me, haha.

I did finish the Acura TL brake master cylinder upgrade, and the results are very good, although the modifications to the backside of the air filter housing were pretty extensive and time consuming in order to fit the whole assembly in without the pressure lines interfering with the stock air filter housing. If there’s a good intake filter charge pipe that has a well designed MAF sensor inline, I’d have considered it, but I’m trying to stay as stock as possible.

I think even more pressure could be gained by going up to the 1/4” brake lines from the BMC to the ABS pump. Instead of reducing the BMC with adapters, move the 1/4 to 3/16” adapter to the ABS pump, and run 1/4” steel hard lines from the Acura BMC to the stock ABS pump. At least more volume would be present at the ABS pump. 2 more cents!

Regardless, mark your Acura BMC with an ID tag or paint that tells the next owner what to buy when the BMC eventually fails down the road.

Nice Job. I have a plan to do same job. Mine is 15 inch steel rims on rear and front. Is there no interference with the 15-inch steel rim after installing the rear caliper?

I would still get the kraftwerks supercharger, even though they say it's only for the coupe. I may have to do some minor fabrication, but I think it would still be a viable option.

How do you install the rear wheel hubs to the dust shield? Also, did the pair of wheel hubs in description come with the required bolts? I didn’t see anything on that when I opened the link.

I'm pretty sure the rear dust shields are bolt on (they should bolt on with three 10mm bolts). First, you would install the splash shield onto the knuckle. Afterward, you would install the wheel bearing & hub assembly onto the knuckle. The bolts for the wheel hubs are not included with the hubs. You would have to get those 4 bolts (per side) separately.

Upon further research, I found the part number for the hub bolts - 90163-SNA-000 These bolts are the SAME EXACT BOLTS that are installed on your current rear drum setup. You can just use the hub bolts from your rear drums and use them for the disc brake setup. The hub bolts are marked with a “10” stamped into the head, so stay away from 8.8 bolts, too soft.

I have a full parts car which has disc in the rear, think it’s a lx or ex, whatever the highest trim base is. I recently just got another but it’s a dx would like to swap it over. All the stuff from my lx or ex whatever model it is will work correct?

Rear disc brakes are normally found only on EX and Si models (the parts are exactly the same). You can definitely use your donor civic to transfer over the rear brakes to your DX Civic.

I couldn't find the rear brake dust shields on Amazon, but you can still purchase them from Honda if need be. The part number is 43253-SNA-A00 (or 43253-SNX-A00 - both part numbers refer to the same shield). You will need two of them (obviously lol 😆). www.hondapartswholesale.com/oem-parts/honda-splash-guard-rear-43253snaa00 As far as the copper crush washers for the brake caliper banjo bolt is concerned, I do not remember the exact size. The copper washers came included with the PowerStop rear brake kit (calipers, rotors, and pads) that I purchased. I hope this info helps! 😁

Or can you just get two of the same part number and rotate it until it can bolt onto the knuckle? I’m looking on Honda’s website and the pictures show different angles.

As far as the splash / dust shields are concerned, they are not "side-specific". You can just rotate them to line up correctly for whichever side you are installing them 😁👍

I’m working with an LX automatic R18 I bought last August as a cheaper alternative to my T100 pickup. My question is: Have you looked into a compatible brake master cylinder with a larger main piston bore? I bought a BMC for a 2008 Acura TL, and am looking to upgrade my current setup to the .816” bore from the stock .750” piston. Everyone seems to wanna paint the parts as loudly as possible, and put the BBK’s on with a BMC that is marginal in the car’s stock form. A good foundation is my obsession, nothing worse than brake failure.

I've know that a common BBK upgrade for the 8th Gen Civic is to pair the Acura TL BMC with the brembo-style front calipers. Once I finish adding more power to my civic (skunk2 camshaft & kraftwerks supercharger), I may have to bite the bullet and do this brake upgrade. Until then, my current setup is still working flawlessly. For now... 🤣 🤣 🤣

I personally wouldn’t invest anything internally in an R 18, simply because of the block defect and the popsicle stick connecting rods. I’ll choose to live vicariously through your experiences when it comes to doing anything to that engine. I feel like I took my eyes off the prize, after I got the civic, and stopped working on the T100. The car handles like a miniature, Porsche, and respond well to simple upgrades to the suspension. I really like my 19 mm rear swaybar from Eibach, but I enjoy this new toy so much, I’m overspending on it. These cars are sheet metal shells with well engineered solid castings that make them cheaper to manufacture, but long term, this car will be a pile of rust long before the full framed T100 pickup. I’m impressed with this car, it’s so fun to drive, and I’d love to have an Si, but go out and try to find one!

That’s exactly why I bought the Civic, my T100 is supercharged, and I eventually smoked the #4 exhaust valve. This car is supposed to be a daily driver, but I’ve already replaced every bushing and joint in the front, and now I’m focusing on the rear. Tip: if you tear up or just want new hardware to mount your rear wheel hubs, get an M10-1.25 x 55 mm hex head, flanged head bolt, you’ll neeed 8 of them. Three and a half threads are visible on the anchor side of the hub. Honda calls for a 53 mm length bolt, good luck finding one anywhere else but at the dealer. 10 is stamped into the head, so be sure to get a 10/8 hardness steel alloy fastener.

I am using the eibach pro kit springs. They lower the front by 1" and the rear by 1.2" They are pretty decent as far as ride quality is concerned. Eventually, I will upgrade to a Fortune Auto Coilover setup. But for now, the eibach & truharts will do the trick for the time being 😁👍.

I looked every where on the net and nothing seem to come up. uneven ebrake cable at the center console area. after installation, were your cables uneven? if so, how did you fix it? if not, i’m sol lol. But I checked, double check every thing. from the caliper to the thing holding the cables. adjusted the nut but still uneven. hope to hear your response soon.

I replaced the E-Brake cables with ones that are compatible with the rear caliper setup (the left and right E-Brake cables have different part numbers). Do you have a Coupe or a Sedan? Because, if I remember correctly, there are different part numbers depending on the body style. Also, you will want to make sure that your cables are not mixed up between the left & right sides. Also, if I remember correctly, my cables were slightly uneven... but the bracket that both cable ends attach to can pivot... so you can adjust the single cable leading to the E-Brake handle until there is tension on both cables leading to the calipers... I think if you adjust the single cable leading to the E-Brake handle, this might resolve your issue...

The bracket that connects all 3 cables together will look slanted once you adjust the single cable leading to the handle... but since that bracket can pivot, it shouldn't apply any excess pull on the "shorter" caliper cable... it will just "twist" until both caliper cables have tension... Once both cables have tension, you will be able to pull the E-Brake handle and use your parking brake correctly... it may take a little bit of trial-and-error to adjust that single cable to the point where you need it to be. Let me know if this adjustment resolves your problem 😁👍.

There are no wrapping videos just yet. The grille was my very first attempt ever at vinyl wrapping, so I was more focused on learning a new skill. Ironically enough, I found an oem-style "carbon fiber" front grille on eBay a few weeks ago, and I will be making a video on that one soon. I also found "carbon fiber" covers for the side view mirrors, too 😁. Now I'm just waiting for everything to arrive 🤞🤞.

Since everything (besides the rear suspension knuckles) was brand new, I spent A LOT 🤣. Probably$700-$800... but this also includes the extra upgrades that I added while I was in there (stainless steel brake lines, polyurethane bushings, extended wheel studs, etc). Don’t need to replace the proportioning valve with the new increased brake pressure that will be going to the rear wheels? Also what are your gauge pods for?

The 8th gen civic doesn't have a proportioning valve. Instead, brake pressure is controlled electronically by the ABS module. I believe it's called "electronic brake distribution" (EBD). I haven't had any brake pressure issues with the rear disc brake conversion 😁👍. As far as the gauge pods go, I currently have an oil pressure gauge and a wideband AFR gauge. They are the Prosport JDM 52mm (2-1/16") series. Eventually, I plan on boosting the R18. I hope this info helps! 👍👍

@@LevelUpMechanics Okay cool 😎. I have a bbk for the front off a TLS so was curious if adding the rear conversion would cause any pressure issues Ahah. I plan to also have the BBK for the rear as well when doing the conversion so not sure how that will affect braking pressure for the front and rear.

I think as long as you have the correct brake master cylinder for your setup, that is what matters the most when upgrading brakes on the 8th gen...

It is possible that the rear wheel bearings & hubs from the drum brake setup could be compatible with the rear disc brakes. The part numbers between the two are almost identical (but not exact). I honestly didn't try to use the drum wheel bearing & hub assemblies, so I don't really remember if there was an actual difference or not. Since the part numbers between the two are different, I just decided it would be beneficial to use the parts that would be made for an EX / Si. I would be very interested to know for sure if the LX / DX rear wheel bearings & hubs could work with the rear disc brake conversion. Unfortunately, I did not think to compare the parts to see what differences there may be.

Lol it's a good question 👍. The ABS wheel speed sensors transfer over to the new setup. No modification is needed.

If you look at the brake master cylinder cap, it should state that either DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid can be used. DOT 3 brake fluid will absorb less water than DOT 4 from the air over time, meaning you'll need to have your fluid changed less frequently. DOT 4 brake fluid has higher dry and wet boiling points, making it safer for higher temperatures. So far, I've had no issues using DOT 3 brake fluid. Plus, it's always good to know that upgrading to DOT 4 brake fluid is always an option.

Unfortunately, no. Originally, I tried to press out the old bushings using a ball joint removal tool (basically a really big c-clamp with a lot of attachments) with no luck. I ended up having to use a hydraulic press (at work) to successfully remove & install the LCA bushings.

@@LevelUpMechanicscan you help explain what the metal pieces in the kit do? I’m seeing 6 big metal sleeves, 2 smaller metal sleeves, 2 wides sleeves, and the 2 of the long cylinders with bolt holes on either end. Trying to fully understand what all of those are used for.

As far as rear braking is concerned, the feeling is identical to the drum brakes. Since the front brakes tend to do a majority of the work to begin with, there is not much difference in performance when you compare the rear drum brakes to rear disc brakes... There are a few pros & cons for both drum brakes and disc brakes. Rear drum brake shoes tend to be much more effective as a parking brake, but they are typically a pain in the butt when it comes time to servicing them. Rear disc brakes are very easy to service, but parts can cost more when compared to drum counterparts. For me, I wanted rear disc brakes simply because they are aesthetically pleasing and are easy to work on. Plus, it gave me a good reason to install some polyurethane bushings & extended wheel studs & stainless steel brake lines 😁.

The rotor shields came with the rear knuckles that I purchased from a junk yard (I just cleaned them up and repainted them with high-temp spray paint). I couldn't find the rear brake dust shields on Amazon, but you can still purchase them from Honda if need be. The part number is 43253-SNA-A00 (or 43253-SNX-A00 - both part numbers refer to the same shield). @@LevelUpMechanics I found a 2007 EX with no engine or trans, paid $100 for it! So just gotta hope the ebrake cables are fully functioning. Brake pads were missing from the passenger side rear so the ebrake has no tension right now. Fingers crossed lol

Some of these parts are also compatible with the 9th Gen Civics, but not all of them. The PowerStop brake kit should be compatible. Other parts may not be compatible (like the parking brake cables, rear suspension knuckles, etc)...

8th Gen Civics that have rear disc brakes all use the same parts. If an LX-S has factory rear disc brakes, then that could work too 😁👍. I just mentioned EX & Si models because they are more common to find in regards to donor parts.

I’m having trouble finding the dust shields online, I bought new knuckles from Amazon, and of course, the dust covers aren’t included with the knuckles. I found a guy on ebay that wants $59.99 EACH. TOO MUCH!!!

That’s exactly what I did, they’ll arrive tomorrow, I still need to get the piddly screws, washers, and nuts I’ll need to have everything ready for the job. Little things like the four bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle, the screws for the dust shield, etc. Thanks for taking the time to help me out! I just bought the forward bushings for the rear trailing arms, mine knock occasionally, these are Megan Racing spherical bushings, so they should last a long time, although I’m afraid they may be too stiff, the stock rubber bushings are only available as part of the full left or right hand side suspension arm assembly. I wish I could get access to the parts shelves at my location chain auto parts store, so I could take measurements and find the part with the correct dimensions, but I’d still be limited to the rubber bushings. I’ll let you know how they feel afterwards. Thanks so much for your thorough tutorials, they’re the best on KZfaq.

So i changed my rear trailing arms and rear shock absorbers and since then i have this bumping sound from the rear anytime im on a bumpy road. Kinda like the shock absorbers are not working as they should be. I keep thinking i didnt buy oem rear shock absorbers but i think i need a second opinion.

It sounds like there might be a chance that the rear shocks are not assembled correctly. The only suggestion I can think of is to recheck your work. If you are unsure of how everything is supposed to be assembled, you can always look at part diagram pictures on honda websites like www.hondapartswholesale.com/ for reference. I would recheck everything that was removed / replaced to verify if everything is assembled correctly.

Hell yeah I did 🤪. And they are working just fine. No rust or brake dust issues, and they perform exactly like you would expect an OEM rear disc brake setup to run. Eventually I will upgrade my rotors and pads to handle the increased stresses that come with autoX / track days. But even then, I haven't had any issues so far...
