Most impressive part of this video is her painting the engine room floor. An area that is out of sight , no one will ever see . But paint it she did because it's the right way to do things and they both take pride . It's nice to see people who wont settle for "ehh , good enough"

A long ways from when you guys first got the boat. I remember seeing the keel sway when you had trailered it after purchase. I thought these guys are in over their heads. It is such a beautiful boat now. I am carpenter from Canada and just thoroughly impressed with Dan's prowess. Few people can be a good builder, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fiberglass etc.. thanks for your content guys keep going.

Kika and Dan, I came across your channel...well, more like stumbled upon it while watching surf videos, which morphed into dive videos...to sailing and adventure videos...to Uma. I was immediately transfixed. Aside from the fantasy I have always had about "selling it all" and living off the grid, there is something so absolutely beautiful about YOUR partnership with each other. I binged a dozen Steps, joined the Uma Nation and have been vicariously living through your eyes. I am beyond the least handy person on the planet, but you make me want to build or fix something :). Love to connect one day. Until then, keep doing what you do.

We once stayed for one week in La Bahia Naval ship yard to put an Anti-Foul on the haul. It was a nice ship yard in Enseñada, Mexico, Baja California. They treated us so nice and they had a nice facility. We had a small 2001 26X McGregor Sailboat Fractional Sloop. Twin Rudders, Swing Keel, 50 HP Outboard at the time. We sold Fledge and miss her very much. A guy from Alaska came down and purchased her. I have enjoyed watching your adventures! Thank you for sharing your wonderful journey with us. Godspeed!

Next time you use 3M 5200 isopropyl alcohol, plain old rubbing alcohol from Walmart, will dissolve 5200 for clean up before it skins over. If you use plenty of paper towels and 70 % isopropyl alcohol you can clean up tools and hands and excess 5200 if you wipe before it skins over! Hope this tip helps!!!!!!!!!!!! I was genuinely frightened for you both. In watching the saga through to this this most recent video, I’m so impressed with how you’ve turned Uma from flotsam not worthy of a slip, into a very sound, cleverly laid out, well thought out, ocean going home! Well done. I’m an “old guy” and I’ll offer this advice, enjoy each other every moment of every day. You’ve given yourselves a rare gift. Fair winds... Rand

Definitely beside, as she's not just a sidekick, she's 50/50 as I see it.

what a waste of time all that effort and one careless mishap with a reef and the boat is on the bottom If it were an outboard, it would be an easy and cheap installation, and they kick up when they hit something. Pro tip for inserting those small foam earplugs. Using opposite hand of the ear you want to insert plug into roll the plug between thumb and finger to tighten it. Then using same hand as the ear you want to insert it in pull down on the ear lobe. Final step, reaching behind your head slide plug into the ear. Give it a moment and the plug will expand and stay in the ear.

I've refurbished a few transoms. Rough grind the inset with a round grinding ball, then fine grind (proper grit for bonding), clean with 99% alcohol, then wipe with acetone. If there's any visable residue, alternate wiping with alcohol and acetone until zero residue remains. Let dry, THEN glass it in. Stuff glass into the depression, tight, with excess sticking out, and use something like thick aluminum foil taped over it to hold it in. You don't want ANY air in there. The result should stick out from the hull slightly (about a quarter of an inch). After it cures, sand it flush, and clean in. Use glass beads and epoxy/resin to fill in any gaps, and sand smooth. Recheck and repair any gaps. Let it cure for at least three days before cleaning and painting. Wait a few more days for the paint to fully cure before applying anti-fouling. I've glassed in quite a few body panels, too. ;) Finally, use PL Marine by Loctite for those threads!!! It provides a flexible (this is key for marine seals), waterproof seal. Otherwise, you can get slow leaks around the threads. www.homedepot.com/p/Loctite-PL-Marine-10-fl-oz-Fast-Cure-Adhesive-Sealant-2016891/206156418

I don't remember all of the details, but AVE did a show on lock washers, starting with a presentation from NASA. If those earplugs are foam, roll them to a smaller diameter between finger and thumb, then insert into your ear. The foam will then slowly expand and conform to your ear.This is much easier than trying to push a wide earplug into your ear.

Ever since my cat Peanut was tiny, I trained her to "come" whenever I whistle for her. Like a dog So... She always comes home or runs to me when I whistle. So... just now .... watching this vid, ...I forgot... and she was nicely sleeping in her snuggle spot when your video ended... THEN ...oops your sign-off whistling tune came on. ...Sure enough... my kitty woke up and came to see what I wanted.... lol Now she blames you for waking her up.

I love watching your projects. They never seem to get boring. And you both explain everything so well. I think a career in teaching is in the future. Maybe a book or two also. Keep smiling and sail on.

Creativity and innovation always make people excited and full of expectations! This is what you have been doing! I even think that even if you were to design, build and outfit a cruising sailboat with strong personal style from scratch, it would not be an impossible task! Thank you for sharing!

As always wonderful and motivating video. All i can says is NOW OceanVolt FOR SURE owes you one (if not more) for the amazing demonstration of how easy it is to install their product. Props and thanks also to TOP SECRET! Question (although this might reveal my ignorance about fiberglass work), did you fill the holes left by the old skeg before glassing them, and if so, what did you fill them with? Thanks for everything.
@SailingUma

Drilled out and filled the holes with epoxy from the inside and added a few more layers of glass on the inside too.

Sailing Uma Had the same question pop up but I assured myself that Dan MacGyver would leave no holes unfilled in the bottom of their home, especially after we could see how hefty this bottom is. Nice work as always, clean, precise and topped with a neat layer of paint. If I had a boat you could work on it any day!
