In this video we have a look at a classic Canadian .22 utility rifle, the Cooey Model 60 / Ranger. Manufactured by the H.W. Cooey Machine & Arms company of Coburg Ontario many thousands of these rifles were sold and they continue to be used and enjoyed.

Hi folks, this video is an edited version of one I uploaded way back in November of 2009. The original video has been "unlisted" since 2019 when YT decided they did not like it for some reason or another, but now it's back in all it's 480p glory! Do me a favor and please leave a comment and rate the video, and as always thanks for watching.

Yes, they are simple and robust. About the only commonly "broken" part was the stock. There is a thin portion of the stock under the magazine tube that often gets cracked if the rifle is dropped or hit. Other than that quite "bulletproof".

I remember this as being the first of your videos that I ever watched. I’ve had many model 60s come and go over the years. Last year I got the itch to own one again and picked up a well used, but not abused example for $150. The model 60 is truly a classic Canadian repeating 22. Happy New Year.

Good to hear from you, and happy new year to you as well! The price of the old model 60 has certainly risen over the years, at one time a minty one might have brought $120 and an average one could be had for $50.

Interestingly Cooey firearms seem to be more appreciated now than they were thirty years ago. I think a lot of that has to do with the diminishing supply of them, and also with nostalgia.

Is your scope mount one of the stamped steel ones? They were made in two sizes, one for 3/4" scopes and one for 7/8" scopes. 3/4" are not too hard to find but 7/8" are rather uncommon. I suggest looking around at gun shows, one will usually turn up eventually.

@314299
@314299 2 жыл бұрын
There is an interesting story with this rifle and the trigger. The first time I saw this rifle it was in a local gun shop with no price on it. When I asked how much it was I was told it was broken and was for parts only. A previous owner attempted to do a "trigger job" on it and ended up making it unsafe - the rifle would sometimes go off as soon as the bolt was closed! So I got the rifle as "parts" for $50. I had a spare complete trigger mechanism and replaced the ruined one, refinished the wood and added the scope mount and scope and ended up with the rifle as you see it here.

I bought my Cooey brand new in 1975 (I was 20 at the time) ... and just refinished the stock with Tru-Oil, and cold-blued the barrel (Casey Birchwood). Hi... I have 2 Cooeys, both single shot... a Model 75, that I bought over 60 years ago for $7.00 from my uncle. My buddy passed away about 5 years ago and left me his Model 39. My eyesight is getting a little weak, and I wanted to add a couple of scopes. What kind of setup are you running? Thanks
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
The rifle in the video uses an old discontinued weaver N3 side mount scope bracket/ring set for a 7/8" scope. Side mounts require the rifle to have been either factory drilled and tapped on the side of the receiver or, drilled and tapped by a gunsmith. Later versions of the rifle had the top of the receiver factory grooved for "22 tip-off mounts". If your rifles have grooved top receivers to scope them is as easy - just buy proper rings and a scope and install. If they are drilled and tapped on the left side of the receiver you will need side mount scope base and rings, Weaver makes these, you can look them up on the Weaver website. If the rifle is not already drilled and tapped you will need a gunsmith or machinist to do that. Be warned that the cost of drilling and tapping and buying the special side mount and rings will cost more then the rifle is worth. If you want a Cooey to shoot with a scope it is cheaper and easier just to get another one that's already set up for optics. Hope that answers your question.
