CAMPING FOOD • Frito Pie
Originally created in Mexico but popularized in the American Southwest, Frito pies (not actual pies) are comfort food perfection. Picture this: a freshly opened bag of Fritos smothered in spicy beef chili, cheddar cheese, and some bright, crunchy onions and jalapeños. Best eaten directly out of the bag.
Ingredients FOR CHILI:
* 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
* 1 medium white onion, chopped and divided
* 3 cloves garlic, minced
* 2 tbsp. tomato paste
* 1 lb. ground beef
* 1 1/2 tbsp. chili powder
* 1 tsp. ground cumin
* 1 tsp. dried oregano
* 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
* Kosher salt
* Freshly ground black pepper
* 1 (28-oz.) can crushed tomatoes
* 1 (15-oz.) can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
* 1 (4-oz.) can green chili
FOR SERVING:
* 6 (1-oz) bags Fritos
* 1 jalapeño, thinly sliced
* 2 c. shredded Cheddar
* Sour cream, for serving (optional)
Directions:
Step 1In a large pot over medium heat, heat oil. Add half onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute more, then add tomato paste, stirring to combine. Add ground beef and cook until no longer pink. Drain fat and return to heat.
Step 2Add chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne, and season generously with salt and pepper. Pour in crushed tomatoes, pinto beans, and green chili and bring chili to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes. Season with more salt and pepper, if
Step 3Build Frito pie: open bag(s) and ladle in chili. Top with cheddar, remaining chopped white onions, jalapeños, and sour cream if using.

Frito pie was invented in Texas. The best way to prepare it is to put a small bag of Frito's in a bowl. cover it with half a can of Wolf Brand Chili (NO BEANS), and the cheese of your choice. Put it in the microwave for 3 minutes and enjoy! Love the video, you can't help it that you were born in CANADA! Can't wait for the next video.

I don't understand why from the recipe they just don't remove the bag and put the chips directly on a plate with the hot dressing. The hot chilli in contact with the inner plastic bag will just make the chemicals to leach out onto the food.

Object is to put the Fritos in a bowl . Never put the hot cook stuff inside the bag since it will make the bag get hot. Plus you should have bought shredded lettuce , tomatoes and sour cream and shredded cheese and one avocado

I had this back in 1970-74 at my High School Cafeteria!! They called them Chili Boats!! Would come in a rectangular paper bowl/boat!! Was my favorite lunch food!! My Mom would only let us buy lunch 3 times a week (4 kids)!! Not sure of Mexico thing and Fritos connection!

Highly recommend you try 1) Cool Ranch doritos with clam chowder on top (similar way to frito pie) 2) Harvest Cheddar SunChips with mac and cheese added to bag 3) Simple Quaker oatmeal with water and added crumbled banana bread on top 4) Thai peanut butter noodles/pasta with sweet potato chips

I don't like beans and jalapenos, but I think it would be better if the meat mix were on the plate as a dip. That way the chips wouldn't get soggy. I would like it with taco meat, tomatoes, onions, cheese, maybe some avocados. You could use Doritos, too.

This seems like more of a walking taco. Frito Lay makes special packaging for both Fritos and Doritos that’s designed to open longways and do exactly what you did. They call it a walking taco, anyway.

Another way to drain your fat from the pot is to push your meat to the side, crunch up a couple paper towels put on top of the fat. Pushing down with your wooden spoon so the grease will be absorbed, lift out into your trash bag. Walla.

Ken you could have added cream cheese to your grocery list. cut the jalapeño in two halves long ways gutted the seeds n vein over your camp stove skewed the two halves cooked to a bit of char put some cream cheese on the inside or cheddar buttered the outside rolled in plain bread crumbs made jalapeño poppers those you cut nose off and stem those that want it hot full bore just insert cubed cheddar cheese leave whole or slice in two like 🛶 partial char or put the cheese add the other half tooth pick eat as is char the rest of the way few ideas 💡 to making cheddar peppers. Cream cheese is last after cooking the pepper if you go that route

When I lived in New Mexico, I used to have Frito Pie as a treat. I do agree it's a perfect meal while in Moose
