It's hard to cook Korean food outside of Korea, unless you live somewhere with an Asian market or a great Koreatown. For the rest of us, it's a challenge. It's not prefect, but Soo Zee's mom taught us how to make some basic Korean stuff even when you can't find any of the main ingredients you'd normally need for Korean cooking. In this video we make a whole Korean meal from scratch: bone broth oxtail soup (꼬리곰탕), white rice, and summer kimchi (물김치).
If you like this kind of video let us know! It's a little different from Do Stuff's normal style, but we figured someone out there might be having the same problem we were and would like to know the solution.
Read more stuff! Sign up and we'll send you stuff. It's free! Click here: bit.ly/1SNVh1O

This was actually one of the first dishes I made when I started really getting into Korean cooking. It took 3 days, but it was sticky and warm and this slight beefy flavor. It was so worth it. SooZee you did amazing with the voice over elements in the video!

Of course, SooZee has her mom, but for the rest of us, I recommend Maangchi's channel. The paste, for example, thickens the spicy pepper paste so it sticks to the napa cabbage.

In Hawaii, we eat rice with pretty much everything too. And I grew up making rice by using my finger to measure the water level whether I had a ricepot or not. On another note, how'd the kimchi turn out?

My mom and her friends had the same challenge living in London in the seventies. When she was pregnant with me, she craved sushi so much she had to mcguyver it with vinegar, sugar and basmati. Her Malaysian friend concocted a really nice laksa with spaghetti, tinned mackerel, vinegar and lettuce.

My dad taught me how to measure how much water to put in rice by filling it up to the first knuckle on the longest finger. So I'll dip my hand in, have my fingertip touch the rice, and if the water meets the first bend of my middle finger then it's good.

you can do rice in the microwave too. 1 part rice to 2 parts water. Put it in a microwave safe bowl. Season it however you want. Cover it, with saran wrap or a lid if the dish has one. Cook on high for 5 minutes, then cook on half power for about 15 minutes. It isn't any quicker than making rice on the stove, but it frees up a burner and if you have burners that don't want to ever be low, it works.

I'm from a Latin country without almost no Asian immigrants, but I'm part Chinese, dear lord is a pain the butt to make a proper Asian meal :,v I can't wait to move or to at least get an Asian market running on the country... Also I'm from the capital city and its this hard, how people in the rural do it, idk. Bless them 😭

This is my new fav episode. Good job =) to measure rice I do something similar. Poke your finger down so your finger tip touches it then each knuckle in the water is how many cups of rice your cooking. So 1 cup is 1 knuckle and 2 cups is 2 knuckles. Measurements may vary with hand size =P

You can always use either pudding rice, paella rice or Turkish pilaf rice - that’s what all Koreans and Japanese I know who live outside Asia do, even some who live in bigger cities in Europe. It’s the same kind of short grain rice, just a slightly different quality from the Korean/Japanese short grain.

now what if your pot for rice is very wide? like, bigger in diameter than your palm? Also, you should have made a continuation, you eating the stuff you made! I'm mostly curious about the salad thingy. How was it? By the look of it I could only imagine a salty watery wanna be salad? I'm just curious, but not curious enough to make it myself, so pleeeeeease tell us.

Maddie calling that's not actually how kimchi in Korea is like. U need a kind of chili paste mix and stuff and rub it onto the cabbage. But I guess in America if that if all u have then it should be fine

I've always wondered that too. They are so cute together so I kinda hope they are. I think there is still a lot of stigma in South Korea about being gay, so even if they are, I don't know that they would talk about it openly. Either way, it's great that they go on so many awesome adventures together.
