Hey Kenny... I remember as a kid my Dad and I would go Squirrel hunting. We would skin, and clean the Squirrels then go to my Grandma's house. She would fry the Squirrel then throw them in the oven. She would make milk gravy from the drippin's. fried eggs and homemade biscuits. Even though I grew up in Illinois my family was from the Ozarks Mountains of Missouri. True Hillbilly cooking still runs deep in my family. Thank you for a great video really took me back to a time when my Dad and Grandma was still here with us.

I've never eaten squirrel until today. A neighbor gave me 3 and I came across this video. I picked up some Old Bay seasoning and followed the recipe. I didn't have a thermometer, but I guesstimated (I fry chicken a lot), went with the long simmer, and everything has come out tender and tasty. I didn't have any thoughts beforehand that I may not like squirrel, and having eaten it, i'm actually very pleased with trying this meat. I'm glad that I came across this video. Thanks Ken.

@j.christopherlindsey8933
@j.christopherlindsey8933 6 жыл бұрын
They usually don't grill too well. Life or death, go for it, but trying to make an at home meal? They need to be parboiled or in the case of the video, flash fried before actually cookin. I may be mistaken, but the flash frying causes a crust which locks in the natural moisture of the meat. I personally don't like parboiling, but grilling will most likely make the meat tough.
@SouloDoloMusic

promod114 is right. As long as you parboil them first, it's just fine. Great with bbq sauce.

Shouldn't need to ask this in a free society, wish I didn't need to, but is it legal to hunt on your own property with a pellet gun? (most of America doesn't allow firearm discharges in suburban areas of course) but with a pellet gun would it be legal?

My dad and I used to hunt them all the time and Mama would fry them up. I cook for myself and have for some time, but you taught me something new. I never knew that corn starch would make such a great batter and I love old bay seasoning but had only used it for crabs and shrimp. I have all of Mama's old iron skillets and I am gonna break them out and try your recipie...which I think would be great for chicken also! Thanks a lot. I love your style! Man do I love me some squirrel. I'm going to try this way of cooking 'em. I usually take the back straps and make a gravy like you would with sausage gravy and fry the hind legs and front quarters like you did. Wild/brown rice with the hind and front leg meat taken off the bone over the rice with the gravy over it. Man, oh man. Lol. Squirrel is some of the best game you can eat. Thanks for sharing this great tradition that we as country boys love so much. Thank you for your service. I'm a subscriber for life. Great stuff Kenny, Great stuff.

After your excellent squirrel cooking tips, I just put squirrel back on my game list for this coming FALL in Maine. My granddaddy (a master chef by trade) always did our Thanksgiving squirrel game/hunt but sautéed/ (for hours) them in wine/sherry and fruit (cherries). I like your technique better. Thanks and God bless you too!! / Cliff
