August and September Cool Flowers, Hardy Annual Seed Sowing in Scotland, Zone 8b
Did you know you can sow some seeds now in late summer / early autumn to give you stronger plants with earlier flowers next year. It is amazing the quality of plants you get from doing this! My video this week shares what works for me in Scotland, which varieties of seeds I sow and when I do this in August and September.

Here I am a year later, as I start thinking about autumn sowing. I am on the south coast and I reckon you are about 3-4 weeks ahead of me in terms of sowing and planting times. This is very useful because if I see you starting something I know I have a couple of weeks before I must begin! Let’s hope we don’t have extreme temps this winter.

Oh I know extremes of temperature like last year would not be good. But I do feel I learned a lot from it and now have an action plan at different temperature extremes to keep my seedlings alive! I love this time of year sowing seeds again as they pop up so quickly in the warmth compared to getting them started in late winter!

Hi Catherine can you tell me how to collect seeds from my anemones? Or others? And what if it’s just foliage? Mine are all out side in pots; and can I just say; you are born to make these videos!
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm

Thanks Jill, really pleased you are enjoying the videos! Anemones I have always dug up and saved the corms after flowering to replant so I haven’t collected the seed from these. Once the anemones have lost their petals there will be a seed pod left behind which you cut and can dry inside to collect the seeds from. Seeds can only be collected from plants that have flowered as you get the seeds from the finished flower stem which then sets seed, so if it’s just foliage you have you wouldn’t be able to collect seed x

Thanks so much for this video! One thing ive noticed is i find it incredibly hard to find any information about our first frost dates in the UK, Im new to gardening so dont have years of experience to work from. One website i found said in Norfolk UK (where i live) first frost date mid Dec! I cant believe that for a second. Would you suggest my frost date would be similar or a couple of weeks later than yours in Scotland? Really would appreciate some of your amazing insight! Thank you again for your wonderful and informative videos! x

Hello Patience, I am so sorry I didn’t respond to your comment sooner. For some reason it had gone in a spam folder I hadn’t seen. There are lots of websites with suggested first frosts dates but they are an average and I have found that every year is really different. Every year I note down when the first frost has been and it really has varied between the end of September and mid November with October being the most likely. In Norfolk you definitely would be a couple of weeks later than me for your first frosts but again they could differ Year on year. I think it’s most likely yours would be between mid November to mid December. At this time of year I watch the weather forecast a lot for overnight temperatures and any time it looks just a couple of degrees I fleece the dahlias to see if I can get them lasting a bit longer!

Thankyou Catherine. I'm in County Durham so will check first frost date. My greenhouse isn't heated, will they still be ok out there?

I have an unheated greenhouse too. Hardy annuals can cope with the cold so should be fine in the greenhouse. Last year if the weather was well below freezing I just popped a layer of fleece over the top for those chilly nights but took it off in the daytime.

Thanks for watching Jane, I am so glad you enjoyed it. I hope you get on well with growing your cut flowers next year. At this time of year I sow all the seeds I talked about in the video inside just for a bit of extra warmth for getting them to germinate.

Are these seedlings placed on heating pad til germination then placed under grow lights until they get there first set of true leaves then transplanted outdoor in the winter time?
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Gayle, At the moment as there is still some warmth in the greenhouse I am getting the seeds to germinate without putting them on a heat pad. Any I sow getting into October or when I start again in late Jan/Feb will need to go on a heated propagator for some bottom heat. I also haven't been using grow lights for my seeds sown in August/September as light levels are still good but I would use them in October/January/February. I now overwinter my seedlings in an unheated greenhouse as I have lost too many in the garden beds over previous winters through freezing temperatures, snow or wet conditions. I can plant out hardy annuals I have overwintered from March onwards next year. Thanks for watching!
