How a 19 cent book bin purchase led to a classic film. Take a closer look at the conception and creation of Cool Hand Luke.
About Cool Hand Luke (1967):
Academy Award winner Paul Newman stars with George Kennedy in this story of a man who will not surrender to authority--even at the cost of his life. When Luke Jackson (Newman) is sentenced to a Southern prison for a minor infraction, his intelligence, calm under pressure and inability to accept defeat soon gain him the respect of his fellow inmates on the chain gang--and the nickname Cool Hand Luke. But they also earn Luke the enmity of the warden, who cannot allow any inmate to challenge his authority. When Luke's mother dies, he decides to escape ... and he will not allow anyone to stop him.

I was standing in the terminal boarding area of LAX the day after Thanksgiving in 1967, waiting for a flight to Sacramento after getting back from overseas. Looking over at the nearby gate, there was Joy Harmon behind the boarding dais looking at me. She smiled and I smiled back. I boarded my plane and thought what a pretty woman she really is. I remember her very well from only a moments glance.

To this day, I am now unbelievably 55 years aged, this film was one that I took in lying on the flea infested carpet of my childhood home and could not take my eyes from it on a Sunday matinee viewing on a Zenith color picture television. Remember the tele circuits and glass transistors would get hot and make popping noises. The movie was just character driven with every scene telling a bit more.......not entirely but just enough to say .......yes I'm in.

And I disagree with one of the interviewees saying Newman was not believable enough in 'Hud,' and people still sympathize with him in that role. I'll answer my own question about why so many people find this movie so compelling. It's compelling because the character of Luke, within the prison system, is a metaphor for the individual and his conflict with the stifling and oppressive forces that act upon him from society.
